Wow, I was surprised at how expensive their highlights have become. It was 65.00 plus 15.00 for each additional bowl, also a toning fees. I pay that when I go to a real salon. I am a proponent of education and supporting students, but it was a bad experience all around. Sub-optimal highlights, and expensive. Not a recipe for a repeat visit. read more

I have been getting my hair cut and highlighted here regularly for a few years now and have always had a very good experience. Everything in life costs time or money and here- you pay in time. The students are new and slower than a traditional salon, but I wouldn't expect anything different. They're nervous and these are new skills for them. Every single student I have had was kind, caring, and striving to please. They regularly check in with an instructor if they are unsure of a next step and the instructors have always been polite, knowledgeable, and promptly available. Often the instructor will "fine tune" my cut at the end to fix anything they see and my cut always looks like I went to a high end salon. The prices are fair, the salon is clean and well kept. I will return time and time again. My only wish is for an online apt booking option! (Pics are all after pics over the years....) read more

I had heard of beauty schools before and that they offer discounted services, and finally decided to try it to save some money. I called early in the week to make appointments for myself and my daughter. The girl on the phone was super helpful and accommodating and answered all my first-timer questions. Our appointment times were 4:45 - on a Friday. We were greeted, sat, and then our respective stylists come to get us. I wanted to see if I could get my husband a buzzcut while we were there, but the front girl said they were busy and had no openings. When I sat down in my chair, my stylist asked if my husband was getting a cut too (we met there, he dropped of my daughter) and I said no, that the front desk said there were no openings. She asked what he needed done, I said just a quick buzzcut and she said if she had time, she would do it, or she would find someone to do it. (She didn't have to do this, but we really appreciated her willingness to help.) Because these are students, the haircuts take longer than if you went to a "normal" salon. However, they are thorough. And, they check with their teachers to make sure they are doing this right, and how should they do that, etc. - which I appreciated. (Just saying allow for extra time.) I really liked my stylist, chatty and thorough and did exactly what I wanted. My daughter loved her stylist. And, my daughter has long, thick hair and her stylist took about 2.5 hours to wash, cut, dry and style her hair (a lot of curling). And she did a great job. The kicker? $8 - each. For a wash, cut, dry, and style. EIGHT BUCKS! * * NOTE: They do not have the ability to add tips when you pay ... so you need to bring a few bucks with you (they also have an ATM machine there). I also had a lip wax done - $7. Oh, and when my stylist was done with my hair, she went to ask the front desk if she could do my husband's hair, and she was able to (another $8). $31 for (3) wash, cut, dry, styles and a wax is pretty dang good if you ask me. And we were all happy with the services and the personableness of our stylists. And, they weren't done with us until it was time for them to clean up and close. But, we never felt rushed or anything like that. We will definitely be back! read more

If I could give this school zero stars, I absolutely would. I just graduated from the esthetician program just this past month and it was genuinely the worst 6 months I've ever experienced. If you want a school that doesn't value your education, staff blatantly talk crap about other students, breaks promises that they made at the beginning of your program, and doesn't get you prepared for boards whatsoever, then Paul Mitchell is the school for you! My class had 13 girls in it and every single one of us had an awful experience. It was made very clear while attending that school that no one there (except for the few gems) values your education or cares that you're paying $13k to get the education you deserve. One of our teachers up and left about half way through our program and our other teacher unfortunately wasn't able to work full time, which is not her fault. Its up to the school to make sure that we have a full time teacher, but of course they failed to do that. There were multiple times where my class was forced to sit in the hallway for the entire day because no one cared to try to get us into a classroom. The front desk people were CONSTANTLY screwing up our appointments and then blaming it on us, we only had ONE DAY A WEEK where we had a teacher teaching us for the entire day. They also said MULTIPLE times that esthis at Paul Mitchell have never failed the boards, but that wasn't the case for our class, on top of that, we got told we would have a job coach that would help us out with finding a job at the end of our program. Well guess what? Said job coach got fired and they never got a new one. So every single one of us is struggling to find a job when we were told we would have assistance. This school completely failed me and all of my peers and it's completely unacceptable. If you are looking to be a student here, please do not waste your time or your money. read more

The teachers are amazing and work really hard to give you the best education they can but the place is kind of a dump. It was always so cold because the heater was broken and every time it rained the roof was leaking and it was kind of dirty, they need to hire a cleaning crew to do a real deep clean on the place. read more

I've been to all the stylist schools in the Treasure Valley and this is the best, in my experience. Students have to learn on someone, so why not get both a discount treatment and help someone with their education? Students tend to have fresh, new ideas, are excited about helping customers and want to get things right. I think schools are the best choice when if you're willing to take a little bit of a risk. The prices here are reasonable and in line with everywhere else--about $10 for a cut, $30 for highlights, and a range of conditioning treatments, texture treatments, and the like between. I think they also offer senior discounts, although that might be wrong. They also offer manicures and pedicures, facials, waxing, and lash and eyebrow tinting. I've only used their hair services but I've had a good experience this time. I notice that the instructors really make sure that your hair turns out well. Rather than doing a perfunctory check, they actually look at your hair and will talk to the student to guide them on how to make it perfect. Several times I've had an instructor show a student how to do something which meant that they were really looking at getting my hair right. I appreciate that. I also love that students don't give you the hard sell. They never push products and when they do offer them, it's at a discount. That's nice. The work-space is clean, unlike some of the schools in the area. It's well-managed and appointments run on time. I'd give four and a half stars if I could, with the only drawback being that it can be hard to get an appointment. I usually have to schedule at least a week out and weekend appointments are almost impossible to get. It's hard to fault them for being successful. It also tends to take a little longer than it would at an actual salon to get your procedure done, but I'd rather they take their time than rush through things. The receptionists are always very friendly and energetic, the students are kind and open, and overall this is a great salon. Check Groupon for deals because you can often find something that brings down the already low price. It's worth a try. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. As an attendee of this school this is probably one of the worst educational organizations I've seen. The teachers are great but admin needs some help. I'm surprised that corporate hasn't sent people over to pick up the pieces. Even the facility needs help, from leaky roofs to overall rundown everything. Makes me wonder where their budget is going if not to the education of the students on the improvement of their educational experience. Had a facial, bare minimum, no client intake form, no skin analysis under a mag lamp, no extraction, too quick with hot towels, didn't touch nose, girl friends steamer didn't work, no blanket-cold, no arm massage. Spa pedicure is a joke. Uncomfortable chairs, kitchen sink for feet, no cuticle trimming, no leg massage, dry nail polish, friends was runny. No nail dryers. Polish job looks bad. I feel sorry for trainers, working with sub pare equipment. It is very obvious that the business does not put in any money into upgrades or products for them to use. To begin with I got a great deal for a 6 month VIP pkg on Groupon which included 6 months of unlimited cuts and one chemical treatment. Cheyanne did my first cut and a color. I loved the end result, the color was fun and she was able to cover my gray and only used one bowl to do it all. I was very satisfied. I have long hair and don't get it cut very often, I thought I'd get a trim and re-color every two months with my six month VIP pkg. So approx two months later I make an appointment to do so but like I usually do I procrastinated and wasn't able to get an appt with Cheyanne. But I wanted to look nice for an upcoming event I was attending and I took the only available appt that worked with my schedule which was on a Friday @ 4:00. The result of this appt was not satisfactory at all. So disappointed and here's why: First, I was seated in the RED chairs. I wasn't informed at the time I made my appt but services in these chairs vs. the black are more costly supposedly these stylists have more experience and are worth it. Sadly, this was not my experience. Challis was my stylist this time around and she cut my hair much shorter than I requested. I asked for it to be at the top of my shoulders (I mean't when it was dry) and it ended up being at least 2.5 inches above. It'll grow but now I won't be getting a third trim before my VIP membership expires since there's no way it'll grow out to my desired length in two months. :( Also, I said I only wanted her to use one bowl of color as it was enough the first time around and I wanted the same color used as last time. Nope, the color was much darker than before and I don't believe it was the same color used at my first appointment at all. She also indicated it wasn't enough to cover all my hair which was puzzling since it was the first time and this time I had even less hair to cover after my haircut. It had been a long week, probably for both of us. The lighting in the salon is terrible, I was exhausted and didn't have my glasses and couldn't really see the end result all that well. It wasn't until I got home that I realized how disappointing the end result was. My advice is NOT to make an appt on a Friday night as your stylist is going to be just as tired as you are which can create communication issues and result in a disappointing experience. I thought she "got it" and understood what I wanted. Wrong. Also Paul Mitchell should let customer's know when being seated at the more expensive RED chairs that services are going to be more. This should be done when the appt is being made. I had no idea when I was seated there the cost for my color was going to be more. I was actually under the mistaken impression it was going to be $8 (normally $10 but you get % off with VIP pkg) but that was the cost quoted for "additional bowls of color if needed" from my first visit. So color is either $25 or $35 depending on the black or red chair you are seated in. And yes, there this on their website: "We want you to look and feel your best. So if you're ever unsatisfied with the service you receive, just schedule an appointment within seven days of the original service and we'll be happy to correct it." but I didn't see this until today, I would have voiced my dissatisfaction had I known this sooner. I'm not sure what they could have done about hair cut too short though. read more

This school is a joke. The teachers are weird, passive mean girls who bully the students. They drop people when they have a few days left. The owners and managers are just there for profits. It's not a real school, it's a for-profit business and they look to profit over education. There is some support by some employees, but when things go wrong, they say the "owners" are making decisions behind the scenes. The teachers are disorganized, punitive, and possibly racist. There have been multiple lawsuits and legal issues. If you can go to another school, do. They will take your financial aid and then kick you out. The teachers are not positive professionals -- they are failures who want to lord over others and get people into trouble but they themselves miss hours of education that they are responsible for. read more

I've been going to Paul Mitchell for a few years now. I just get a simple trim. I get my hair washed, cut, dried and styled for under $10! However, the last couple times I've been there, my time has unnecessarily wasted here. It took TWO HOURS to TRIM my hair. TWO HOURS! The first time this happened I was giving them the benefit of the doubt. But I went in again and they clearly don't care for your time. I know they're students and they're practicing. However, I also know they have to reach certain hours for the program. I felt like I was being treated like a mannequin doll head to practice on for hours. The time it took was draining. Unfortunately, I won't be returning due to how unconcerned they are with the clients time. If you care to read on, I explain how unnecessarily thorough they were with my hair - and in turn - unconcerned with my time: 1. My hair was washed 4 times. Rinsed, lathered, rinse, lathered, rinse, lathered, rinse , lathered, rinse. Took at least 20 minutes. That's how long my showers take IF IM SHAVING! Ridiculous. 2. My hair was sectioned into 4 sections for the cut. But each section was sectioned further when actually cutting. 3. Hair sectioned similarly to blow dry. Drenched my SCALP- not my hair, with product before blow drying in small sections again. At this point it had been two hours and then he asked how I wanted my hair styled. My hair is naturally VERY straight. So I told him straight is fine ( implying that how it was after the blow dry was perfect) 4. Straightened my already straight hair with a technique similar to back combing??? If you have nothing to do and you love sitting in an uncomfortable chair for hours at a time, for nothing special, go on in! read more

I probably went to a dozen hair salons since moving to Boise. I finally stopped at Paul Mitchell on a whim. Figured it couldn't hurt and I was tired of paying the expensive prices at the 'elite' salons. I was ecstatic! Felt and looked like a new person. I had so many sincere compliments on my color and cut. This is a school, so yes you probably will get someone different every time. The students are very eager to make sure they are giving their best. Plenty of instructors on the floor to help. The VIP pass is a no brainer. I highly recommend Paul Mitchell to everyone I know. Don't be fooled by the Paul Mitchell name. Yes these are students...but they are not being trained and supervised properly. I went in for a color touch up thinking that would be easy. I even picked the golden blonde color out of the color book to match my hair. A supervisor chatted with me to confirm what I wanted but never came back or checked on what the student was mixing. Student applied color to my roots then ran out and mixed more color. I ended up with black and red roots and orange hair. Needless to say I was extremely upset!!! This was their supposedly advanced "level 2" student that costs more. The supervisor was totally uncaring and callous and told me a student could "try" to fix it, but no supervisor or manager would get involved since it has to be student work. I asked "if (student) isn't capable of a simple root touch up, how could she possibly do an advanced color correction?" No reply from supervisor, she just looked at me like this happens all the time and I was boring her with my issue. She insisted that I pay for the service despite what the student had done to me so I paid Paul Mitchell. I ended up going to a professional for color correction and it cost $500!!! My hair is now fried but a decent color. I hate this school and wouldn't trust them to wash my hair let alone do anything else. read more

This young lady fixed the absolute disaster that I walked in with, and she was easy to talk to. Ok. A lot of pros and cons to Paul Mitchell. For the most part, I only get hair service so that is what I will be discussing in the review since I don't know much about their other services. First, the pros: I've been coming here for ten years. Even when I lived in Washington, I would wait to get my hair done until I visited Boise so that I could go to Paul Mitchell. I love the prices, I prefer to get my hair dyed with the same brand/product each time, and for the most part, I leave extremely satisfied. I like how you get to try out their products and see the shampoo/conditioner in action since they use their products to wash/style your hair. Their products are pretty decently priced, last quite a while, and have options for many hair types- so I would recommend buying what you like while it's on sale or a bundled deal for best value. Secondly, the cons: If you haven't been before, you have to remember that it is A SCHOOL. These are *students* cutting your hair, not professionals, and they could possibly make a mistake. That's the risk you take coming here. With that being said, they usually do a great job. You can request a phase 2 student if you'd prefer, which means they've been a student longer and have more experience or 'hours'. I will admit I have had a few times that I left pretty unhappy with either how long the process took, or how my end result turned out. I have learned to be very direct with what I would like the student to do with my hair and explain to them my hair type along with things I do/don't prefer (Like blow-drying my hair on low, or not cutting my hair 'blunt' at the tips). They are not mind readers and they are still learning, so being understanding of that will be helpful to both yourself and the student. If you don't trust them to cut your hair, you can always just get a hair color or hair mask and go get the cut elsewhere. It would still be worth your time. I had one time that I was extremely dissatisfied with my hair cut, and I didn't want to hurt the student's feelings so I waited until I left and called back. They were incredibly understanding, refunded me, and had me come in to get my hair fixed which, although was an overall bummer experience, it is just what happens sometimes. They were so accommodating that I would still recommend them. Especially since I've been going for so long and only had one time that I needed to complain, I would say those are great statistics. Well, a Really Good Friend of Mine got me a Pedicure here for my Christmas Present, and she got a Nail Treatment. My Student was KARA, and her's was AJ...We were Both Very Pleased with the Results. However, My Pedicure could have come out "Looking" more even, but I took care of that with a Heavy Grit Nail File. Perhaps I'm just being a bit OCD, but felt that BOTH Big Toes Nails should have come out looking the same, Correct?? Now Other than That, I was Very Pleased. I hope they can do the Same with a Beard Trim (I have a Duck Dynasty Type of Beard, & I'm really Picky), and Hopefully a Beard Color Treatment, We shall see...But I WILL give them Referrals. went there to get my hair done and $110 and 8 hours later i left with hair color and cut i didn't want. i don't look like the reference picture and the girl had no clue what she was doing, yes, it's a school but when it comes to someone's hair and coloring i feel as if someone that knows what they're doing should be doing it, she used so much bleach on my hair and it was supposed to be the ends, big from the mid shaft/ middle of my hair down. the color didn't even cover the bleaching they did. i have brown roots, a line of yellow n then it "fades" into the purple I DIDNT WANT. i look like a clown read more

I called first thing this morning to see if there were any openings for two people spa pedicure's and got the voice mail. I left my name and number and no one called me back. I called back in the afternoon and spoke to Ashley and was advised that they have no openings for pedicures until late next week. NThis School is mostly focus on raising money. Also staff come and go. Each month or even week a new teacher and someone leaves or gets simply terminated. Also very conservative for a school of beauty industry and they really need to or staff more teachers on the floor or takes less students at a time. Way too many students in theory and had to take one on one when needed. Would have to wait like 15 min for a teacher to be available to help me each time I needed a final check on a client or even a simple question that wouldn't allow me to move forward. read more

I used to go here for everything I needed hair and eyebrow wise a few years ago, so we were in town and I decided to go again. MISTAKE!!!!!! Save your money and go somewhere else! Lina was the name of the girl doing my cut and highlights, and she butchered it. The red flag went up when she mixed the colors without asking my what I wanted or looking at the picture I brought. The highlights were WAY too trashy brassy blonde and the instructor had her fix it with a toner. I about cried when I saw my cut bc I have spent years growing my hair out and told her not to take more than an inch off and low and behold roughly 4 inches were taken off along with horrible layers that the instructor had to re do most of. I was PISSED! Also, if you do have long hair they will charge you extra for both cut and colors. I will never go back! All of this and I had asked for one of their honor students. What a waste of 60$ and years of growing my hair out. read more
