I learned it is illegal to negotiate a stipulation without the client taking part. After Penner I was unrepresented a few months before I had a new attorney. Penner's stipulation moved non trust assets into the trust which gave a bias trustee power over them. Because both parties and judge signed the stipulation it became set in stone - could not be modified. The one year statute of limitations on malpractice protects bad attorneys. A WARNING to others DO NOT SIGN anything your attorney asks you to sign - especially if they press you, scare you or hurry you. You have a lot of time to have one or two attorneys read it - there is no rush. So the lesson is to hire a second attorney to watch the first attorney to make sure they don't sabotage your case.
