I am staying in an AirB&B on the Carreteria street for a few days with my best friend. After a day of lounging in the sun, we didn't feel like heading out for dinner anymore. At 20:30 I headed out, after having heard good things about Ciao Carreteria from friends that live in Malaga. I asked (in very rusty Spanish) whether it would be possible to get two pizzas as a take away. The lovely fellow near the bar said of course, let me sit down and offered me a free beverage. My waiting time (for a pizza prosciutto and a pizza quattro formaggi) was very short - 10 minutes tops. It was super reasonably priced, and upon leaving, one of the waitresses brought me a plastic bag with a free bottle of red wine in it. All in all, a lovely experience. The dough is genuinely what you expect an authentic Italian pizza to taste like, all the ingredients are fresh and the staff is delightful. During my next visit to Malaga, these guys 100% get my custom!

Why someone who book an Italian restaurant in a Spanish town is beyond me :-) the place was nice and the service was great but the food was ok. We had platters of food arrive and so I cannot comment on the menu. We had quite a few dishes but every single dish had cheese in it. I could not eat another course with cheese in it. We started off with a Burratta which is a super fresh cheese and that was really nice. Then came the cheese wrapped in pancetta, buffalo mozzarella with Parma ham, two pasta course with cheese sauce and then tiramisu. The pasta dishes were very nice but I have never had spaghetti vongole with a cheese and pesto sauce and it was ordinary :-) Service was good and the value for money was a bit low here for me. Malaga has some amazing restaurants and they are also very reasonable but this one wasn't. I may come back here again if I run out of options in town :-)

After that came a "Hawaiian pizza". Thin crusted and underwhelming, no flavor, needed salt and more time in the oven. Total failure. Then, the "mystery meat" Marsala. I can't call it pork, or chicken, certainly not veal. Whatever it was could not be cut with a knife or masticated in any way . The sauce was ridiculously sweet and frankly inedible. Yes, Marsala is a sweet wine, but certainly when prepared properly, spitting isn't the reaction. I literally could not cut into the meat as it was like shoe leather. Of course, the waitress announced there was nothing they could do other than put that mess into a box so I could throw it in the garbage on the way home. Talk about a horrible business model. Service is slightly slow because of the amount of people that they serve at any given time. So yes understandably, you will probably have to flag your waiter/waitress if you want anything after your initial order is taken because it can seem a little chaotic. The place is total old school Andalusia. How about the food? The food is just as authentic as the look of this place, which is always packed. I had the typical tomato salad with fish which is always delicious because the basic ingredients are always so fresh. Tomatoes stand out here because they are soo good. I enjoyed patatas bravas, salpicon, gildas, jamon, olives and croquetas de toro. What better to wash it all down with than a cup of Jerez amontillado and a glass of tinto de verano. Those that have left mediocre reveiws probably don't know what to expect or have no idea what to order, which, will probably end in an unfavorable experience.
