Apparently I had at some point murmured something about quite fancying trying it out (she says). So it was initially with much trepidation and brave-face-putting that we first turned up there. And yes, I was won over. Completely. We did the Beginners Course, we returned for the Mid Level Course, and we're planning on doing the Advanced. And it's all been a blast. There are, inevitably, those moments at the beginning of each new course where the girlfriend glowers while you pretend that you do indeed remember perfectly the steps you learned in the last course, and that you're not trying surreptitiously to watch what the others are doing but are in fact just tying your shoelaces. (it doesn't help, by the way, because nearly all the men in the place are doing exactly the same as you, and nearly all the women are doing what your girlfriend is doing). But enough of that. Let me tell you more about the place itself. It is, I think, a quite well-established dance school, and has quite a good reputation. The decor has been done with great taste and subtlety - chic, very smart and yet utterly unpretentious. The teachers are all brilliant (with, I must say, one exception: also coincidentally by far the least camp one. Strange...); but the rest are highly professional, relaxed and very friendly. Through the summer they seem not to have fixed courses (I could be wrong on this) and we went instead (yes, it was my girlfriend's idea) to open Salsa classes: Great! You feel completely sexy! Who cares what you look like! They also hire the place out for weddings and suchlike, and they have Balls and Dances pretty much every week. We attended one and it was a great night out - all very chic and everyone dressed to the hilt, and performances by some of the teachers that looked absolutely wonderful. And really not very expensive. Also what you notice is that it is, I'm told, quite unnusual among most of the dance studios in Berlin in terms of its relaxed informality, and there's a preponderance of homosexual couples. Which I find makes for a very relaxed vibe. Also when the "men" and "women" split into two lines, they say instead the "leaders" and the "followers". And yes, a couple of times we got confused and ended with my girlfriend leading me around the floor. Until we realised. Ah well. Hardly anyone laughed. All in all, I thoroughly recommend it, whether you're a more serious dancer or just want to do a couple of casual classes, or you fancy simply turning up to one of the balls: Go!

They were extremely easy to work with. We waited til the last minute to print, but they hammered them out as quick as possible and delivered them to us exactly on time! We even used thin wood (which was a bit of an experiment) and it worked perfectly! I have also posted some pics to demonstrate. I will definitley be using them again... next on the list.... thank you cards. Thank you so much for your amazing work, Volta!!!!

We visited their beautiful studio with a vague notion of what we wanted to do - more of a concept than anything else - and within 20 minutes Laureen had sketched a beautiful layout. Not only had she made our invitation real - we walked out of Volta with a sense that our wedding was finally becoming real as well. We didn't stop smiling for the rest of the day. That studio sketch did not do justice to the design that was to follow. I'm adding a picture here so you can see it but she took our idea and brought that simple line sketch to life. We went through a couple of iterations to get the imagery just right and our feedback was immediately heard and incorporated. But as beautiful as the invites looked on the screen, we were not prepared for the delight of the beautifully wrapped packets containing the final print. They were well packed and delivered exactly on time. They went out last week and people have been BLOWING UP our phones and emails telling us that these are some of the most beautiful and unique invitations they've ever seen. We could not possibly be happier. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Volta Press.

The name says it ALL...coolest liquor store ever and they even have their own brand of beer!!read more

Drink Drunk is quite literally the greatest liquor store on the planet…read more It's on the corner of Skalitzer Str. and Schlesische Str., which is super busy 'cause it's walking distance from like seventeen clubs. A liquor store in this location could sell warm beer out of a cardboard box and probably make a decent amount of money. That's why Drink Drunk is so amazing, because the fine people at Drink Drunk go so far above and beyond being a basic liquor store when, with their location, they really don't have to. I've never really felt an attachment to a liquor store before this one, and I doubt I will again in the future. Drink Drunk is wholly unique, a singular ray of light in an otherwise dark world filled with mediocre liquor stores. First of all, the beer selection is just stupid. They have the normal German/Belgian/Czech stuff that most stores here have, and then an entire other wall filled with craft and weird beers from all over the world. It's ridiculous. I moved to Berlin from halfway across the world and like three different breweries from my hometown are represented here, each with several different varieties of beer. Some of the stuff is a little expensive for Berlin but it probably has to take like three airplanes to get here so what're ya gonna do. The best part of Drink Drunk though, hands down, is the music. I live near the place and have to pass it to go most anywhere and on my dang honor I solemnly swear I've never heard them play a bad tune. It's generally classic 90s/2000s rap and RnB, dancehall, reggae, things of that nature, which is pretty rare for Berlin, and they have a really bangin' soundsystem for a späti. I've heard them playing Mariah Carey deep cuts. DJ Quik remixes. The album version of "Guilty Conscience." It's bananas. In the summertime they turn it up and you can spend a whole night on the sidewalk out front, listening to jams and drinking, and it'll cost you less than cover at most clubs. Long live Drink Drunk.
