This is by far the best place to learn Taekwondo in Eastern North Carolina. They have been around…read morefor 25 years now, with good reason. My son and I started taking classes here when the ATA school in Greenville closed. This school was a lot different than ATA, but we couldn't be happier. You will EARN your belt here. At our first school, you went for 30 days, paid them 60 bucks and got your next belt. That is not the case at Byung Lee's. All the instructors (usually 5 or 6 of them in each class) are extremely skilled Taekwondo teachers. They're all really nice too. They genuinely seem to be happy we are there. And they treat my child with the up most respect and understanding. When we started going I had earned my first couple of stripes on my white belt a litter faster than my son. When I earned my last one, my son was very upset that he hadn't earned his yet. When the instructor saw him crying he sat him down and explained why I had earned my stripes and why he hadn't and showed him what he would have to do to earn his. My son now begs to go to class. Master Lee himself doesn't teach many of the lower belt classes, but when he does you can tell you're being taught by a true Master. If you want to learn TKD for sport, self-defense, or just for staying in shape, you really can't do any better than Byung Lee's.

The literal meaning (translation) of Tae Kwon Do is "foot, hand, art"- or the way of the hand and foot. However, Tae Kwon Do means much more than kicking and punching. It is a non-violent discipline that achieves the goal of inner peace by conditioning the entire body. This art originated in Korea and it is now the most practiced martial art in the world. Byung Lee's King Tiger Traditional Approach The true symbol of martial arts in the orient is respect. This tradition continues to be taught at Byung Lee's King Tiger academies. If you feel that discipline, respect, and a positive character development are important to you and your family, then Byung Lee's King Tiger Tae Kwon Do is for you. Byung Lee's King Tiger Academies focus on building a strong community through personal growth and individual strength. At our schools you become a vital part of the whole as you realize your own potentials through the dynamic relationships you develop with the instructors and other students. This family spirit is carried home, to the office, and to every other part of life. It is not just self-defense or a way to stay fit. It's a way of life. Who Studies TKD? Everyone can learn TKD. It is a discipline that is specific for the individual-so whatever age, whatever weight, whatever handicap you may have, Tae Kwon Do can help you learn to improve yourself and your lifestyle...

Master Y Kim is an amazing instructor, capturing and keeping the kids attention with fun exercises and learning experiences. He knows every kid by name, seems to genuinely care about their progress and is great at recognizing where kids need extra help. Ms Petra is always there with a smile on her face to greet children and parents alike, and to make sure the kids have the best time. No matter how busy she is, she always makes time to ask how you are doing. The program at Master Chang's blends taekwondo instruction with character building skills and experiences. The staff and class helpers foster an atmosphere of positivity, support, and respect amongst the kids in a fun and engaging way. My child looks forward to every class he goes to, and this is the first activity where he hasn't complained once about going, or asking when it will be over.  We recently also had his birthday party there and it was super fun for all involved, including even the parents who got to participate in the taekwondo lesson, watch a performance from the talented demo team of students from this location, and hold boards while their children broke them with the skills they learned at the party. Parents let us know how much fun their children had and commented on how engaging Master Y Kim was specifically. I highly recommend anyone to try out taekwondo classes at Master Chang's and specifically this location.

I took my son in to ask about age ranges they accept and was greeted by a very kind and friendly man. He talked to my 3 year old for a few minutes and was very welcoming. He explained how it all works which follows: $32 gets you one private session which is an assessment and two group classes. Your child also gets a Gi (uniform) included in this price which makes it a pretty good deal. The assessment went really well and we have our two group classes still to decide, but it's a pretty obvious decision. If you and your child decide to take the plunge, there is a 1 year contract you must sign and I believe it's $100/month, but not quite sure though. The owner/instructor is incredibly good with children and had my son warmed up to him and laughing hard and following instruction really well during the assessment. This alone was enough to sell me on the place, but their structure of working on concentration, fitness, discipline, then finally once everything else is out of the way, you being technique.

Master Lewis is a great instructor and is very practical when it comes to self defense. Rather than several Mcdojos in the area, he's a hands on instructor and still actively competes. He's has great credentials in the martial arts community and his students go on to win national competitions. I had some prior martial arts experience beforehand and I still learned a lot from him and his senior students. I highly recommend for anyone that's looking for a martial arts school for themselves or their children.

From what I saw of the training it didn't seem too particularly strict, but all the participants and the trainers definitely enforced respect and discipline. Upon arrival I actually got to see an earlier class filled with younger kids (seemed like ages 6-10) and they were doing a mix of punches and kicks in sparring gear, and katas. The instructor seemed like a balanced mix of caring, strict instructing, and fun. I also liked that I, as a guest, was greeted very kindly by the primary instructor and the rest of the trainers. It was a refreshing environment to be in. They offer a lot of deals and also do events like birthday parties. If you want a deal, stop by and talk to the staff!
