Contrary to UP's cited requirements (3.0 GPA or higher, no suspensions or excessive discipline…read morereports, etc.) Principal Valerie Hatcher rejected my son's application without hesitation. My soon-to-be Junior had a rocky Freshman year (which he's made up for), and now boasts a 3.82 GPA, and is slated to graduate early! Regardless of his current status, Ms. Hatcher concluded my son didn't meet UP's requirements because of a D on his 9th grade transcripts! It's pathetic that a school would dismiss a student's tenacious effort and progress because of a less than satisfactory FRESHMAN grade. Not only is there a transition phase kids face when moving from Jr High to High School, but these kids were also coming from virtual learning, mask requirements, etc. The district should really take these scenarios into consideration, and review UP's admission requirements - both published and unpublished.

Having a culture of high standards of rigor and discipline is great, but what good is being done the students if half their teachers are ALWAYS new because the toxicity of admin pushes teachers out every year??

Horrible school. Vice Principal Veronica Cueva is very bias towards her teachers. Does not see the…read morestudents side and instead takes the teachers perspective. 8th grade math teacher Mrs. Washington does not let students use the restroom whether it be a woman or man. Her classroom is close to tyrany since she treats her students bad besides some of her favorite kids in her classes. Does not try to build you up but brings you down and makes you feel inferior. Some teachers in this school actually make sure their students feel welcome in this school, like Janice Keaton that teaches us things. Some of the security gaurds have a authority complex. Ms. Angela is very rude to students and doesn't here us out. Otherwise she is talking to the lids that she favorites. The security gaurd that also doubles as the baseball coach is also bery rude and makes students feel more like gum under his shoe than actual people. The dress code also is discriminatory towards the women students in the school. They worry more about how short their shorts are instead of the teachers that make students hold their bodily functions to wait for everybody to finish their test. I hate this school.

I'm the first to leave a review here because this school deserves to be seen for what it really is…read more To start--this isn't just a "hate review." I've had some good experiences here and there are a few great teachers. I've been at this school for two years. At first, it honestly felt amazing--those first months were like heaven. But over time, heaven turned into hell. Back in middle school, I was called the N-word (hard "-er") on three separate occasions: once by a white male I thought was my "friend," and twice by Latino males on a field trip. I also remember walking outside and hearing a group of white boys yelling the word like it was a joke. That's when I realized this environment wasn't safe at all. What made it worse is that the administration rarely takes situations like this seriously. Teachers often act passive-aggressive--not always racial, but dismissive--and staff seldom step in when things happen. After a while, it felt like you just had to deal with it alone. I stayed because my life outside school has been stressful, and compared to regular school this place seemed like the "easier" option. But next year, I'm leaving. I want anyone considering this school--especially if you're Black or a person of color--to know what it's really like. There are positives, but the culture, the racism, and the lack of support make it a tough place to be. Edit: I don't know if she still works there, but there was a math tutor (Latina, glasses, chubby build) who was always passive-aggressive toward me. One time in class, two other students were acting up (one of them the same guy who had called me the N-word before). I had already done my math work and got on my phone because my mom had texted me--this was like 10 minutes before dismissal, and I had to be ready since we were leaving right away. Instead of checking the kids actually misbehaving, she snapped at me and kicked me out of class. Which was absolutely embarrassing and unacceptable behavior from an ADULT. and I even asked her what did I even do? And she kept telling me to get out. I was about 12 or 13. I told my mom what happened, went back in to get my bag, and said "my mom is here." The tutor didn't even argue--she just looked guilty and said, "Oh, okay." That was the moment I realized some staff were quick to target the wrong people, and it left a lasting impression. I also want to add that every time I was even close to being in trouble, I was always the first one blamed. It genuinely felt like it was because I was Black--and I was the only Black kid there in the class. It makes you second-guess yourself, like maybe you're imagining it, but the pattern kept repeating. Looking back now, I realize there were so many moments of discrimination that I brushed off at the time just to survive. Oh, and just to be clear--I do know the first names of the people involved, and I even have photos of them and also group chats where they admitted to saying it and wanted to apologize cause they wanted to be "down". I'm not including them here because I know how that goes, but trust me, I'm not writing this out of thin air. I've even had a recent encounter with my current teacher that I don't even want to get into, because at this point I want to protect myself from any more discrimination. How can I get in trouble for "not participating" or small things when these are the people here.
