The spaces are a bit narrow. We had a long station wagon, but the space was big and long enough, just let your passengers exit first maybe. Charge was 2 Euro an hour, which I think is fair for the location. Because it's only a few steps to the old towns southern entrance. Later on the parking lot was packed and cars weren't even allowed to line up anymore. The next bigger lot is at the northern end. This location here is a lot better, so don't show up to late if possible. Paying is cash or credit card. Very simple, very safe. Felt secure leaving my car here. San Gimignano is a fantastic little old town. If you are anywhere near this area, don't miss it!

Volterra is a great choice, it had lots of historical sites, plenty of restaurants, and in general, it was amazing. It has an impressive view driving up from the road and looked very formidable from a distance. Be aware that there is no driving without a special permit allowed inside the walls, so you need to find parking in a lot outside. We had a nice airbnb just inside the gates and loved our late night and early morning walks around the town before it got busy. The shops, restaurants, and scenic viewpoints were fun to stroll through at our leisure. It was amazing to see the city inhabitants that keep this amazing historical town a living breathing city as they carried out their daily tasks that involved a lot of uphill walking! The labryth of cobblestone roads really add to the setting and are fun to get lost in as you visit the locals' thriving businesses.

A fortress-like town, Volterra was a center of Etruscan art and commerce from the 9th century BCE. Alabaster carvings products are famous in Volterra. I now appreciate anything that was made of alabaster sold @ Goodwill for 99cents that says: "Genuine Alabaster Hand-carved Made in Italy" The Roman Theatre (1st century BC), was excavated in the 1950s. Andrea Bocelli recorded a music video here once, he doesn't live very far from Volterra. If you like medieval buildings, and maze alleys, you'll enjoy Volterra!

Parking lots are plenty in numbers and quite well sized. Felt safe parking my car here. And best news: Parking is free on sundays! Be aware that many shops are closed then though (or only open until lunchtime). On any other day you just pay and get your ticket at the machine. Easy parking lot to find and convenient location.

And the street parking lots are mostly a bit small, if you arrive with a bigger car. We had a longer station wagon, and parking sideways would have been a bit of an issue. So we always park our car here. It's right at the port and it's covered. Costs between 1.50 and 2 Euros and hour, which we found fair. It's a really safe and secure lot (well, the whole town is safe and peaceful). But there's even a security patrolling around, so, no worries about your vehicle. There are always some spots free, so if you're willing to pay a few bucks you will safe some time driving around looking for a spot. Just head here.
