Masses are held here, and tourists may tour for a fee (currently 7 euros per adult, 5 euros per child aged 7-12, and free for younger children) on most days of the week. The building consists of the Baroque-style main chapel, the High Chorus with stained-glass windows, the Transept with Romanesque vaults and a dome, the nine Gothic-style radiating chapels, the Patriarch's dressing room, the chapel of Bartholomew Joanes with Renaissance paintings, the Baptistery, and the sacristy that is not open to visitors. My husband has been inside fancier churches such as those in the Vatican, but Lisbon Cathedral is probably the fanciest church that I have ever entered. We walked around the interior for quite some time and marveled at and photographed the gorgeous architecture.

The church is open daily for masses and has no entrance fee. My tour guide drove me to this church. The exterior of the church looks more like a house than a church, but it is beautiful nonetheless. It shows an image of the saint, who is Lisbon's most popular saint, as well as a grand staircase leading inside. I did not get to tour the interior, but I heard that it has a crypt, relics, vaulted ceiling, and paintings.

Today the building houses the Diocesan chancery, administrative services, Patriarchal Court, and museum. Admission for a guided tour is currently four euros. Tours may include the Royal Pantheon of the Bragança, daily life at the monastery, azulejos tiles that depict historical scenes, the royal burials, the Patriarchate of Lisbon, and the building architecture. Furthermore, visitors may climb to the roof to view the surrounding Alfama neighborhood. On vacation my husband and I made a brief stop here. We admired the monastery's beautiful architecture and surrounding neighborhood.

We walked into the monastery to find a man accepting payment to enter. Payment was €4/person. One could also use the toilets for €0.50/person. We decided we wanted to use the bathroom before visiting the monastery. I asked the worker about the bathrooms and immediately he was surly. "Yes, there are bathrooms." There were 4 of us (€2 total). The smallest bill I had was a €10. He looked at me and said, "no." I apologies and said that a €10 note was the smaller I had. He still said no. I don't if he didn't have change or if he just didn't want to do it, but regardless he was rude and uninviting. Because of his bad attitude we decided not to visit the monastery.

My eye was drawn to the absolutely amazing portico of this church that is located in the Pombaline…read moredistrict. While it could use some cleaning, there is no mistaking the artistry and elegance here. The portal is all that remains from the original Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia, which was destroyed by the 1755 earthquake. The original structure had been commissioned in the 15th century by the widow of King João II, Leonor, on the site of an old synagogue. Decorated with a rich profusion of Manueline details, with an emphasis on angels, flowers, armillar spheres and the cross of the Ordem de Cristo, the Portal further displays, in the tympanum, the Virgem Maria protecting with her mantle historical figures, namely the pope Leão X. The tile walls, gold chapels, Greco ceiling were ornate & spectacular. There are tours in English & other languages along with a museum. It originally was a shrine that housed relics. Sao Roque (1295-1327) was canonized for his healing of plague victims and his feasts day commemorated on the 16 August. After Sao Roque's death he became a symbol for the protection from the Black Death plague which ravaged much of Europe. King Manuel I of Portugal believed that a relic from Saint Roque would protect Lisbon and he constructed a small shrine to the west of Lisbon to house the relic. The holy relic provided little protection for Lisbon which suffered horrendously at the hands of the plague. But the church has remained spectacular.

Seeing a piece of Portuguese history in person is something I've always wanted to do. Since this castle is atop the city, it offers some of the best views of this bustling town. There's a small museum on the garden grounds which features information about the castle's former residents and very cool artifacts like pottery and even bones. I learned a lot about the castle and Lisbon itself including its roots in Islam which I found very interesting. The castle itself is merely ruins at this point but you can still climb up to many of the towers for even better viewpoints of the city below. The peacocks on the grounds were amazing too and we got to see baby peacocks! There's snacks and a gift shop too but we didn't stick around for more than the sightseeing. It was about 15 euros per person for entry, as far as I can remember. I'd recommend visiting this spot!
