This is a magnificent place! I have stayed here many times but back then it was called the…read moreSonnenhof. It was once a summer villa of the Rothschilds but had been seized by the Nazis. It was magnificent as the Sonnenhof but is even more so now.
They renovated the place and removed some newer but unattractive rooms in a separate wing.
The site is wonderful, overlooking a broad valley and on a clear day you can see the outline of Frankfurt. Service is impeccable. Totally invisible but attentive. The food is excellent but vastly overpriced. Breakfast is unbelievable. Everything freshly baked and squeezed. The dining room is magnificent - expensive bordering the silly - but be sure to make reservations. There are some very good restaurants in town on the Hauptstraße but the Rothschild dining room needs to be experienced.
It's a bit of a walk from the center of town and all uphill. The grounds abut a large greenspace that is forested with old, towering trees. There are trails but be careful - it's easy to get disoriented.
Konigstein has several perfectly decent hotels ranging from spartan to good but if you have any reason to come here (or want to take a few day's break from Frankfurt) this is the place to stay.
