I tried the chocolate flavor and it had a sort of synthetic artificial flavor to it. The other members of my entourage didn't think much of their ice creams either. On the presentation front, the display just lures you in. Too bad they don't actually serve such a presentation. I am talking elaborate decorations, sauces, and patterns here. The cones are fresh and warm. The scoop sizes are normal and the prices aren't too bad. I just feel that the ice cream is mostly built for hype.

Reopened in May 2016, the new place kept all the furniture, machinery and practice of great homemade ice cream from its predecessor. This place is ideally situated in a quiet side street right next to a kids' playground and benches in the shade of tall maple trees. The ice cream is delicious - the owner prides himself in natural ingredients, and you may run into him buying his strawberries in the nearby REWE market for his strawberry ice cream. Try his flavors "Sahnegrieß-Himbeer", "Marzipan-Karamell" or "Latte Macchiato", and make sure to ask for his homemade strawberry sauce! There is outdoor and indoor seating, prices are moderate, and the owner is very friendly and often finds the time for a little chat, whether about boxing or Paul Auster's novels. Mit der Neueröffnung im Mai 2016 hat das Eiscafé nicht nur die Ausstattung, sondern auch die Tradition toller hausgemachter Eiscreme übernommen. Das Café liegt in einer ruhigen Seitenstraße an einem Platz im Schatten großer Ahornbäume neben Sitzbänken und einem kleinen Kinderspielplatz. Das Eis ist wirklich lecker - der Besitzer schwört auf natürliche Zutaten, und man trifft ihn gelegentlich beim Erdbeerkauf im REWE nebenan für sein Erdbeereis. Die Sorten "Himbeer-Sahnegrieß", "Marzipan-Karamell" und "Latte Macchiato" muss man probieren - und nicht vergessen, nach der hausgemachten Erdbeersauce zu fragen! With a selection of over 20 flavors ranging from Fruits of the Forest to Limoncello, there is something for every age and taste. On warm days expect to wait upwards of 30 minutes to be served. The line of customers will always spill out of the cafe' and onto the cobblestoned psudo-courtyard of the Wyck/Ceramique neighborhood convergence. If you are impatient, cross one of Maastricht's footbridges to the second location located less than 1K away and adjacent to Stadtpark. Although I do not see long lines of coffee customers, as the locals have many choices for premium grinds, the warm drinks prepared by the attendants are never acrid and always frothy. Uncertain where the gelato comes from - whether it is churned in house, or outsourced. The Luna Rossa refrigerated truck is often parked below my flat with bins of frozen goodness being loaded in and out of the cafe. Side note: special orders of gelato for events and parties are available upon request. Luna Rossa is closed from November through March.
