Italian food is a strange concept in Melbourne. You have the strip on Lygon Street that has just…read morebecome this bogan infested tourist trap whereby restaurants charge way too much for fuck all and the quality is largely shit. Then you've got all these solid Pellegrini's and Tiamo type joints that serve stoic, no frills Italian at reasonable prices but they ain't nothing special. Then you have the more fancy end. La Taverna would like to occupy the fancy end but their food is more Pellegrini's (which is not a bad thing). The trouble is, you know you can get solid Italian food with zero fuss at these other places, whereas La Taverna is all about the table cloths and cutlery and shit. So, if being a bit pampered while eating some pretty decent Italian classics is your bag, then La Taverna may well be for you. Me, I prefer to be largely ignored and dished up a quick meal with no fuss when I eat Italian. Am I a freak?

A run of the mill pizza and pasta joint with a vague nod to the American diners of the 1950s,…read moreDicey's Pizza is one of those businesses that is very much what-you-see-is-what-you-get. It's got all your basic toppings on the menu in both pizza and pasta, along with a few varieties of steak, chicken, seafood, deserts and side orders. At one point they were doing some really scrumptious chips and gravy (which I appeared to be the only one ordering; they always seemed a bit perplexed as to what to do next when I placed my order), although the last time I ate it, it was merely brown, liquid-y flour. But hey, it's possible that they might have pulled their game back together in the meantime. The pizzas are heavy on the toppings, particularly when they feature that rather vile variety of shredded ham, but the crust is a nice medium deep pan and the varieties without the ham are pretty satisfying. I just have a really strong prejudice against that generic shredded ham. The cheesier toppings are good for when you're feeling something heavy and greasy. The pasta might be nice in house, but the creamy varieties are a little on the gluggy side from time to time. The prices are on the cheaper side of standard, and it's free delivery to the local area for a minimum of only $12. The restaurant itself is somewhat amusing, with a couple of posters of James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and other stars of 1950s hanging on beige coloured walls. Dicey's will certainly hit that heavy, junky spot when you're in the zone for it, and there's always a place for that kind of takeaway. You never know when you'll need it.

This place makes superb pizza that is seriously cheap! I am currently staying at an airport hotel…read moreand I was seriously starving when I first arrived. I decided to look around for something I could get delivered and this placed popped up in my search bar with the possibility to take all the hassle out of ordering by doing it online. With fairly average expectations I was stunned when my pizza was delivered in less than 30mins! My pizza including delivery cost only $13.50 for a large half half with both seafood and meatlovers! I was by this point, thinking to myself, well it can't be that good for that price, but once again my expectations were challenged when I opened the box. The pizza was much bigger than a normal large pizza and the ingredients looked surprisingly gourmet. Mussels, calamari and tasty baby prawns adorned the top of the seafood half and a generous display of salami, ham and Spanish onions presented themselves on the other half. I took a few slices of the pizza and was stunned by the taste! I can quite confidently say that it is one of the best seafood pizzas I've ever eaten. The flavour of the dough was superb. And it was nice and soft and not at all chewy like most pizza these days. I quickly demolished all of the seafood section and I am currently eyeing off the meat lovers and wondering whether my parter will notice if a piece or two is missing when he arrives!
