Attended the Valentines Day event with the live band - great idea! Checking into the event at the door should have been more ' polished ' as the person sat in a booth which the guests had to go up to vs a person standing at the door greeting the guests. The burger I ordered was just warm and the tomato on the burger was sliced so thin , I could almost see through it; lettuce was limp . Add-on Caesar salad had little dressing if any. read more

Came to this place with high expectations. This place is like 3 hours from Victoria. The entrance and property is well planned. Gardening and up keep needs improvement. The reason I don't recommend this place is due to the staff as somewhat they seem to be racist as I felt abit of the vibe from front desk staff and the hotel was not full yet gave me room in the back of the property. sadly, due to a "mistake" on their end, I now need to post a fairly poor review for "painters lodge" in campbell river, so here it goes: I have never stayed at Painters lodge, nor will I ever after this fiasco. I booked a room at the painters lodge for 5 days in july through trip advisor, and it seemed like that was the end of it, a fair price for what the room was. Fast forward to today ( almost 3 weeks after I had paid in full for the accomodations, even had my full itinerary ) and I get an email stating basically: ** oops, looks like painters lodge goofed up and sadly put THE WRONG PRICE on the website, in fact the price has doubled now. So either pay up, or we will have to cancel your reservation, just a mistake, you understand right? this is a scam, and a very common one these days among smaller privately owned hotels and Air BnBs..... Ive been watching testimonials from customers who have seen this all too many times. well, I am in the process of filing an official complaint with the BBB as I type this. How are these places allowed to get away with this immoral type of behaviour? Lets just see what the BBB thinks about this shady nonsense..... and in the meantime I guess I will need to find new accomodations, which is a hassle. I can not recommend this place, they may try to change prices on you, and when we are talking about a jump from 140/night to 280/night you may feel as unhappy about it, as I do. 1 out of 10, right outta the gate. read more

Unless you absolutely have no other options I would completely not recommend this establishment. Upon arrival it took more than 15 minutes to get the attention of anyone in the building to check in as no one was at the reception. Lots of staff in the dining and bar area but not one person who saw the line up happening at check in tried to help. Some of us even phoned front desk to get someone's attention and not a soul went for the phone. Walking into our suit 305, the bathroom has old dead spiders with webs, the area around the toilet was dirty which is appalling. The bathroom mirror was dirty and looks like it hasn't been wiped down in quite some time. Only 2 full towels and 1 small face towel and hand towel were left in the washroom in a 2 bedroom suit with 3 adults booked for the suit. There is a notice from the hotel (picture included in review) showing offers for new towels. After 2nd day it was noticed house keeping never came. Well this establishment doesn't offer house cleaning while guests are staying according to the snooty front desk staff working around 9pm on August 19th. This means make sure if you are looking for somewhere to stay for more than 2 days you will need somewhere to both get new towels and take out your own garbage and clean your room. "Air conditioning" mentioned on booking is actually a $20 fan from Walmart that barely works. Bring your own fan during the heat wave if you have a current booking! There are no bug screens on any door or window so you will get eaten alive by mosquitoes like we did if you open any to let cool air in. For the amount of money you pay for the rooms, no pool or hot tub, dirty rooms, miss information regarding room booking for mobility challenged guests (all rooms designated for this also have 2 steps in the rooms according to staff upon check in). My mother uses a walker and a accessible room was supposed to be completely accommodating for her according to staff upon booking, yet there are stairs separating the bathroom/ entrance and the bedroom . It is completely not worth the money. I highly recommend looking into other options. The only positives about the establishment are the free ample parking, free wifi, well kept grounds, small fitness facility, pretty views of the water (not accessible to swim from property), and the continental breakfast was great! Many local family members had many a negative review of this property and now I know why. The website does well in fooling you, the locals usually no best. My experience shows this establishment has much room for growth in cleanliness, reception staff attitude, general maintenance, communication of amenity offerings to potential guests, and overall care. read more

Super cute rustic charm. The place was what you expect for $119 a night. Easy parking, well kept grounds, but the shower and bathroom is from the 70s or 80s. The furniture is super dated. Some of the lights didn't work. But overall, happy with the place and experience. We liked the location and each room was multilevel with its own living room on the bottom floor, bathroom on the middle floor and big bedroom on the top floor. We would stay here again at this price. Wifi was strong so that's a plus. Overall, 3.5 stars. read more

Location was very nice with great view from restaurants and lounge. We had a loft unit for 4 of us which worked well. The room was clean and included a balcony with a table and chairs. The beds were comfortable. There was one bathroom. The toilet and tub were enclosed and the sink was outside the bathroom-convenient in many ways. The rate included breakfast which was buffet style in the Legends dining room which had a nice panoramic view of the river and April Point island. The food was okay but nothing special. There are 3 options with the Legends dining room-buffet only, the Tyee pub, and the lounge bar that had tapas. Not too many choices but had a good meal from the pub. There is outdoor seating for all of the options overlooking the water which is pleasant. Parking was at the unit (there are separate buildings and cabins to stay in-each has parking area) but it was sometimes difficult to get a parking space close by. There is no air conditioning and no screens on the windows or door. There is no elevator as well. There are stairs in the loft unit both down into the first bedroom and up to the other room. There isn't really any sitting area-just the beds and a desk. The beach is rocky so not really a place to hang out. They do have a pool and hot tub which is enclosed and you are given a key code to get in. The wifi was spotty at best. It's an unusual system where you look for the room number with the best signal and use a password-not secure obviously. I would be online and get bumped off frequently. When trying to resolve a problem online using chat, I had to keep starting over as the signal didn't last long. The staff were a mix with some being very friendly and helpful and a couple seeming unhappy to be there. We had one problem when ants were all over the toilet and called the front desk. They were coming up around where the toilet seal is/should be and I asked for a resolution. The only thing they could come up with was bug spray and it took awhile to get someone to come up. I'm allergic to some ants so time was important to me to get rid of them. At least they did address it and we didn't have another problem with them before we left. We didn't take advantage of any of their tours. We booked directly with the tour company. While there were some bumps and things I didn't like, it still was a nice location and comfortable unit for a family stay. read more

Very disappointed in the Pub side of Painters Lodge. The lovely ladies that served us need an apology from the owners who have dropped the ball on keeping on top of how the kitchen is run. Our food was not worth the price they charge. For a restaurant on the water it should have been busy and it wasn't especially this is the money making season. Stayed here in 2 rooms. The hotel is just ok - it is not the destination that it was. The units are comfortable but there is a management problem. Nobody cares! Pillows are cheap,fat and hard. Asked for a softer pillow after an uncomfortable night and was told they don't have any others. The shower is ok but if anyone flushes a toilet you get scalded - no pressure balancing valves. The dining room and the pub are mediocre. The menu is pretentious but doesn't deliver. They have no idea of how to cook. And they are understaffed and/or totally disorganized. A very amateurish effort in a beautiful setting. If they don't already know it, they have a serious management problem. I had booked a 3 day holiday at Painter's Lodge with 3 other family members 3 months ago . All arrangements were made with flights , car rental ,ferry service and time off work . I received a call yesterday , 3 weeks before our holiday , informing me the resort will be closed due to " no power " . What organization can't fix a power problem in 3 weeks ? We are currently staying at one of the cabins at painters lodge. The room is definitely not clean - hair on bathroom floor, dirt/crumbs on sofa, will definitely NOT be taking a bath: see pics. Half of the lights don't work. The fridge is on a table which is super hokey. The cabin is roomy which is nice, however there is only one nightstand and a tiny dresser. The TV is horrible! It is blurry and just overall terrible quality. There seems to be only one front desk staff on a certain times of the day and they seem to be the ones that do everything. We needed something for our room at 7pm and the front desk lady is the one who brought it to us. This would explain why it took me 20mins to get through to the front desk in first place. The grounds are nice, much smaller than expected. The staff is friendly. Overall I would have given a higher rating if the cost wasn't so much. For the $300+ a night price we expected more. First off this review is for the Tyee Pub at Painter's Lodge, not the entire resort itself as we only stopped by for lunch after spending the morning hiking around the trails near Campbell River. Pub food is pub food, it's pretty standard and pretty much the same no matter where you go and the Tyee Pub is no different. Since we were at a historic fishing lodge I decided on the salmon burger and wasn't disappointed. The salmon was fresh, and I believe local, but the remainder of sandwich was unexciting and came with the standard default fries. The view from the patio was quite spectacular and our server was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. After taking a quick peek at the rest of the resort I can understand why people stay at Painter's Lodge. The next time I have the urge to catch a 40lbs salmon I'll be sure to head to Painter's Lodge, the next time I have the urge for really good pub food I might head elsewhere. read more

Paid way to much for the room. Found out after we arrived that going rate was $229 and we paid $340. We asked to check in an hour early and received an email they couldn't accommodate our request but would do their best to accommodate us on arrival. We arrived at 3:15pm and had to change for a wedding at 4 (check in is 4). They told us we couldn't have the room so we asked for a place to change. We were pointed to the lobby washroom and had to change in bathroom stalls, some accommodation that is! We also found out that our friend was given an ocean view room with no reservation upon his arrival at 3pm for $229. Why was this not offered to us? Why did we pay $340 for a dungeon garden room? Why couldn't we have that room early to get changed for a wedding? Next was the room. We had to leave the wedding between the ceremony and reception to check in (20 min drive ea way.) Finally got our cave of a room, dark and smelled like a mix of stale cigarette smoke, mold and fish. No bedside table lamp, tv remote didn't work and the tv was hanging off a broken mount with the cords hanging out the bottom, stains on the carpet everywhere, broken towel rod and toilet seat. No screens on the windows, no AC, mold in the bathroom faucet and the whole place had clearly last been renovated in the 80s. Terrible room, terrible customer service and terrible rates. Better off with a cheap chain hotel. Update: After 2 voicemails I was finally able to get ahold of the manager Kira. After explaining the above concerns with her politely she only seemed concerned with our friends room being undercharged. She told me she would pass the deficiencies with out room on to maintenance and get back to me. I never did here back from her even after 2 more emails to check in. We have visited this facility at all of it's restaurants including the breakfast buffet, Pub and dining room as well as staying in the main lodge. Today we met some out of province friends there for lunch and discovered that the pub was now closed for the season(previously they closed Jan01 until spring. We were met with many staff mulling around, one of which were laughing about how the tables hadn't been cleaned in addition he was showing the other staff his rendition of playing an air guitar to the loud sounds of Deep Purple- Highway Star blasting through the restaurant (dining music? Really?) The carpets were disgusting looking like they hadn't been vacuumed for many days(it was on 11:30am and was deserted) lots of food accumlation from neglect. The chowder was luke warm(microwaved?), bland and mediocre. The fish and chips(ling cod) was $20 per plate, for that princely sum you were rewarded with 2 greasy overcooked(very crisp) battered pieces of barely passable fish, fries and a dish of tartar sauce and tasteless coleslaw. Service was slow, the restaurant was very empty, and to top it off a large cockroach was in a corner dead near our table. Evidence that cleanliness is not important. The manager didn't respond to my comments on the way out, stating that this will be our last visit and seemed disinterested with our comments about the condition of the carpet(lots of food crumbs and particles around all tables) and of the cockroach(a staff member removed it) In response to our complaint to Painter's Lodge online he stated that the food not cleaned up all over the carpet was people's soiled footwear tracked in from outside(the entire lobby is carpeted and was clean)and that the cockroach was wildlife. Since the new management have taken over this year there has been a dramatic drop in the quality of service in all areas. The outdoor patio has been closed on numerous occasions this summer(in the height of tourist season) including the labour day long weekend. Supposedly due to shortage of staff, which reflects on the current management or mismanagement. Give this place a miss until the current management have been replaced! The death knell is tolling loudly at Painter's Lodge and is reflected by the lack of people that continue to frequent it. read more

This was a pleasant place to stay. This is an upscale fishing lodge from which we launched our adventure trips up the Bute inlet. Nicely appointed rooms, heated pool, 2 hot tubs, and onsite restaurant and lounge. There is a sister resort April Point, where you will have access via a boat ferry which runs every 20 minutes. Fun little ride for dinner or a drink. All in all, we would stay there again. Nice and attentive staff. Good restaurant even though it was a bit on the expensive side. That was to be expected. We didn't take advantage of the fishing trips or whale watching but both are available at he lodge. read more

We have been wanting to plan a getaway to Painters Lodge for a number of years and finally managed to make it here for lunch in the Tyee Pub. The location is beautiful with a sandy walk on beach and great views of Quadra Island. We were told to sit wherever we liked and after about 10 minutes got up to get some menus for ourselves. We ordered the Roasted Chicken Cobb Lettuce Wrap and the B.C. Clam Chowder from the friendly and helpful young lady who served us. My wrap was surprising in that the wrap was actually lettuce, and very tasty at that. My husband didn't have such good luck with his clam chowder. First time out it was "just warm". It came back hot, but with potatoes that left their pot before the cooking process had been completed. The entire resort is in need of some love and attention. You can see that at some point it was a go-to destination, however that time has unfortunately passed. read more

I'd leave 0 stars if I could. A bunch of thieves, the shining star of the Oak Bay Marine Group. Painter's lodge found my sunglasses and then put them for sale in the gift shop. The glasses were dirty, scratched and clearly worn. Their reasoning was that the glasses were old, which is why they also couldn't produce the inventory list for them and the scratches were due to their poor storage of glasses in the off season which they claim they just throw $200+ sunglasses in a box unprotected. Still, doesn't explain how there was dirt built up in the corner of the lenses and frames as well as the labeling worn off the frames. According to the staff, they couldn't possibly be my glasses there was a sticker on them and it would be impossible for them to put a sticker on the glasses. A bunch of crooks, the rooms are decent and the hot water is good but watch your things. Also if they tell you the "Garden View" doesn't look at the parking lot they are lying, it looks at the parking lot with a few bushes that you can see straight through. read more

It is markedly difficult to shutter a seasonal resort, and then expect to open up again in the spring with tight staff and flawless operational condition of a property. However, Painter's has done it year after year for as long as I can remember. Fact is they are FANTASTIC.... but after a number of days the amenities run thin. I think that is because the amenities are fishing in a boat, all day, and enjoying the barbecued fish and incredible view of ships passing the inlet while you melt into your scotch with the ice cubes. I was going to give it four, because it is expensive, it isn't easy keeping solid staff, but everyone is so nice, and frankly there are some real cute, pleasant people here that know how to make someone feel wanted and welcome. Southern Hospitality has nothing on Canadian Hospitality. The four stars is because the F&B operation isn't.... isn't.... always the best. The lunches are fine, and yes the beer is always there, but the dinners are limited, the fine dining is boring, and the pub gets old fast but I will never ever ever complain. I love the atmosphere. Why they get five? The overworked, overqualified, overly badass and fun as all hell guides. Spanky, Hopper, Hairball, Islander.... these are some of the greatest guys ever. Ron can get out there a bit, but don't worry he won't bite. Watch out for Fubar. He might take you back to his place for a party, or might get you in a fight. Anyhoo... I love this place with all my heart. SECRETS: 1) they let us barbecue our days catch next to the pool. I am not sure how much they charge a head, but they give us napkins, a salad, rolls, etc. I think it is rare, but if you are nice to the F&B people they will hook it up. 2) The drinks are ML for the US people. Order a double. And they drink Caeser's not Bloody Marys. Think Clamato, not Tomato Juice. Think wretch, but they love em. 3) For the morning beer and lunch order, make sure to ask for some hot chocolate and schnapps or baileys. Trust me.... the cold bumps on the way out will be eased quickly as you set up your lines and drop your riggers. 4) One time in August a couple years back, I saw the Northern Lights. I live just up the road from this place and love the area. it has been a while because of COVID but thought I would wander down for a dinner at the pub. It was busy so they put me inside with a nice view. I found the food was not worth the effort, in fact I could of gone somewhere else for fast food and it would have been much better. 6 of us recently spent a weekend up at Painter's Lodge - we had an amazing time! Accommodations: We all got ocean view rooms, we had a big grass lawn in front of our rooms over looking the ocean, which was perfect to watch the wildlife and ships go by while drinking a nice cold drink. Rooms are basic but were very clean and comfortable. Fishing: The fishing was a blast! We had Jason - amazing guide! He knows the surrounding area very well and taught us all we needed to know about fishing. He was very accommodating and had a great attitude the entire time, I didn't expect to laugh so much while fishing! We had such a great time that we ended up booking a third day fishing, attempting to catch that illusive giant salmon! Our group ended up bringing home: 4 big ling cod and 2 salmon (7 lbs & 18 lbs) Food/Dining: That gets thumbs down from me. The pub food was OK. We went over to April Point and enjoyed a great lunch (great service too!) But were less than impressed with the dining at Painter's. The hours don't work for those who are fishing. Friday we were on the water from 4pm-8pm, by the time we were ready for dinner the dining room was shut and had to order from the pub menu, they were under staffed. Sunday morning some of us didn't want the big all you can eat brunch, but that's all that was available when we were off the water at 10:00. We were told we'd have to wait until 11:00 when the pub opens and order the lunch menu. Overall it's a wonderful memorable place, we'll be back very soon!! read more

The food at the Legends dining room was 'so-so'. The ceasar salad and heirloom salad were good ..the two pasta dishes - clam linguini and salmon papadelle were dry and boring. My parents are great and know this. Out of the blue they booked five days at Painter's Lodge for my wife, me, my favourite uncle and themselves. We sent our two children to spend some time with their other grandparents. From the moment I walked into the lodge until I left everything was taken care of. Perfectly. Top points go to the Breakfast. Both the food and the service rival any 5 diamond hotel in the world. I awoke each day at 6am craving breakfast. My mother has serious dietary restrictions - no problem. Everything was triple checked. Our server caught a problem before it was served - and the kitchen remade the dish - a five minute delay that saved my mother a painful reaction. Well Done!!! The food at dinner was excellent in the pub, the dining room at Painter's Lodge and at April's Point. ....here is the best part - the shuttle ride between the two sister resorts. We had dinner twice across the water at April's Point. The 8 minute ocean ride is spectacular and the skipper is BRILLIANT! Talk to him - he is full of info. So many positives - the hiking was great, the spa beautiful, the fishing was mind blowing. We are booking ten days with the kids next year. This is totally the quintessential British Colombia experience. They only allow me to rate them a 5/5 - it is really a 10/5!!!! read more

Christmas at the Lodge Not normally open this year it was, pleasant place to come to overlooking the water with standard hotel room large layout, cedar wooden beamed ceilings and comfy beds, hot tub was open too. Old school resort staff all worked hard to make sure we were comfortable. Christmas eve in pub and advise stay away from goat cheese pasta, maybe a mistake but whatever spice cook put in it was absolutely aweful,couldn't eat it, told waitress but nothing happen to correct situation. Tasted like pungent spic was added. Food overall substandard as was the coffee and morning breakfast. A bit of fine tuning, some paint this place could be awesome. read more

This review is primarily for the lodging aspect of PL, which is excellent based on my recent one-night stay. My single room was a spacious king, quiet, airy, and clean, w/ a nice outdoor patio. The resort itself is a world-class center for salmon fishing expeditions, and I met a group of 6 Italians who'd come over to do just that. There were people from many nations at the lodge, and it made for a nice mix. I ate - or should I say, drank - dinner in the pub, which was also very nice, and featured the same great views that every other room and venue did. WiFi was fast and the staff was courteous, professional, and friendly. One nice touch was the lodge's sister resort across the sound, easily accessible by the lodge's shuttle ferry, itself a nice 10-minute ride. Overall, the value was better than good; it was a good deal! I'll definitely return and will stay more than one night. read more

Ordered the seared tuna, when it arrived I noticed it had a very fishy smell plus it was not seared it was over cooked & looked like it was thawed out. I sent it back as I was worried I'd get sick, had calamari instead, it was just as bad. The other people in our party ordered fish & chips, it was second rate, over battered, very little fish but tasty chips. For such a high end lodge you would expect much better! read more

What a beautiful place to have a meal! Sitting out on the sunny deck, with a view of Georgia Street and Quadra Island, what could be better? We were greeted by a friendly service, knowledgable about the area into herself and spent a few years on Quadra Island. She made fabulous recommendations, we enjoyed the fisherman soup, a fabulous lush green salad, and the special of the day, roasted chicken, rice and veggies delicious, all of it. A party of two of us went to Painter's from the 10th to the 12th. We own a Worldmark timeshare, and got this trip on points (But a LOT of points!) Traveling to Painter's: We flew in by Kenmore Air, which is definitely a great experience! Seaplane rides are highly recommended! Note: Beware the 24-pound weight restriction: they do charge if you're over. Staying at Painter's: Our room was #305, in the building seemingly as far from the ocean view as possible. We asked if we could move to a water-view room, but were told they were "sold out". Funny "coincidence", we met another group of Worldmark owners two doors down.. Are they giving the bad rooms to those who come on points? The Food at Painter's: Overall, the food wasn't very good, with the ONE exception of the Sunday Morning brunch. Be absolutely sure to catch this! It was the best meal all weekend. The pub, however, took two hours to deliver nachos (that tasted microwaved) and chicken wings to our table. We could have walked to town in that time! Service was terrible, too... A real disappointment. The Staff at Painter's: Most staff were helpful. However, JR from Guest Services really went above and beyond for us! They don't offer a shuttle service into Campbell River, but he didn't even hesitate to grab the 12-passenger van and take us to town, and even arranged a pickup time and location! Many thanks to him for that! The fishing guide wasn't talkative and was a little unfriendly, but at least he wasn't rude. However, he didn't seem too interested in actually catching a fish. The Fishing at Painter's: We booked a 4-hour fishing tour. Which is really 3 hours of fishing, and 1 hour of riding in the boat to a fishing location. Just a note... We didn't get any bites for the first two hours, but things started picking up at hour 3. Unfortunately, as soon as we caught our first fish, our guide reeled both lines in and moved. We never did find out why- it seems counterproductive to move away from the hungry fish! Overall, it's a nice resort, but there are too many places that it falls short. Spent three days at Painter's Lodge during early August 2013. The accommodations were great and the food was good. The setting was fantastic. So why am I giving Painter's lodge two stars, I am an avid salmon fisher. I called the lodge in April to find out when the best time was for catching Chinook and Coho. I was told on the phone that July and early August would be spectacular. When we arrived in August and inquired about the fishing we were told that the kings and silvers ended two weeks earlier but that we could fish for pinks. If you know anything about pink salmon you know that you don't travel thousands of miles to fish for pinks. Needless to say, I planned my trip around some bad information, and it was a big frustration. This is too bad because we have stayed at other Oak Bay Marine Group facilities in the past and had a wonderful time. All in all it was a wonderful place to stay, but not great for the serious angler. read more

Location was beautiful. Free water taxi to April point. The room we stayed in had high ceiling and beds were comfy. I just thought the restaurant was ok. Good food but not fabulous. read more

Beds are comfortable, rooms are clean -- a little dated, but that's okay. Love being able to keep Windows and doors open to get cool air in. There's no sir conditioning. But probably best since air condition is noisy. The people who work here are top notch. Everyone is very nice, love that about Canadians. Main question is would I return? Heck yes! Didn't care for the pub food much. It was just okay. That's my only real complaint. Loved going fishing and being able to take the boat to the sister lodge at April point. Also, love getting Aveda products for toiletries and 2 bottles of water. Nice touch. read more
