Really pretty 'beach' (lava rocks, not sand), with several places to access the water to snorkel, but it's kind of remote so getting an Uber home might be difficult. It was impossible for us! Not much nearby either, so plan your day accordingly. The waves were strong and our snorkel gear was giving us issues so we didn't spend much time in the water, but it was still an incredible viewing experience.

Easily the best snorkeling I've seen on the Big Island. I've gone here a handful of times on multiple trips and it never disappoints. The size of the reef here and its proximity to shore makes this a continual winner, time after time. Parking is usually a cinch. I tend to park right before entrance to the national historical park, and then walk down Honaunau Beach to the main jumping off spot. You can usually leave your things anywhere on the rocks, and there's a small beach nearby as well. There's an easy entrance point to the reef where you can sit down, put on your fins/snorkel, and then slide off into the water. Exiting is just as easy. Once you're in, enjoy checking out all the awesome fish all around you. Sometimes there will be dolphins - I found them off to the right in deeper waters. They'll show off and give you a great show if they happen to be in the bay while you're there.

Best free stop to snorkel .. 2 step at Honaunau bay like a lot of Hawaiian places... Are known by more than one name. It's near and across the bay from Pu'Uhonua O HONAUNAU HISTORIC PARK. So if 2 step doesn't show on GPS the historic park might. Also restaurant close called 2 step to get you close. IT'S ONE STREET FROM Hawaiian Park. This is Our 3rd visit to Big Island and did 3 drives south to snorkel at 2 step. It's on of the most amazing free things in Hawaii. LOTS OF FISH.. SAW TURTLE each day.. Puffers, lots of yellow tangs, the Hawaii state fish is gorgeous. LOTS OF FISH .. still some decent coral even though lots of people kicking and standing on it. jerks. BUT the highlight of our 2 week 2 island trip was over 20 spinner dolphins hung out with us for hours. We saw them jumping out in the deep so we and several others swan out there. They swam under us way deep... Then surfaced and swam and jumped all around us. They say early is best time to see them between 6-8 AM. We got rental car knowing some rough roads so we could park off the road. You can pay 5 dollars to park or try your luck off side of road.. We were lucky each time to get decent parking. Brought our own snorkels and floaty vests... Husband wears as back up. I have loved snorkeling and swimming for years... At 50 have to admit I had some trouble out there and getting over the rough terrain. Had some stumbles on the rough uneven lava terrain... Didn't actually fall but it was close. Falling on that jaggid rocks with brare knee would have sucked. Got slammed into jaggid rocks by current and waves. Didn't hurt much but there is some risk. A few other issues.. Following fish.. I went further out or detoured to Hawaiian preserve. Couple times I found it easier to go in and out on boat ramp to far left and swim around. Of course u gave to watch for boats. I highly recommend this as snorkeling location. There is portapotties.. Bring sunscreen towels. Shade umbrellas if you aren't staying in water. Definitely snacks and water. I recommend klenix as sea gets the sinus snotty. Underwater camera and definitely water shoes... Rocky terrain. I feel this is a safe location.. Everyone was super nice. Helping each other and no one bothered our stuff ever. We have portable lock box to be safe to put car keys abd phones. Finding this area can be tricky.. It's very close to Hawaii historic reserve with super long Pu'Uhonua O HONAUNAU HISTORIC PARK. IT'S ONE STREET FROM IT AND RIGHT ACROSS THE BAY. LOTS OF CARS.. If you are looking for sand beach .. this is not your place. No shade or places to buy food .. there is a couple porta potties but everything else you need to come prepared. no life guards. sometimes the waves are calm .. sometimes not so calm so be careful and smart .. if people are struggling to get in and out of the water .. it's maybe not the safest day for you. i find it easier getting into the water at the boat ramp area to the left but obviously have to be careful of boats.

Super easy entrance into the water and it's like being in a human aquarium.

This protected bay has over 120 species of resident fish, and usually has clear water. Other than urchins (7 species) there is no marine life to worry about. Turtle sitings are more likely at high tide when their salad bar (the algae on the rocks) is available. Typically from 9 to 3 daily the Reef Teach volunteers have photo guide books and other reference materials available, along with free advice, defog spray, and reef-safe sunscreen. Water access is the narrow and shallow rocky channel in front of the lifeguard station by the parking and pavilion. Swim fins or sand shoes are recommended. The locals value their feet and swim through it even at low tide when it is only a foot deep. Coming back in you can actually swim all the way back to the sandy channel. The water is usually noticeably warmer and clearer away from the entry. The bay is shallow with only a few places that are even 8' deep at high tide. Unless you really need to, don't stand on the bottom or coral - fins and feet damage it.

If you're considering taking the Historical Hawaiian Outrigger tour with Ehu & Kai, consider this a sign to DO IT! From start to finish, this felt like an experience tailored for our group, supported by the friendliest, chillest staff. A special shout out to the friendly helpers on land who were incredibly fun and out-of-this-world friendly! Our tremendous guide, Nina, went above and beyond to curate an exceptional experience. From the lively banter and building camaraderie between a group of strangers sharing an outrigger to maximizing the amount of wildlife we got to see, being out on the water with this crew felt like being out with a group that's known each other for ages. Along the way, we got historical facts about the area, got to snorkel with an abundance of wildlife, and even enjoyed a visit from a pod of dolphins! Nina--you're truly one of a kind and I cannot thank you enough for being so friendly and thoughtful in your approach to this tour. Sadly, our tour was Nina's last before she heads out for a bit. Here's hoping we'll see her back at Ehu & Kai before we know it!

It took us about 30 mins each way to get there and back. Five stars with the caveat that no one was there when we arrived at 9:00 am (the time we booked online). After about 10 minutes or so, the employee appeared (didn't get his name, unfortunately). As other reviewers note, this place is just a table at the end of a road with a bunch of kayaks and a guy who will rent them to you. Don't expect storage for your belongings or bathrooms. Parking is along the street. All that being said, they give you this info in advance, so you should be prepared. We had our own snorkel gear (or did before I lost mine in the ocean later that day ha ha) so we only needed the kayak and dry bag. A dry bag is necessary (see "lost my gear in the ocean"). The employee gives you all the info you need to find your way to the snorkeling area and back. He said they "lose" about one party a day who overshoots the entrance to the cove when returning and they have to go rescue them. Don't be that person! Once at the snorkeling spot near the monument, you'll see lots of other people and boats, but once you're underwater, you won't notice them - it's like swimming in an aquarium. You need to keep your kayak with you at all times, so if you're paddling with someone else, consider taking turns holding the kayaks and snorkeling. You aren't allowed to dock or approach the shore (this is a hard rule - surly tour guides will yell at you if you get too close). Keep in mind that getting in and out of a kayak in the open ocean is not the same as doing that on the shore or in shallow water. There's no shallow water here at all, so practice in advance or consider taking a tour boat if that's not something you're comfortable with.

The early morning kayaking through the bay is soothing for the soul. We also got lucky and saw some dolphins. The snorkeling is out of this world with such clear water and variety of colorful fish of all sizes. Evan and Steve were both very attentive to all the kayakers and super knowledgeable as we learned a bunch about Hawaiian history, Captain Cook's arrival (and demise), and the lasting legacy of that episode on Hawaii's history. After all the snorkeling, the sandwich lunch hit the spot. It also came with a souvenir water bottle! I had a last minute dietary request and they graciously accommodated. Even though this was our second time, we still had fun and actually learned new details about the history and conservation efforts happening in the area! If you want a fun, yet respectful and ethical experience, this is it!
