Food & Drink Rating: The 2 stars is for the false advertisement of the food and drinks. The single plate of pasta you were only provided arrived cold and the small cup of wine came from a box. They provided a single plate of pasta and small cup of wine that was supposed to be enough for a 2 hr and 40 min opera show (20 mins. included we're of intermission). I saw people actually go next door to the supermarket and brought in sandwiches. Seating: The chairs we sat in for the show became so harsh on my back. One member of my party had to miss the 2nd half because his back hurt so much and waited in the car. I had to shift in my seat multiple times because of the discomfort I was starting to feel from my lower and mid back.

Been waiting all year to attend my first ever Bob Baker Day and it finally came around this past…read moreSunday after being post-poned for a few months due to bad weather. Unfortunately, not even the puppet master has pull when it comes to controlling the weather. Tomato, tomato!! :'( The park was absolutely oozing chaotic, whimsical energy with puppets galore, vibrant costumes afoot, and every possible themed variation of clown that you could think of. I'm not them joking -- if you can imagine it, someone definitely DIYed it. I was in awe of all the creative outfits I saw because it reminded me of my music festival and raver days where I used to spend weeks making my own "outfits" if you can even call it that, hahahaha. It's nice seeing art represented in fashion and these folks were not clownin' around with their steeze! This was an incredibly delightful way to spend a Sunday funday at the LA State Historic Park. We took public transit over (shout-out LA Metro) and were able to catch the second half of the event. During that 2.5 hour window, we covered a pretty substantial amount of activities such as watching a Cirque School show, watching a Bob Baker Marionette Theater show, visiting various vendor booths, eating a picnic lunch, and watching as madness unfolded while the annual traditional pie fight erupted to close out the day's festivities! The free marionette show was probably the biggest highlight for my Bob Baker Day! There is something about watching puppetry and performers in an open air park that makes you feel like you stumbled into a fever dream. I even saw a few flower puppets that reminded me of the talking flowers from the garden in Alice in Wonderland! I feel like I went into this event expecting it to be an actual carnival with rides, cotton candy, and all the works, but it was actually more of a chill and family-friendly educational event. The main feedback I have is probably around event accessibility. I'm not really sure why the event was hosted so deep inside of the park versus closer to the entrance. We legit had to walk pretty far to get to the actual set-up and I feel like that would fatigue a lot of attendees, not even just the elderly guests. It was also pretty windy and dusty still, so I wish I knew to pack a scarf or bandana to protect myself from the debris being kicked up in the park. The majority of hydration stations also ran out of water well before the halfway point of the event, so that wasn't too great. Despite this, I still had a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to checking out next year's event and hopefully being able to join for a larger chunk of the festivities in the future!

Honestly, the others will have trouble measuring up to Antaeus Theater Company. Every actor had dug deep into their character and delivered a brilliant performance. The director obviously had a clear vision for what she wanted and delivered. The double-casting of major roles seemed a little "stunt"y at first, but the actors provided nuanced performances in each role. One actress did five different characters and each felt like a new person onstage -- and incredibly, she's cast as the demanding lead role on other nights. Beyond that, it was a great pleasure just browsing in the library before the show. These people love theater, and it shows in every way.

We tried to show them our…read moretickets before walking into the theater and they didn't check anything; just told us to walk in. We found our seats on the far end of the theater. Then the lady from the front came to ask me to move in case one of my younger one needed to get up during the show. Fine, but I wish she would have thought of that before I sat down, maybe when she saw me walk in with a young child and decided not to look at my ticket. So I settle down in a seat next to the exit. Two minutes go by and another lady shows up. Does not introduce herself at all. She tells me that there is a loud noise at the end of the show and she is afraid it will startle my child and he will end up ruining the show for everyone. (WOW). She rushes through something about exchanging tickets for another night. Lady, I was so relieved to finally be sitting down and now you're kicking me out? I should have asked if there was an age limit for the show or an age limit for the theater. She should have asked me if I thought my child was mature enough to handle a loud noise. But no, I left embarrassed and furious. And she gave the impression that they don't want young people in the theater. Great. Oh and when my husband was exchanging the tickets she said they're for a night when your kids can stay home. Fantastic. Afterwards, I looked it up. It says right on the website that it's recommended for 15 years and older. We didn't catch that recommendation prior to making plans, my apologies. It would have been lovely to be kindly and compassionately addressed before we walked back and forth in front of everyone and got removed from the theater, in front of everyone especially with such an elitist and hurtful attitude.

While I wasn't able to see their first season/start with a production of Hair in Summer of 2022, I have instantly become a fan during this 2023 kick-off with a brilliant performance of Cabaret. From start to finish the lighting, sound, quality, directing and amazing cast and equally amazing live band (to back them up the entire show as well as entertain the audience with their skill) was one show I shan't forget. Cruz St James regaling us all with a beautiful opening number and leading great numbers such as Two Ladies, Money and If You Could See Her really elevates the word outstanding. Emily Lopez as thee Sally Bowles was terrific and her performance of the ballad of all ballads was moving very unique. Michael Thomas Grant as Clifford Bradshaw, fun, and quirky. Ursula Gueringer (Fraulein Schneider) and Craig Wright (Heir Schultz) really moved me. The Kit Kat Gals and Guys were all great especially my friend who turned me onto this show Avery Bass who sailored, kicked, flipped, moved, and often had some great one-liners. It was really cool to see the entire cast moving set pieces in and out and working together in sync not just like performers, but like a family. Absolutely hope to support more productions down the line and make the journey to their mainstage at the local Altadena Amphitheater. Q Tip: They do offer concessions and it's reasonable-ish, $40 for a bottle of wine, $10 for a glass, $5 for most snacks and other refreshments. They also seem to be great at getting local vendors to pair up with them but it's TBD show to show. Outside food is permitted and non-alcoholic beverages.
