Side fence
Oscar L.

Our backyard fences were blown down by the storms. I reached out to a number of fence contractors but chose Patrick because he responded quickly and after seeing the situation provided a detailed written estimate the next day which only one other contractor did. Patrick was very good at communication, showed up when he said he would and did a great job. I highly recommend him.

Backyard Fence at left side

Patrick provided a quote for a new 3-sided wood fence on top of a retaining wall in the back of my property to replace a cinderblock retaining wall that was leaning into my neighbor's yard, along with a rusting cyclone fence. I couldn't recommend Patrick and his Team any stronger as they did great work and Patrick's quote was lower than 5 other fencing companies!!! The new back 2"x12"x3' retaining wall and 3-sided fence looks fantastic! Next he will be replacing all 3 fences at the top sides of my property!!! I couldn't be happier and can't wait for the final finished product!!!!! Thanks Patrick!!!!!

Replacement fence, including retaining boards at base

A shared fence with our neighbor has been wobbly for years, and finally fell down in the winter storms. Patrick and his team replaced the fence, including patching a concrete wall and putting in new retaining boards along the base. The new fence looks great and is very sturdy, which gives us peace of mind given that there's an 8 foot drop from our yard to the neighbor's yard. Patrick was very responsive and professional, did quick work (all of the work was done in two half days), and charged a reasonable rate. Would definitely recommend him for fence repair or replacement.

SF Sunset side deck off the kitchen by P Langan. An outside view.

Sunset SF side deck off the kitchen is now a light-filled, structurally solid, beautiful place to be. Non-attached sunset homes sometimes lack privacy if windows are across from each other. You can see in the pictures that the design of the deck has solid wood on the top sides, open spacing underneath, and wire to give the small space an open, bright, yet private space for us and our neighbors. Patrick and Alex are kind, professional, and a joy to work with.

Patrick and his team planned things out really well and I needed to spent only a small amount of time to explain what I wanted. The quality, communication, timeliness are all super positive. He also happened to be the person who did the fence for our neighbor as well. We are very happy with their work. We did the painting ourselves since we have three generations of boys sitting at home during Covid time. :D

They worked with me on figuring out how to hide a sump pump pipe and navigating through our neighbor's concerns. The build quality is very nice and the crew was great about making adjustments for issues we discovered during the build. They even made the back of the fence look nice for our neighbor by covering the sump pipe. Communication with Wilson and his onsite crew was great. They also did a very good job cleaning up. They didn't have the cheapest quote but I felt this is one of those kind of things where you get what you pay for. For something we see every day I wanted it to be right. Great job A1!

Homeowner experience I hired A-1 Fence to replace an aging fence at my house, and the difference is night and day. Matt took the time to walk the property with me, explain options, and give a clear, detailed estimate with no surprises. The crew showed up exactly when they said they would, worked efficiently, and left my yard cleaner than they found it. The new fence looks fantastic, feels solid, and has already gotten compliments from neighbors. Work on my mom's house After seeing the quality of their work at my place, I had A-1 Fence come out to my mom's house for a much-needed fence and gate upgrade. Matt was incredibly patient with her questions, never rushed her, and helped her choose something safe, secure, and attractive. His team treated her property with real respect, checked in with her at every key step, and made sure she was comfortable with the plan and timeline. Knowing my mom now has a sturdy, professionally installed fence gives our family real peace of mind. Matt and his team Matt is the kind of owner you want on any project: responsive, honest, and deeply knowledgeable about fencing and gates. He returned calls and emails quickly, kept us updated on scheduling, and personally checked the work when it was done. His foreman and crew clearly take pride in their craftsmanship--every line is straight, the posts are set perfectly, and the finish work is meticulous. You can tell this is a long-standing, family-run business that cares more about doing it right than just getting it done fast. Why I'd recommend them Between my home and my mom's, we got consistent, top-tier service, fair pricing, and beautiful results from A-1 Fence. They handled everything--from removal of the old fence to the final cleanup--with professionalism and courtesy. If you're in the Bay Area and need any kind of residential fencing, I would not waste time shopping around; call Matt at A-1 Fence and you'll be in excellent hands.

It's everything around that which was challenging. When they originally came to scope the project out we explicitly talked about some extra things - but then at the end of the job they said they actually weren't in scope and wanted me to pay extra. Then, when I held back on paying the final bill until that was resolved, they unwarned put a mechanic's lien on our house. Also I'm nervous about their billing setup generally - it got hacked last year and I almost got scammed out of $11k. And during the job itself, they had to take the crew off of our job for an "emergency" somewhere else, leaving a big gap where there wasn't any progress while we had an active construction site at our house. I understand some level of scheduling issues but this was really frustrating. So overall, I'd say all of this put a really bad taste in my mouth, and I'd be really torn on whether to work with them again. The work was tremendous but I can live without surprise interruptions and liens on my house.

This was not my first time working with Leo and his team -- I've partnered with them several times over the past ten years at different properties, and they continue to exceed my expectations. Leo promptly returned my initial call and scheduled a site visit within just a few days. Shortly after, he provided a detailed quote, and we arranged the project timeline around his understandably busy schedule. When rain interfered with our original installation date, Leo was quick to coordinate a new date as soon as the weather cooperated. On installation day, Leo and his crew arrived on time and fully prepared. The team was outstanding -- communicative, professional, and respectful of the property throughout the entire process. At the end of each workday, the site was left clean and tidy. The project took nearly three days to complete, and I couldn't be happier with the final result. It was truly a pleasure working with Leo and his team once again. I would not hesitate to contact HH Fence and Deck Company for future projects and confidently recommend them to anyone seeking quality craftsmanship and dependable service.

[The following was edited to provide a play by play to show I acted in good faith and communicated my concerns _several times_ before giving up.] We scheduled work to start on a Friday. The job was for a straight railing of about 11 ft to replace our old railing that was rotted out. I asked that the new railing be installed into studs, because the previous railing mounts were loose and I didn't want the same thing to happen with the new railing. The contractors didn't show up until 4:30PM that day. I helped them plug in the welder and they got to work removing the old railing and then installing the new. Several times the welder blew our fuse so I reset it. The crew left that night without a word. The next day I went to check out the work. The new railing was installed in the same place as the old, not in studs, was rounded around the corner and covering our mailbox, and had been spray painted in place, getting black paint all over our beige exterior walls. Needless to say I was extremely surprised at the job and what had been done. It was almost comically bad. Just see the attached picture. I called Roman to voice my frustration. I mentioned I was unhappy with the obvious things but also that the railing had not been secured (a few tugs on the railing would likely pull it out) and that the end of the pipe (because that was what was installed as a railing, plumbing pipe) was not sealed, leaving an unfinished, unprofessional look. He agreed to come back, remove the curved railing blocking my mail slot, paint the wall, and that he would address my concerns. Again, the crew came by late in the day (sensing a trend here, I think they were maybe overbooked and coming from another job, but I speculate...). The wall was painted and the curved piece was cut. That was it. The welds were obvious, seams were visible where returns had been installed, the spray paint was already chipping. I called Roman. I made very clear my frustration with the apparent lack of quality, that it seemed there was a focus on getting things done quickly rather than well, and that my concerns and requests weren't being addressed. He said he would come back and address my concerns. I sent a text also describing these concerns. He cancelled the next scheduled visit. He called a while later but at this point I had moved on and wasn't willing to engage further. I had only agreed to pay half of the job up front, so I wanted to cut my losses and move on. This was supposed to be what I thought would be a simple steel railing installation. It turned out to be quite the opposite. On the plus side, I only agreed to pay half up front. So there's that.

And look -- that could have gone sideways real fast. Like, real fast. It didn't. Thank God. Here's the thing about this crew -- and I mean every single person who showed up -- they were just genuinely friendly. Not "we want your money" friendly. Actually friendly. The kind where you don't mind them being at your house for weeks. And on top of being friendly, they actually knew what they were talking about. I asked a lot of questions. Probably too many. Nobody fumbled. Nobody gave me the blank stare. Nobody redirected me to someone else. Just straight, confident answers from people who clearly know their craft. That goes for the construction crew, the painters, and the membrane repair team. All of them. Damn consistent across the board. Now -- I'll be real with you. Their quote came in a little higher than some of the other estimates we were getting. And yeah, I side-eyed it a little at first. But here's the thing -- the other quotes were coming from general contractors. And with something like this, I didn't want a generalist. I wanted a team that actually specializes in this kind of work. And that's exactly what I got. So honestly, the higher quote made complete sense once I thought about it. You're not paying more for the same thing -- you're paying for people who actually know what the hell they're doing at a deeper level than your average contractor. And as the project grew from a partial repair into a full deck reconstruction -- which, by the way, nobody saw coming -- the cost didn't blow up the way you'd expect it to. It stayed fair. It stayed honest. Nobody tried to squeeze extra money out of a situation that was growing by the week. When you zoom out and look at the whole picture, it's a no-brainer. You get what you pay for. And I couldn't be happier. Sammy and John were on it the whole time. Responsive, communicative, never left me hanging. And even after the project wrapped up and I came back with follow-up questions -- because I definitely did -- they were still right there. Patient, thorough, zero attitude. I had a lot of anxiety going into something this big, and somehow between Sammy's leadership and John keeping everything moving in the right direction, that anxiety just kind of... dissolved. Which, if you know me, is not easy to do. These guys just get it. Oh, and they cleaned up after themselves. Every single damn day. No nails. No debris. No "that's not my problem" energy. They treated my home like it was their own. Like, genuinely. I didn't have to ask once. Special shoutout to Sammy for always being reachable, to John for keeping the whole operation from going off the rails, and to Fernando, Armando, and Salvadore for their hard work and dedication on the ground -- these guys showed up every day and just handled their business. And honestly, the entire construction crew, the painters, and the membrane repair team deserve a shoutout too. Every single one of them showed up like it mattered. Because it did. These are good people doing great work and it shows. Most importantly -- I finally feel safe enjoying the outside of my home again. And honestly? That's everything.
