Ocean Ecoventures Whale Watching - Male Orca

My mind is still reeling from all that we saw. We followed a gathering of 19 orcas for more than an hour. Exceeded every bucket list dream I ever had, for seeing these animals! Simon is very, very knowledgeable; he also collects data for Canada Fisheries, so he knew the pods and individuals we were watching. And that wasn't all. We were guided to view a Humpback whale, 2 kinds of sea lion, seals, bald eagles, and even an island which had been stocked as an exotic game preserve, and still has wild animals from other parts of the world roaming around it. There were only 9 people, plus the skipper, so everybody had a great view of everything. And the boats are really fast, so they can go quite a distance in the search for those ever-moving orcas. An experience of a lifetime...even if (like me) you've taken many other whale-watching excursions.

Great for kids too. These boats are fast, you will see so much and cover incredible distances. Don't worry there is a WC on board for emergencies! Sign your paperwork, get your sunscreen on, and suit up in your warm floatation suit/life vest. Keep your phone handy as you will see all sorts of wildlife along the way, seals, eagles, eagle nests, then the killer whales. It's amazing how you can check the binder and identify each pod by name with their offspring. On our way back as we returned to dock we even had a bonus viewing of some whales right in Cowichan bay.

Eagle Eye Marine - A nice day fore a tow .

Nick offered to come right out to help, but we said we were fine for the evening. He and Celine came over early the next morning and he spent a while trying lots of things to get us going by our own power. We have a 30 year old boat with a labyrinthine electrical layout and he helped us understand some of our systems better. When he finally confirmed the problem was the starter he made arrangements with a marina in Sidney to tow us to and also called in a favor with a reputable, but busy, company to have someone come out the next day to replace the starter-- which they did! While Nick and Celine were helping us, they also assisted two other boats. After confirming we were safe, but before the actual tow, they needed to assist the coastguard with a boat that hit a rock and was sinking. Nick dove on the damaged boat and plugged the hole-- then helped them safely get to a marina. The other boat they assisted was mid-tow for us and the family broke down on the water nearby. They flagged down Eagle Eye, Nick got aboard and fixed their boat-- all while Celine continued to expertly tow our 40' sailboat! They then got us safely tied up in a slip in Sidney. So whatever your boat problems are on the water-- we can vouch for their skills and abilities! Plus, they are super nice people and make otherwise stressful situations much easier. We highly recommend Nick and Celine at Eagle Eye Marine!

Additionally, we had a conference rate that Tourism Victoria couldn't facilitate and they both made it a seamless experience for us. The tour itself was beyond our expectations. Captain Brad and naturalist Amy were both professional and excited for the experience, too. We were on the Salish Shadow, a smaller vessel with one other couple. The seas were a bit choppy and as we went further out, it became chillier which made us grateful that insulated flotation jackets were provided. I got soaked with one big splash, because although we were offered to sit inside, I wanted to feel the wind in my hair... and ended up feeling a whole lot more! It was quite funny and not wholly unexpected. We witnessed how their networking worked in terms of the companies all helping each other. We came across one humpback feeding, which I'm sure was shared to our captain and stayed to watch for a few minutes, but quickly left to look for a different site as he'd heard a rumour that another site was better. We went about as far as we could go, given the time limits and did indeed find a rather large baleen pod, which I understand is more unusual. We saw numerous flukes and tails and one curious young humpback 'mugged' us by approaching although we were outside the recommended distance. Captain Brad, shared this with the other companies and two other boats showed up in a bit, which really showed how they cooperate. On the return trip, we went past a lighthouse with sea lions and also encountered seals. Some non-wildlife sights included a US nuclear submarine with two escorts, a military helicopter, float planes, harbour patrol trying to keep vessels off the 'aquatic runway,' shipping vessels, sailboats, ferries and fishing vessels. And they offered us some hot chocolate near the end, which was a lovely gesture. I would highly recommend this company, because although they can't guarantee great weather and whales 'on demand,' they care.

We were surprised when we arrived at the boat, it was way smaller than we expected. When we booked the reservation I could've sworn the picture showed a much larger boat. With 11-12 passengers and 2 captains it felt extremely crammed. It was also rainy that day and not all of us could fit inside the tiny cabin with the captain, so about 4-5 people had to sit outside in the rain/wind. We did see 2 pods of orcas during the tour, and first group got really close to us and possibly swam under the boat which was really cool (we saw a female, calf, and large male orca up close). The second pod we saw from very far away and all we could really see were black dots (that I think were fins?) in the distance. We also saw porpoises and various types of sea birds. The captains were really knowledgeable and friendly, and we enjoyed the tour overall. However the fact that we had to sit uncomfortably shoulder-to-shoulder really detracted from the experience. I also feel they should give a warning about possible seasickness, as the waves could be rough the farther out you get.
