There must be a lot of book lovers living in Hove because whenever I visit any of the charity shops I'm amazed by the sheer diversity of the books donated. As well as umpteen copies of Harry Potter, there's always recent gems by award-winning authors like Sadie Jones and Kamila Shamsie.
This particular branch of Oxfam Books is a tiny store-front that's stocked with a real pick and mix of classic and contemporary fiction, biography, history and so on. They had three different Annie Proulx books when I visited earlier this week but alas, they'd been snapped up by the time I went back.
The lesson? If you see something you want and have to go to the cash-point, ask the staff to hold the books for you or hide them somewhere unsuspecting, like behind the Good Housekeeping manuals! read more
