The Lee County Courthouse has anchored Opelika's downtown since 1896, rising from a $35,000 bond…read moreissue that also funded a new jail, and replacing an earlier courthouse that stood just across the street. The building was designed by Atlanta architect Andrew J. Bryan, the red brick Classical Revival structure is compact but dignified, with a symmetrical facade, white trim, and a tall clock tower that still gives the square its visual center. The building's proportions are clean and balanced, the portico's columns framing an entrance that feels appropriately ceremonial without overwhelming the small downtown. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, it remains one of Opelika's most recognizable landmarks. Walking the block today, the courthouse still reads as the city's civic heart, its tower rising above the landscaping, fountains, and storefronts that have grown up around it. While secured on Saturday morning, the interior is apparently worth a tour if you can. Outside, there was a farmers market setting up on Saturday morning. Lots of vendors and looking interesting.
