Came to this place because of the high reviews and word of mouth. Found it to be a quaint little location. That was possibly the best part of my experience.. I found the menu extremely bland and lacking variety. Unable to mix meats together with avacados, or choose from more than a handful of entrees, I didn't feel like I was getting what I wanted. Once ordered, the food came out quickly. It wasn't anything special. The tacos are extremely tiny, just as a heads up! I moved to salt lake and I still drive 40 mins to dine at Oteo regularly. I live for the tacos ... hanger and chicken. I can't ever decide which is the best one and so I get both. WOW!! I can not say enough how delicious this food was. The owner was amazing. We got the royal treatment. We went in with our three children and we all loved it. We got to sample a little of everything. We started with quesadillas and Plantains. Yummy!! Then we got four different entree choices: Steak tacos, chicken tacos, avocado tacos, and chicken empanadas. The steak tacos have jalapeños on the top. I took those off and really liked them, but they were my husbands absolute favorite. He also really liked the avocado tacos. I loved the chicken tacos. Everything was delicious. At the end we had the cronuts, cinnamon sugar donuts with a custards center topped with sauce and a raspberry, those were the kids favorites. We will definitely be going back and be frequently visiting any location that opens up in Salt Lake. Definitely a must go to restaurant. read more

This is a great twist on Mexican, very fresh with a light citrus brightness in several dishes along with some unexpected garnish such as cabbage, radishes and apple. We tried the empanadas, Sopa, tacos and a yummy queso as an appetizer. Date night. Great, unique Mexican food. Somehow they take the ingredients that go into authentic Mexican cooking and go one better with each ingredient, making each creation the stuff of fancier fare found in upscale big city restaurants. Everything we tried was superb. Only reason I can't give it five stars is the prices. Having lived in border states, I'm used to much lower prices for fantastic Mexican food. I love Oteo's food, but today was the last straw. The service was slow and un-engaging. When I asked for ice with my water, the waitress said that the ice machine was broken. Then five minutes later I saw her bring out ice to another customer with a diet coke can. The atmosphere of the restaurant was anything but pleasant. Small, noisy, and loud. It took nearly 40 minutes just to get my tacos. I also ordered a cronut with my tacos and 20 minutes after eating my tacos the cronut did not come. I finally left without the cronut. The waitress followed me out the door and did not apologize for the dismal service or apologize for not bringing the cronut. I have spent thousands of dollars at Oteos, but no more will that happen. WAY, WAY OVERPRICED!!! Dinner for 4 people was $76!!! :-0 We ordered 2 appetizers, 1 apple salad, 3 sets of tacos, 1 moleto meal and only had water to drink. The woman who ordered the moleto meal was the one diner who left full. Two men in our party and one woman ordered the tacos. You can imagine our surprise when out came 2-4" street sized tacos per person. Two tacos amounted to about as much food as 1/3 of a Cafe Rio burrito. The men LEFT HUNGRY. If the cost of the meal had matched the amount of food brought out, this would've been a good place to eat. Sadly we left disgruntled (due to cost) and hungry (due to lack of food). read more

My wife and I tried this place out last week for dinner since there was a lot of good reviews. Arrived there early and there was no wait. At 530 the place wasn't even half full on a Friday. We ordered our food from a menu that is not very descriptive so I assumed the food was made up of normal Mexican food ingredients and seasonings. We received our food and it was not as expected. The tortilla was good, the beef was interesting but good, other than that I didn't really enjoy the other parts of the taco or the strange seasonings. Instead of lettuce they used a fruit, maybe apple shreds. Not sure. This food was advertised as Mexican but other than the names it is anything but Mexican food. Also, the silverware is terrible if you want to use them for eating. They are too long and the shape is weird. Maybe trying too hard to be quirky. If you are interested food that is different and creative you may like this just don't expect normal Mexican food. read more

I'm not sure what kind of restaurant this is. No chips and salsa, but you can order an appetizer that is tiny circles of doughy tortilla where they let you add melted cheese to them. Ridiculous. Then, if you order the main meal of tacos, you get two tiny teeny eetzy tacos with like one bite of meat in each one...and that's it. No rice, beans, nothing. We ended up going to a Taco Bell afterwards. It's not that it tasted bad, but way overpriced for meals that look like half of an appetizer. A truly awful restaurant. The appetizer (queso) was a disgusting nightmare. It was literally a bowl with a big glob of melted shredded cheese that came with a nice thick layer of grease floating on the top of it and 2 thinly cut mystery vegetables that I think they use to try and cover the grease. It also came with a plate of greasy warmed tortillas that were all pasted together a 2 tiny forks. It was inedible. Queso is supposed to be a cheese sauce with some flavor, not a giant clump of melted mozerella. I could tell right off the bat that this was the start to a culinary disaster. We ordered all entrees to try them all. If you're looking for variety, this place doesn't have it. You can get 4 entrees, basically all tacos, and 3 starters. That's it. The "chef", or man who warms up the inedible mess that he creates (he doesn't deserve the title of chef) just filled our tacos, sope, etc with massive amounts of sea salt. Apparently their food is that bland that he needs to use a tablespoon of sea salt in each shell to kill the customer's taste buds. That was all I could taste. SALT SALT SALT. Every bite was salt. He obviously doesn't know what good flavor is. No semi decent cook in their right mind would put THAT much salt on any food. The fact that it was sea salt made it all the more strong and overpowering. Oteo, you are an epic fail. I honestly can't believe people have given you 5 stars. Fake reviews, maybe? The food is all SO extremely OVERPRICED and disgusting. We complained about the salted food, but got nothing more than an apology. No discount on our checks. Nothing. Pathetic. I wouldn't be surprised to see an out of business sign on your door very soon. If you read this review and still go there, I feel bad for you... Horrid restaurant, even more horrid food. My oh my!!! I have been to many restaurants in search of something, I couldn't quite put my finger on it till I ate here! This food was, putting it mildly, MIND-BLOWING! There is nothing else that comes close to the flavor, quality, combinations and service than this place! I have told numerous people about it, 40+, and they have all had the same reaction! You cannot go wrong here! The Hangar special is to die for, the pulled, grass fed pork us marinated in 9 different peppers, and the little things, like slivers of green apple on your grass fed flank steak or bison is though provoking and an exceptional experience for your taste buds! I was glad I was in the area to try Oteo, it is charming and we had some really nice service on our Cinco de Mayo visit. Taco wise- it is pretty comparable to Taqueria 27 in SLC, which is a good thing! I got their carnitas and steak tacos which were very good, but nothing I haven't seen before. Their Sopes were SO DELICIOUS THOUGH. I got the chicken on a whim (I usually don't order chicken because it tends to be dry and less flavorful,) but holy smokes, it was so good. I would definitely recommend their sopes and get them again and again. Their Queso Fundido was interesting. It is not at all like a typical queso you would get somewhere else- but I really liked it. It is not runny- it is just like melted cheese and I believe they put plantains in it which was odd but I ended up loving it in contrast with the jalapenos. Super interesting flavors. Also, they don't serve it with chips, but with slightly warmed and seasoned corn tortillas. It was actually a nice change, just not the easiest thing to eat. Their cronut did not blow me away- but it was free with my first check-in on yelp so I'm not complaining. I think it may have been old... it was kind of hard and crumbly, but it had nice flavor. Overall very good. I like seeing places like these pop up in Utah county to give people something other than cafe rio. I would come back to try brunch. read more

Loved this place. Found it through the YELP app. Limited menu. Perfection on food quality and presentation. This was not Taco Bell!! The restaurant is family owned and it shows. They were friendly and attentive. It was great to go to a place that is more concerned with quality rather than quantity. We did not leave feeling like we overindulged, just that our palates were lavishly treated. Tonight, I had the hangar steak taco and the vegetarian taco (vegetarian food is not normally this good).
