Came here on a New Yorker's recommendation and it did not miss! I pre-ordered the New York Breakfast bagel (~$14) on an everything bagel and dill cream cheese, lox, onion, and lemon zest on recommendation as the line can be long some mornings and I wanted a tried and true bagel place. I showed up right on my due date time and followed their pick up order instructions and I still waiting 10 minutes to be helped? There were around 4 people in line at the time to order and they were being helped faster than me. I almost just jumped into that line since I wasn't even acknowledged by anyone for that long and the place is pretty small. Some workers came from the back and got me my order quickly from their pre-order shelf afterwards. There isn't indoor or outdoor seating, but central park is a few short blocks away. The bagel was YUMMY. The lemon zest adds a nice flavor along with the lox and the bagel was crisp on the outside and had a nice chew! This is our friend's bagel place, so naturally we had to come here to get some bagels. Absolutely freaking delicious. The first time we were here, it was a weekend so it was packed! They seemed to have a rhythm going though, so we got our bagels pretty fast. Had to wait a while for my friend's drink though. Decided that we had to come back before flying back out so that we can get some goodies to take home. Two words: olive sticks! Stopped by for a donut craving and left with a vanilla glaze donut and olive stick. I will absolutely be back but for olive sticks and to try their other breads. You haven't had as soft and complex but simple of bread flavor until you've tried this one. The crazy thing is, I don't even care for green olives, but this bread is on another level. Orwashers is an amazing bakery. We tried their salmon & dill cream cheese breakfast sandwich, chocolate almond croissant, multigrain bread, seeded rye bread, mini black & whites, and all three flavors of rugelach. Everything was very good, and the only thing that I thought was priced a bit high for what it was was the small boxes of rugelach that were over $12. Then again it's quality ingredients and there is a bit of effort that goes into making it so I'm honestly still going to come back and buy them ‍ And there's also a million other things i saw that I wanted to get but...til next time. The one annoying thing was that i did have to remind the cashier that I was still missing items from my order, but i did order a lot and it was early in the day. Was walking home from lunch with my grandfather and wanted to pick up a sweet so when I saw all the yummy things in the window I decided to stop in. There was a small line and slow service but I was in no rush so I didn't mind, but something to keep in mind. I got a morning bun and a raspberry donut. The morning bun is definitely better super flaky, crunchy with a sweet cream center. All in all nothing super special about the place. Decor is subpar and the ambiance feels far more hectic then necessary. But with all of that being said I will definitely will be back for a morning bun and to try some coffee. read more

I have made Orwasher's a staple part of my grocery shopping routines and artisanal carb craving needs. It is a small shop with a lot of high quality baked goods to offer from bread loaves, bagels, and pastries galore. Orwasher's takes care to source their raw ingredients/materials from local and regional NY producers and as a conscious consumer I love to support businesses like this. What initially caught my attention to Orwasher's was their wine/alcohol leavened loaves, which have a deep depth flavor, more so than your standard sour dough loaf. My favorites are the Cabernet Rustica and the Chardonnay Miche for their nutty, bright, and pleasantly sour notes. As far as the classics go, you still can't go wrong at Orwasher's as I have had their classic sourdough, ciabatta, and pumpernickel which are all fantastic. Orwasher's also serves a severely underrated salmon and lox bagel sandwich. This place should definitely be higher on NYC's top bagel lists. They offer pre-slicing for your loaves at check out which is very convenient if you are freezing your bread in the case that you do not eat it all right away. There is still a lot for me to try here and I always look forward to coming back. No seating, this is a grab and go type place. read more

Sadly I just didn't get the hype. Stopped by on a weekday morning and the line was out the door. I was first in line to step inside and it took probably 15 minutes to go in and 10 minutes to order, all felt extremely inefficient as I paid before I ordered and I found myself then repeating my order numerous times. I ordered the NY breakfast sandwich (everything bagel, lox, dill cream cheese, onion, lemon, chives) and sugar donut with strawberry jelly, as well as an iced coffee. The coffee was actually surprisingly delicious, but the donut I thought was pretty run-of-the-mill. To make matters worse, I found the longest piece of hair in my sandwich that really grossed me out and ensured that I'll never return. Dang Orwasher's are killing it! I'm not usually big on sweet stuffs. I didn't even crave sweets when I walk in, but Orwasher's has been on my list for a while and I just feel like trying it. There was a small line but it moved fairly quickly. The shop was very clean, bright, and have a welcoming "good morning have a good day vibe" which is awesome. The staffs are really friendly too! I opted for the sticky bun babka because I have never had any babka before and since everyone on the internet raves about the jelly donut I decided to get one too. Man, I should have had the donut first instead of the babka; only because the babka was so INCREDIBLE, it should have been the final taste left in my mouth Don't get me wrong, the donut was great! Incredible fluffy, pillowy texture, light & airy but still has some weight to it so it's not just fluff of unsatisfactory air. And the donut was seriously loaded. To the brim. The staff recommended strawberry jam and I went with that one. And yes it did not disappoint at all. Got to shake some sugar off the donut though cause if not it might be too sweet for me but for ya'll sweet tooth, go ahead, devour it all. This does taste like some artisanal donut, not factory-made artificial tasting donut and jam BUT the Babka is the BOMB! I rated it a straight 10 out of 10 on my first bite! The texture was incredible, the pecan adds amazing boost both for taste and texture, the sweet glaze was perfect and I thought I didn't like sweet but this was just absolutely fine. Straight up fire. I enjoyed it all the way. Just incredible. It was a heck lot of sweet stuffs for me and since I'm not big on sweets I might not want to see anymore sugar for the next 2 weeks but if any definitely did not regret coming here. Plus, people might say it's a bit pricy but I think the quality lives up to the price. This Orwashers doesn't sync their online purchases with real time inventory in the store so if you order online for pickup you may find like I did that they are sold out of your order. Good for Orwashers that they have grown their business during the pandemic but in every single way, this business was better before the current owners came in a dozen years ago. Before it became hip enough for Leslie Jones to dance on the counter in an UES SNL skit, bread was baked on the premises, you were greeted by welcoming, competent and efficient clerks not 4-5 people standing around and a line backed up down the block for new orders and pick up orders. Orwashers is now available via every single online app but the customer service experience has gone downhill not to mention that prices go up roughly 4% every time I visit. There is no good time or off hours to visit this place. 45 minute wait for a bagel on a non holiday weekday or order online and you may get your intended order. read more

A true New York Treasure with I believe three locations - two in Manhattan and another in Brooklyn . Orwashers is truly a bread/ pastry lovers dream. A long Sunday morning walk in the city was rewarded with their delicious vanilla donut - so airy and fluffy and absolutely delicious and washed down with their freshly brewed lattes along with raspberry rugelache. To go I got the cinnamon raisin walnut bread and morning sticky buns , along with a sugar donut stuffed with their fresh raspberry jam. My only disappointment is that I did not hear of them earlier. Everything was amazing from their helpful and cheerful staff who were so patient with me when I Could not decide which of their amazing treats to get to the fact that they cut your loaves into slices for you in store . I am still swooning over their donuts and sticky buns . I can't wait to venture out again next Sunday for more treats. read more

We came in the afternoon and it wasn't that busy. I hear this place gets packed in the mornings since it is a neighborhood favorite. Unfortunately, I do not get what the hype is about. The chocolate chip cookie was cold and stale. This cookie wasn't in the same stratosphere as Levain or Chip City. The crumb bun and the ruggala were stale as well. Not sure if they make them in the morning and since they sit out all day they get hard. They shouldn't have been selling them like that. Idk but it was bad. Got a takeout order the other day - Matcha lavender latte: really good! Got a heavy hit of lavender on the first sip but afterwards felt much more balanced. Strawberry rhubarb jam filled donut: AMAZING. Seriously, get me more of that jam. Chocolate raspberry rose: really good! ROSLYN LOCATION:PREORDER & PREPAID NOT READY: A week ago , I made the trip there for 2 seeded ryes at 1pm on a Wednesday. I was told that they had no rye bread that day. No explanation why, not they ran out of it (Wednesday at 1pm?). Just we don't have any. today. I then preordered 2 rye breads and paid in full for the same pick up time the following week; yesterday. I arrived as planned and was told that no one pulled them to set aside for me and nothing was available. Not only was that irresponsible for a prepaid order, a weak "sorry about that" was insufficent. I should have been offered a free loaf of something else for my trouble and their inepptitude. I did receive a full refund. For the bread. Not my time that left me scrambling for a decent rye. It is delicious when it is there. With locations on both the Upper East and Upper West sides of Manhattan plus Brooklyn it was early Sunday morning that a stop was made at Orwasher's, their East 78th Street location opening early every day to serve its neighbors many of the same great recipes they've proudly been baking since 1916. Self-proclaimed New York's "Original Artisan Bakery," the Hungarian owners' descendents finally passing the torch to Keith Cohen in 2008, Orwashers now still looks much the same as it always has thanks to accurate restoration, though items have most certainly expanded to include more modern options in addition to Loaves fashioned from ancient Grains and Rye. Large enough for perhaps fifteen shoppers, though lacking seats and thus exclusively take-out only, it is from racks and shelves behind glass that guests are invited to peruse a variety of choices, regulars making the process seem effortless while first timers will likely take more time for fear of overlooking something delicious. Not style-specific, Croissants and Scones just a few feet from Cookies and Doughnuts, it was finding the former still oven-warm that tasting commenced, a baked layer of Frangipane thankfully not indicative of insides that are overly sweet but not wet while the $4 Doughnut stuffed with Raspberry Jam was well-raised and yeasty with plenty of housemade filling. Onward to Rainbow Cookies, presumably the same Jelly here dividing pale Almond Flour layers robed in Chocolate, it was at this point that Orwashers Black & White Cookie was tasked by a reputation of "Best in New York," the thick Sponge somewhere between Angelfood and Pound Cake while Icing was good, though personal preferences veer towards creamier Frosting. Wrapping up Chocolate, the Cocoa Old Fashioned not dried out like so many others and even a little tangy on the tongue, it was largely the name which commanded the order of Orwashers' "Chocolate Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookie" though it did indeed live up to such as a crisp edge and soft center were each found with more melted morsels than Flour, Sugar, Eggs or Butter. read more
