I've been waiting to give this a try, as the new torch bearers to the previous American Dream Pizza. I understand that nothing remains the same, but I'm sad to say that it's now worse. The cool delivery drivers that they used to employ have been replaced by Uber, so the pizza arrived pretty darn cold. But I popped it in the oven and got started on the Caesar. ADP used to have a pretty decent one, this one here was tiny and sprinkled with what looked like some imitation cheese dust. The lettuce was fresh though! The dressing on the side tasted like something that came out of a gallon jug. And now, the pizza! What I've been waiting over a year for! It looks the same, crust looks the same, but somehow now this is one big salt bomb. The crust texture was very similar, but not quite as flavorful as the original. And the way that the sauce used to go so well with the crust is not there either, because there is no sauce. A little, almost like an afterthought. Dry, salty, and reheated. Not how pizza should be. I totally get that starting a business is hard, especially when you're following in someone else's footsteps. But my overall takeaway here is that someone's more concerned with penciling everything out in the accounting books instead of making a product that people will actually buy, enjoy, and love. It just felt (and tasted) cheap. Get those delivery drivers back, take a look at those recipes again and don't cheap out on what's important. I wish you good luck. read more

This pizza is very different than what I am used to. For me the crust was absolutely perfect. It was actually crisp and crunchy not wet and chewy. Absolutely love the flavor. I could've went a little bigger on toppings, but it was good nonetheless. I'm going to have to come back and try some of the other toppings. I worked near the store and saw them papering the windows in preparation of doing the remodel and setting up the pizza parlor in 1983 the next time I drove by after the paper was down off the windows. I pulled over and went in in order to pizza. Best pizza I had had in Portland ever took my granddaughter in this afternoon for a pepperoni pizza and whatever they're doing, they need to keep doing it because it tasted just like the original pizza that the store made in 1983. I came here for Pizza Week two days ago, and their manager served me (and others) ICE-COLD pizza that had been sitting out for 45+ minutes. I just tried to call and complain, and the little girl at the cash register refused to give me her or the manager's name (only guilty people do that.) I am *extremely* immunocompromised, so eating a piece of pizza that had been *breathed* on by, I dunno, 50+ people is just unthinkable. This place needs to be shut down. read more

American Dream was my family's tradition growing up in Hollywood, and I'm so glad they have re-opened to keep this institution going for our community. The rat pack and salad was our go-to and we'd "fight" for every slice. Their dough is the star here, a great fermented flavor (good thing) as the crust is almost like an event in itself--like scaling a mountain of chewy awesome, then the bottom crust is cracker-thin with that crisp cornmeal or other as a barrier between it and the oven. Yum! Toppings are all top-notch. Tip, add fresh tomato to your pie, really makes it and cuts the richness. This will become 5 stars in no time, but they are still getting things together--so our pie was underdone, and I've heard from old neighbors that they've experienced the same and just popped it into their own oven for a few and it's back to its perfect self. I have been going to American Dream Pizza for 32 years and the last time was just shortly before it had shut down. The news articles explained what happened and said a new owner had purchased it and they were keeping the pizza the same but they couldn't call it the same so it is now called original dream pizza. So when I went there today I had the expectations of it being the way it used to be, light flakey, pockets of air, crispy crust. It was so delicious then. When I went in, I asked the gal if the dough was the same, she said yes, the sauce the same she said yes, cooked the same she said yes, the pepperoni the same and she said no that wasn't the same which I was OK with. When I got my pizza, it wasn't cooked real well. It was a really light blond crust and it was kind of doughy in the middle and very dense so I asked her to stick it back in and cook it longer, She said OK but made a new pizza instead which I appreciated. I saw several pizzas go out looking the same as mine. One piece of my pizza had no pepperoni on it, a couple other pieces had very few pieces of pepperoni on it and a couple of pieces had a lot of pepperoni on it with three or four stacked on top of each other. I was just really disappointed that it was nothing like American Dream Pizza. They have completely simplified the menu to 5 different choices and add on's with only Two salad choices. Not much at all with beer, wine or soda choices, nothing like it was before, so it should not be called original dream pizza insinuating It's anything like the one that was there before. It wasn't bad, It's just like other pizza, but I will not be driving across town for this pizza. The reason for two starts is because she said it was the same pizza. I hadn't been here for probably 30 years. When I came here with my bestie a few months ago it was like being transported back in time. Nothing seemed to have changed. Same charming wall decor and red seating. We ordered slices and cokes. When our slices were ready, they were just as big, just as delicious as I had remembered. I got a mushroom and olive slice. The sauce was thick and robust, the crust crispy with a hint of garlic salt. It's such a sad yet satisfying feeling when you get to the last bite. I was so tempted to get a slice to go but I'm on a diet and that was my cheat meal of the week and was so worth it. I hear they're going to sell. We (6) arrived around 6:30pm, and were told we would be the last table of the night. Thankfully, my family have been patrons for over 30 years, and it was a quick decision. Pepperoni and black olive. Mostly to see if the new Dream would still dump an entire can of olives on the pizza (they did!!!). Unfortunately, we were informed there were issues in the kitchen (dough machine was kaput) and the FOH brought out some complimentary 'apology' beers as they worked out the problem. When the situation seemed dire, the staff brought out their last slices (5) from the case, and some breadsticks, with big apologies. We snacked, and joked about heading to Big's, but eventually we were informed our pizza was in the oven! And let me just - not only compliment the staff for being so patient and kind - but also working through issues and delivering anyway! The pizza was bomb. Like, I'm a real old head, so I notice the changes in the sauce and dough, but they are so slight...I was super happy with my pizza that I thought id never have again and even in strange circumstances the staff really helped us have, a really cool experience again. read more

I thought I'd try the re-breed American Dream pizza. Unfortunately, they have much to improve. It's not the same pizza dough (actually it was pretty bad). They charged me for tomatoes and never put them on. They apparently prepared my pizza much earlier than they predicted because my pizza was barely warm when I arrived at the quoted time. There's no way to talk or text anyone to ask about getting refunded for my overcharge. I sure hope they work things out and can create a pizza such as it used to be! read more

This was a spot that a Portland native sent me to as one of her all-time favorites. I could see why. Appreciate the we're-only-hear-for-the-pizza vibe you get when you first walk in handpainted areas throughout the restaurant and boxes stacked to the ceiling. There are only a couple of tables so you might want to claim seats before lining up, if you plan to sit indoors; they go quick. I called in advance from the highway so that I could pick up a whole pizza and drive it up to Seattle. When I opened the box, the pizza looked so good: had to sit down and taste a slice while it was hot. The first thing I noticed was that the pizza was cut tavern style: into squares rather than like pieces of pie. And when I picked up a piece -- the crust was everything: dusted with cornmeal and thin with a nice crunch when you bite. I learned from a Chicago elder that this approach to pizza is what some call the true Chicago style pizza, before thick deep Dish came along and made a name for itself. This is my favorite pizza of all time in Portland, Oregon and also is for my best friend. We have been coming here since they opened. They have good days and really good days and not so good days but we still keep going back because the breadsticks and that garlic butter and their crust and the combination is the best of the best!!! We were really really really really really really bummed when we heard they were closing down and we're super excited that they're coming back! 2nd time I've been to Original Dream but used to get pizza from American Dream quite frequently. The crust was much better 2nd time. There are too many toppings on pizza and they need to be cut smaller. I ordered a large Santorini. Check in with someone who used to work at American Dream to get proportions right. My husband wanted pizza and we had heard of American Dream Pizza in Portland as we are super fans of ADP in Corvallis. I once asked if they were the same and they said no. But I'll tell you, when you walk in - the vibe, the look and even the pizza boxes were identical. Each of us ordered a slice and a salad, the lunch special for $8.00 - what a screaming deal (one topping on each so if you order another topping you're charged a little extra). Salads came out pretty quickly and it was simple but the best part is that it came with a huge ranch side! Other places have those small paper sides but this one was almost double the amount - score!! Next the pizza. The sauce was a little too thick, a little too much cheese and the crust just shy of being crisp enough. My son said there was too much pineapple on his slice. My husband said there wasn't enough pepperoni on his. Both my daughter and I had perfect proportions. The staff was pleasant and attentive. read more

Full agreement here with the other reviews that complain about the crust on American Dream's pizza. It's less a dough than it is a cracker. While some may love it, we found it thin, dry, and fairly tasteless. We opted for half pepperoni and half vegetarian special, opting for the curiously named Round-Up (artichoke hearts, black olives, feta cheese, mushrooms, and garlic). Minimal sauce and cheese on the pepperoni half. Heaps of veggies on the Round-Up half, enough that one guest used a fork. The wet ingredients made the crust on all but the side pieces soggy. I'm surprised by all the people who didn't like their pizza. I thought it was great! Maybe they have a problem with consistency. This was my first time after all. But the pizza I just ate...excellent! One minor nit...the corn meal they used on the crust was (almost) too much, meaning it was just about as much as I could handle before the crust turns "grainy". The toppings and doneness were A++! I'm also surprised by all the compliments on service because that wasn't my experience. While taking my order (by phone), I felt rushed. She didn't ask what size, she just assumed large and nearly hung up after giving me the price. I had to stop her to clarify I wanted a mini. Curbside when I called to let them know I was there to pick up, I was placed on hold then abruptly told she'd bring it out when it was ready. No time estimate. No pleasantries. Stopped by here recently when visiting someone in the nearby hospital. Was just hoping to grab a slice and drink for a quick lunch. When I asked what pizzas they had currently made to buy by the slice, I was shocked to hear that even their slices are made to order! So, we got a couple of slices based off their unique and robust menu and sat down to wait. Thought the slices were kindof expensive, but just figured that was because it was in Portland. When the slices arrived - they were massive! Each of us was only able to eat half, and took the rest home. In all this seems like a funky joint that serves a lot of food for a fine price. The pizza wasn't ridiculously special, which is why I just gave it 3-stars, but I certainly don't think it was a bad lunch in any regard. Give it a try, maybe you'll love it! read more

I suppose if this is the neighborhood pizza you grew up with or if you are a child, you probably think its great. The nicest thing I can say about the pizza we had is that it's "ok", a step up from frozen. We had the Dream Special, a combo of minced sausage (weirdly finely ground like taco meat), bacon mushrooms and olives with sliced anemic/pale out of season raw tomatoes on the top. Their crust is yeasty tasting and more like a bread than a pizza crust. It was thin-ish, but oddly layered and bubbly, with way too much rolled crust at the edge. If the crust was good that would be worth it, but the crust is not good. The sauce was dry. The toppings were mostly in the middle, leaving a lot of space at the edge with barely any toppings and then a wad of pleated rolled crust. The decor could use an update and a thorough cleaning.
