He said the museum displays will not be fully completed until next year. I am an artist so I appreciated all the artwork from the Oysterponds artist -William Steeple Davis. I also liked the personal relics from the descendants of the area - photographs, documents, jewelry, fishing relics from the 1800's. Beautiful grounds. We were there about an hour. There are no parking restrictions - park in the street. People don't realize what was here on Long Island before highways and big box stores. You need the past in order to have a future. Good for small school groups, small tour groups.

This camera obscura is one of only 50 in the entire world, only 5 of which are in the US. It was…read moreonly a dollar per person. We waited about ten minutes outside for the people before us to come out. It was a bit cloudy when we were there and I'd love to go back on a clear, sunny day. It was still a neat experience. The educator who showed us the camera obscura was fantastic. He had lived in Greenport for decades and gave us so much history and really fleshed out the experience. It was so much cooler seeing it and hearing stories about the area. This is well worth the $1 it will cost you and would be neat for kids as well. The sign said the it was open from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. this was on a weekday. I believe they are open weekends and weekdays in the summer and only weekends the rest of the year.

There are only 5 in the US and only about 50 in the world. Historically significant and only a…read moredollar to partake. That said, prepare for an experience that lasts only a few minutes and largely depends on a cloudless sky.

9/24/22: Visit! Village of Greenport is adorable!…read more Took the Shelter Island ferry over to the '22 Maritime Festival. We boarded a replica of the Amistad ship. A narrator gave us some of the ship's history. We walked around the festival. Everyone was in a good mood. Lots of cool kiosks with a variety of goods and "Cheer" were for sale. Purchased some lovely lavender from one of the kiosks. : D We stopped where ironworks were demonstrated and beautiful rustic ironwork crafts were sold. (Please check out my pics). Lots of cute shops, pubs and restaurants in the Village of Greenport! A carousel is in the port too! Definitely would return!

Sail your boat or take a yacht and explore Shelter Island and Sag Harbor nearby on the Peconic Bay. Best wineries and vineyards are here on the East End of New York. All very good. Enjoy!

This historical marker along SR 25 in Orient (also known as Main Road) points out the history of a…read morenearby structure. The marker is very faded and needs some TLC to bring it back to legibility. It reads, "Peaken's Taven. Built by John Peaken circa 1656. Later became the property of Thomas Terry II circa 1703 and ownership continued in the Terry family until 1850 when it was acquired by E. Mulford. Last of seven houses built in the mid-17th Century." Online, there is more information. "Terry-Mulford House is a historic home located at Orient in Suffolk County, New York. It was built in 1716, with later additions. A side wing was built about 1800 and third wing added in the early 20th century. Also on the property is a pyramidal-roofed well and small shed. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The sign is incorrect; it was never a tavern." Your choice to believe the sign or the wikipedia article. It is in very good condition with only a little bit of peeling paint around the edges. The marker reads, "According to local legend, Postmaster General Benjamin Franklin set milestones in 1755 that park the Post Road from here to Riverhead." And yes, Riverhead is 30 miles from here. The Pomeroy Foundation has more information. "The legend has its origins in a journal entry from a 19th century local historian named Augustus Griffin. A resident of Orient, NY in the 1850s, he recorded a local story that Benjamin Franklin visited North Fork in 1755 to take a ferry to New London for the purpose of visiting his mother. Supposedly, on the way he used a special odometer to measure the road to Southold where he stayed at the inn of Augustus Griffin's grandfather before travelling on towards New London. Interestingly, no mention of road markers or Benjamin Franklin's role as joint postmaster for the British Crown were mentioned. This became the basis of the idea that Benjamin Franklin himself not only measured the road but installed the mile markers." The website does a fact check that basically prove that there's no way Ben Franklin did it but does provide the actual origin of "the only complete set of mile stones in the northeast, making them historic in their own right." Opened to the public in 1920 and made a National Natural Landmark in 1980. Orient Beach State Park…read moreis just a beautiful example of a natural beach environment. Orient beach offers a gorgeous environment for passive recreation as well as a paradise for beach goers. There is a 2.1 mile bike path along the park road which stretches along the section of the park called long beach. This road is also the entrance and exit to the park which is situated at the end of this stretch of road. Being part of the bike path it provides for an incredible walk with views of Gardiner's bay on one side and marsh lands on the other. There are many species of Birds and other wildlife life within the park and an amazing and unusual red cedar forest which encompasses the picnic area. Hobbies here include swimming , paddle boarding, kayaking, fishing and a playground for the kiddies . Facilities here are very nice and clean, including a bath room and showers for when you get off the beach. Truly an incredible place to visit at least once in your life, its natural beauty is impressive.

Nearly all of the park is dirty and rock road, not very smooth. Signs are posted that a park decal is required but I decided that was a rule I could bend since I wasn't sticking around. Down the road and out to the end, I found a nice parking area (not smooth and ouchies on my car). Despite the chill and the howling wind, I was able to get quite close to the lighthouse and enjoy the view of Plum Gut. This is the very tip of the northern fork at the very end of Long Island. There are no amenities here. It's a beach park without toilets or shelters. Probably great for fishing. On a warmer and sunnier and less rainy day, this would be a fabulous park.
