Currently the exhibit upstairs is all about textiles, but I heard they change it regularly. There was a hands-on room and a bedroom set with an original handmade quilt that looks like it was made by a machine. You can tell a lot of love and pride goes into the museum from the friendly faces to the informative collections and exhibits. Definitely a must see spot for any visitors!

The North House Museum is one of those small, out of the way sites that are worth exploring…read more Operated as part of the Greenbrier Historical Society, it contains many examples of early Virginia furnishings. Yes, you read that right my friends. Don't forget, West Virginia was a part of Virginia until 1863. The North House has six rooms open to the public. My husband Rick and I took the free (although a donation is suggested) guided tour. Being a history teacher, Rick liked the Civil War Room the best. I preferred the Doris Caldwell room. Caldwell was a diorama artist whose pieces were very intricately detailed. Come check this place out if you're on a WV vacation.

We spent the day in Lewisburg and this museum became the highlight of our trip. We took the guided…read moretour and thoroughly loved it. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. The other staff we encountered were very helpful. The displays were of the highest quality and full of interesting information about the several eras of Lewisburg and Greenbriar County. Another big plus was the handicap access. We were able to take a wheelchair throughout the museum. This museum put a smile on our faces.

Sharing a small island with a Confederate memorial, this marker points out the earliest history of…read morethis small town. The marker has the different text on each side. On the front, it reads, "Site of Fort Savannah, built in 1755. Here at Camp Union Gen. Andrew Lewis mustered troops which participated in the Battle of Point Pleasant 1774. Lewisburg was incorporated in October, 1782, by the Virginia Assembly." On the reverse, "Presbyterian Church established 1783. Stone building erected, 1796, still used for worship. Lewisburg Academy founded, 1812, was precursor of Greenbrier Military School and of Greenbrier College. Library-Museum built, 1834." There is a margin on the side of the road if you'd like to stop to read the marker. It reads, "First established at Lewisburg 1808-09 by Dr. John McElhenney and chartered as an academy in 1812. Used as barracks and hospital during War between the States. Present buildings on north side of town built 1921." The marker does not indicate a sponsor or the date it was erected. West Virginia was formed as part of Virginia and so it is the only state that declared its independence from the Confederacy. This marker points out a battle that took place here. It reads, "Confederate troops under Gen. Henry Heth here, May 23, 1862, were repulsed in attach upon division of Col. Geo. Crook's brigade. The Old Stone Church was used as a hospital. In his retreat, Heth burned bridge over Greenbrier at Caldwell." There is no indication of what organization sponsored the marker or when it was erected. This two-sided marker is aligned on a small circle off US-60 to the north of downtown Lewisburg. It…read morerecalls the time the Civil War passed through the city. On the front, "The Greenbrier area was predominately Southern in its sympathies, and furnished some 3000 men for the army of the Confederacy. It was occupied repeatedly by one or the other of the opposing armies throughout the War." And on the reverse, "On the hill, 400 yards west, in a common grave shaped like a cross, lie unclaimed bodies of ninety-five Confederate soldiers, casualties of the area, including those of the Battle of Droop Mountain and the Battle of Lewisburg." West Virginia was formed as part of the Commonwealth of Virginia prior during the Civil War era and…read moreit was the only state to secede from the Confederacy. As a border state, there were a large number of battles and skirmishes that took place here. And it would seem that there were some in West Virginia that fought for the confederacy. There is also a large Confederate cemetery in town. The United Daughters of the Confederacy dedicated this monument in 1906 to Greenbrier County's Confederate dead. Originally located on the grounds of former Greenbrier College, the rerouting of Route 60 necessitated the relocation of the monument to its present location. In 2020, there were calls for the monument's removal or relocation to the nearby Confederate cemetery, but the city government ultimately decided against removal, promising instead to incorporate new interpretive signs around the monument. It is similar to others, with a Confederate soldier depicted at the top leaning on his rifle. The marker has the same text on both sides, reading "On the evening of May 1, 1863, Lt. Col. George Edgar moved to block Union troops marching to Lewisburg. Establishing lines at Tuckwiller's Hill, Edgar caught the enemy by surprise under cover of darkness early on the 2nd, and reportedly feigned orders to imaginary troops to conceal his inferior numbers. After a skirmish of 15-20 minutes, Union forces withdrew in retreat." There is plenty of space to stop and read the marker. [Review 20325 overall - 103 in West Virginia - 1303 of 2023.]

On the hillside north of Lewisburg, this marker stands at a small traffic pull-out that has a…read morelovely view of the valley. The context of the marker and it's location make absolutely no sense. There is a second marker in the same spot. The marker has the same text on both sides. It reads, "The wartime division of WV lasted into the years just after the Civil War. To protect the new state and political party power, leaders used test oaths to keep ex-Confederates from voting and to limit their role in government. Joseph "Old Scratch" Caldwell struck so many names from Greenbrier County voter rolls that only three men voted in Lewisburg Township in the fall of 1867."
