Shopping around for a new laptop is a thankless task if you don't know much about computers…read more Unfortunately I'm fairly cynical and think that every Sales person is trying to sell me the item that he/she wants to get rid of the most and not what's actually best for me. So, after trying two or 3 places and having almost made up my mind I was persuaded to go to JB Hi Fi by a friend who insisted that they 'really know their stuff'. I wasn't buying it and when the assistant told me that the model I had in mind (which I had seen at another store) was 'junk' my bulls*$t detector went onto high alert. However, over the next 30 minutes or so this guy proceeded to convince me that I needed to buy another machine and by the time I handed over my money I was convinced that I was getting a great deal. He knew his stuff, was persuasive but not too over bearing and most importantly, I believed him. I may be wrong, but its my impression that they hire very good staff to work the floor. That they have a wide range of products at excellent prices doesn't hurt either.

Maybe they're all pissed-off because with a name like "JB Hi-Fi" there's not a single piece of "Hi-Fi" but plenty of overpriced "Lo-Fi" ? Who knows... If you're " technical enough " to tell the difference between a mouse & a keyboard, you won't be illuminated nor impressed by the dross that they stock.... If you're a masochist & enjoy being offended & lied to by a bunch of kids who would rather be elsewhere & can't be bothered, you've found your House of Pain. To an "old" Technologist like me, who's been around, from, chip level repairs through to consulting & corporate IT strategy for big financial - this place sucks on so many levels, that I hope it goes the way of "Dick Smith" & disappears from the face of the earth here's a brief summary of my most bizarre retail experience ever: I walked-in hoping to pickup a cheap tablet, to connect as a display to a raspberry Pi media center. After being ignored for several minutes, by a staff member fumbling his thumbs some 3m away from me, I walked-up to him & asked him "do you work here? " to which he replied "Yes" I said to him, "I'm sorry to bother you, but none of the tablets are connected to the internet & had they been connected, I wouldn't have to bother you, I have been here on a number of occasions in the last 6 months & the demo are has always been stuffed-up" The young geeza immediately arked-up & started accusing me of swearing at him, and that I should speak to the manager if I have a problem. I replied " had the equipment been connected & working, I would have no need for assistance & yes I'ed like to speak to the manager" I was introduced to the "manager" & proceeded to explain my dilemma of disconnected equipment, whilst the staff member was next to him & proceeded to "pull" funny faces at me Bart Simpson style - the "manager" must have noticed my look of bewilderment & told the staff member "that's enough you can go now" The "manager" initially told me that "none of the tablets have ever been connected to the net & asked why I needed to go on the net" I said " look it's pretty obvious that it's not possible to asses the performance of the equipment without being able to do so - different processors, different memory bandwidth, graphics controllers etc - I'ed like to test the look & feel, comparing benchmarks is not relevant to a subjective assessment" The "manager" now told me, that "if you're interested in buying something, I can login & you can go on the net" ( Wow I though, he just told me 3min ago that the gear was " never ever " connected to the net & all of a sudden it is - so he's just been lying to me ) As we were approaching the tablet are, I reiterated the dysfunctional state of the demo area & said that if his staff have issues with basic customer service, maybe they should be relegated to other, less customer facing duties? By now, the "manager" was sweating profusely & said that he's never had complaints about the staff member in question - I said " look if the equipment was set-up for demonstration, I wouldn't have the need to bother anyone, I could asses without anyone's help" By now I must have raised too many poignant concerns & the "manager" unable to address them, said " look can you just leave ? " As it was nearing closing time & I could see that I was getting no-where in this cesspit, I simply left the place without saying anything else. I reported the bizarre staff behaviour to JB HIFI, via the only means available - an online "customer feedback form" AND predictably there's been no response.
