Braemar College - Building Braemar College

Braemar College is an international high school located at 229 College Street: Toronto's downtown…read morehub. The location is perfect as there are many places to connect within the city. Prominent sites like the University of Toronto (St. George Campus), CF Eaton Centre, Financial District, Chinatown are within the College streets. The building consists of 5 floors: Toose art store (1st floor), UofT Student Services (2nd floor), Braemar College (3rd to 5th). My decision to transfer from a public Canadian secondary school to Braemar was a game-changer. The College does as much as it can to support you and make sure that you succeed in the short and long term. Both principals, Mrs. Lemieux and Ms. Schumacher are some of the kindest, warmest, inspirational leaders I've ever met. They always helped me strive my best through my academic growth, and I'm grateful that the College has such an inspiring administration. Educationally, the College offers the proper grounds for an ideal academic growth (mainly in social and geographic sciences). Unlike other institutions, the College follows a four-term system (five for summer school). Each term consists of 2 months and a half, and alumni can take up to 3 courses per day. Each class lasts around 3 hours as it is designed as a core course. I strongly advise any student looking to enroll at the College to get further information regarding the available courses, teachers available per field, teachers ratings from students, and the average number of students per the desired course (specifically Biology, Chemistry, Physics). Further, make sure that the courses you are enrolling in are available in the selected term. I had the honour to have met some of the most inspiring instructors from all around the globe. They will always look for your wellbeing and help you to achieve your needs. Regarding facilities, the College does not count with a physical science laboratory but a digital lab for STEM courses. The school does not have a gymnasium. Instead, students will go to Kensington Community School Jr. to use the sports court. Clubs and student organizations occasionally shift within terms (make sure to contact the Activities Director and lead groups for further details). There is no specific place to eat as the College does not have a cafeteria, and the rooms serve as classrooms, IT rooms, and performing arts rooms. Luckily, there is a wide range of local and international restaurants and cafés. Regarding housing, the College does not count with private dorms. Instead, there's a privately-owned residence called Campus One, which many alumni commonly rely on. If you would like to live with a local family (commonly referred to as homestay), please be aware that most of them are situated within a 25km-35km radius from the College (typically in North York, Scarborough, Toronto West End). I would recommend living in the downtown core as it is more comfortable and accessible to commute within the College and the city. In my experience, Braemar College offers excellent opportunities and connections globally, and it will depend on you on how to use most of your time. Take advantage of the great options, learning experiences (in and out of the College) to enrich your desired goals and experience a globally connected city. The choice is yours to make

I did grade 12th in Braemar College and I found it really special. I had friends around the world…read more The teachers were really nice, they help you whenever you need. The school is really close from University of Toronto, so you can cross the street and experiment other style of life. The location of the school is perfect because you are near from museums, parks and turistic places. The coolest thing is that in last year of highschool you can choose an enphasis. So its perfect if you want to focus right now in your career.

Founded in 1892, it's got a long colourful history with plenty of wartime mementos on display in the lobby area so if you are a history buff check it out. I've heard there's even a tunnel from it to nearby Central Tech on Spadina for wartime production use. It's great how these old schools went all out for kids and had everything from an art-deco theatre for performances, as well as a full size gym (no need for double duty!) as well as a large pool in the basement where the Grade 9's go swimming. The alumni also read like a Toronto historical who's-who. David Cronenberg, Frank Gehry, Paul James, Max Kerman, Stephen Lewis, Howie Mandel, Joe Pantalone, Louis Rasminsky, Harry Rosen, Morley Safer, Sam Shopsowitz-Shopsy's, Sam the Record Man Sniderman, Kiefer Sutherland, Wayne and Shuster met there, and the list goes on! My daughter did very well, even though there aren't the perks she would like that are found in the mega-schools in the affluent burbs, it was perfect that she is able to walk to HCI in a very nice University Annex neighbourhood, no less. The music program here is impressive, as is the art program. She was able to organize an after school choir club of up to 20 kids who willingly go sing as a group every Wednesday after school when they could be on their phones, they choose not to. They also do extracurricular gigs at old age homes, etc. I look forward to the regular music concerts here and since she's in Grade 12, this year is sadly the last one. Highly recommended!

Attending The Linden School was one of the worst experiences of my life. It has been over 10 years…read moresince I left, and I still carry trauma from my time there. Instead of being a place of growth and encouragement, the school created an atmosphere of fear, exclusion, and constant judgment. A teacher, Rory consistently singled me out in ways that felt unfair and humiliating. The leadership under the principal, Janice, only made things worse -- the administration fostered an environment that was punitive rather than supportive, and students like me were left feeling isolated and diminished. The impact of this experience has stayed with me long after, which says everything about the culture of this school. I would strongly warn families to reconsider before sending their children here.

She started at Linden in junior high school with average grades and a perception of herself as an average student who struggled in various subjects. She left Linden with top grades across all subjects and a perception of herself as someone who could do anything she set her mind to. She went on to attend the University of Toronto and graduated with an Honours Degree with Highest Distinction. I will always be grateful to the Linden School. This school had a profoundly positive impact on my daughter's life.
