I've been an Express Fitness member for over a decade. A previously great gym, I have grown…read morefrustrated with how the parent gym, Executive, seems eager to find ways to nickle and dime members, advertise disingenuously, and how staff attention has waned. Many gyms seem to have a cost model of a sign-up fee plus monthly charge. At New Year, to entice potential customers, the start-up fee is often waived. However, Express is the only gym I know which has started to carry this supplemental forward year after year. When is a $29.99/monthly fee really a $34.16 monthly fee? When they tack a hidden $50 "maintenance fee" onto your account at yearly renewal time. It's slimy fake advertising. If you have issues with credit card numbers getting stolen, Express will want to charge you for that, too. The second time my billing card was compromised and account number changed, Express issued a $35 charge for a bounced $24.99 charge (monthly fee at the time) against a closed card. This fee was $10 more than the actual charge that bounced! Do you want to use the top row lockers so you're not hunched over using the bottom row lockers? Express will want to charge you a rental fee for that, too. The parent gym, Executive, actually locks all the top row lockers so you're forced to use the bottom ones. "Hunch over for health?" In fairness, they're not yet all locked in Hooksett. A friend left Express in 2016 when they instituted the "maintenance fee" and speaks quite highly of his Planet Fitness membership at half the price. Staff there is always out and about cleaning up and organizing equipment, a refreshing change from the mess that sometimes greets late day visitors at Express. (Express also has at least one slob member who trims his beard and leaves the trimmings around the sink which may sit there for hours. This has gone on for years.) There are some pluses. There is new equipment starting in 2018. There is free childcare with ample toys. Care quality varies by employee, however: sometimes there is interactive child engagement, sometimes a student is busy doing homework while the TV provides entertainment. Regardless, I am very happy Express has a nut-free policy. If you care about building functional full-body strength and balance, doing things like barbell squats and dead-lifts are a key training component you can do at Express. Planet Fitness is all about machines so you'd miss those there. I used to love Express, now I sound like crotchety old man describing it. I still go because it's the closest place I can lift heavy weights once or twice a week. I try to work around the class schedule, since many group exercise instructors blast class music so it's louder than the ambient music in the rest of the gym. My "light" days are now at home with a doorway pull-up bar, Bowflex adjustable dumbbells, and an incline bench. A few small fixes, and some integrity in the billing office, would be all it would take to make Express great again.

A little more pricy per month than other gyms in the area, but express offers a large amount of…read moremachines that I hadn't found at other local gyms. Good classes such as yoga, Pilates, spin and strength and core are also included with cost of gym. Would recommend for residents of the Hooksett area.

I always go in the late morning hours and have had a good experience every time. The hydro massage is fabulous. No problems there as someone else mentioned in their comments.

What could you improve? How about hiring adults instead of kids? I've been working out for over…read moreforty years, but I can't recall any gym worker actually going out of their way to harass me until today at the Hookset Planet Fitness. The workout went great until I decided to hit the Black Card amenities. The first session went well with the Total Body, but when I scheduled a session with the massage chair with worker Kai, after a few minutes of waiting for it to turn on, it was evident it wasn't scheduled by the worker. So, I went out and asked them if they could turn it on, which the next worker, Tyler, scheduled. I went back, sat in the chair, and lo and behold, it wasn't working a second time. So, I went out and asked them if they were messing with me, and of course, they said no. They scheduled me for the chair beside it, which worked. A minute later, a member came in and used the same chair that didn't work twice for me, and lo and behold, it worked for him. So I cut the session short To address it with the workers, their reply was, "Oh, that's weird." I said, "Weird? Yeah, sure, weird." I asked if the manager was around so I could address it with her, and they said she wasn't. I asked if she was working the next day, and they said no. However, I'll be going in anyway to see for myself because, at this point, all trust was lost. It's very disappointing because I go to the gym, do my thing, don't drop weights, I don't yell during my sets, and I don't say two words to anyone. Most of the time, I have my hat on with my head down, but some young workers feel the need to go out of their way to harass someone who wasn't doing a damn thing. It's very sad and disappointing to have to go through that when all I do is mind my own business. Please hire adults who actually respect the members. Bad workers make the business not worth going to!

I have filled out a form with personal information, been photographed and provided my license. This past week, I went as usual, was told my photo was terrible, was rephotographed and then told I needed to pay. This has never happened before. The two women at the desk told me that it had been other workers at reception who should not have let me in, but they were the checkers that have let me in before. The two receptionists were not willing to listen; they were not willing to accept that they were switching conditions for my participation. They offered to "sell" a day pass. Then said we didn't have to pay for it. The YMCA advertises itself as a warm, welcoming, supportive environment for all manner of families. The experience left me with a deep sense of not belonging. I was there simply to assist my 17 month old granddaughter in the pool. I was very uncomfortable. The welcoming environment should begin at the reception desk. The receptionists are woefully unskilled at dealing with their customers. My daughter pays $100 a month for a family membership.

Before Christmas, the water used to be between 90 and 92 since Christmas it has been anywhere from 86 to 89 the last day I was there I was told by the lifeguard that the water would be a little cooler today because it was cloudy they were adding cold water to the pool to clear it little by little each day. I had a pool for 30 years and I never heard of adding cold water to clear up a cloudy pool . I was always under the impression to clear a pull up from clouding as you add clarify ,that day when I left the pool the front desk I said goodbye and the person at the front desk said see you tomorrow I said no you won't because the water in the teaching pool is too cold and I won't be back for a couple of weeks that person said to me oh yesterday that pool was 93° I said no it wasn't the next day on your website on fb it stated that the heater was being repaired. So obviously that pool was not 93 and we had been complaining about it for two weeks. I do hope that when I return the water temperature is warmer. I know that pool is used for people that have arthritis and prefer the water to be warmer.
