Owing to its sidestreet location, abundance of window plants, friendly service, and the contrast of shiny metal coffee implements couched among wooden tables, this place feels like a little vacation. The back room has a large French window that opens into a green courtyard, perfect for finding one's peace and calm, say, to work on a dissertation (print shop just across the street) or simply to decompress. The bagels are not New York Style, but rather are a little more bready. That said, the bagel sandwiches are tasty in their own right. So while I can't say that you'll get an authentic bagel (NY obviously being the benchmark), I can say that you'll have a tasty little breakfast/lunch/snack. They also offer an assortment of cakes that look pretty good. They were out of plain bagels when I got there in early afternoon, so I contented myself with an onion bagel. My accompaniment was happy with her parmesan bagel. Additionally we got the turkey bagel which came with a dollop of relish which was a nice surprise to the flavor. The egg bagel with pancake was just ok. Nothing too special about it. And the syrup in Germany has a different taste than what I'm used to. The big issue was that the sandwiches are made to order and there is only one person making them for the entire place. They came out one at a time and was very slow... much slower than was convenient since we were trying to go somewhere. Overall this place is just ok. There's another location in the general area that might be a better option. Or try California Bean for way better food at a similar pace (see my review of California Bean).

A tasty little place for frühstück…read more Near the train station and tons of hotels, so there are a decent number of English-speaking folks who come in, but the sweet little lady behind the counter doesn't really speak too much English. She was all smiles and happy laughs, though when I tried to speak the 4 words of German that I can muster out. Kleines frühstück = delicious coffee/tea and a yummy roll (semmel) with jam + butter for 3 euros. Or you can go with the grand daddy frühstück and get cheese, meat, an egg, rolls, and coffee/tea and make your own tasty breakfast sandos for around 11 euros. We had to draw her a picture of a fried egg in order to show what kind we wanted though...so come prepared with a pen! Now I know that spiegel = fried ;) Spiegelei ftw - they cooked them to perfection. Whites completely cooked through, but a heavenly gooeyness of a yolk. They have ice cream + pastries as well that look yum yums.
