We had the pleasure of dining at Remy Bar de Tapas y Vino last night for the first time with…read morefriends and was certainly not disappointed. Paul, our host, took it upon himself to take care of us selecting his personal choice of tapas dishes for us to enjoy. They were amazing!! Will definitely return. Thanks Paul and the great staff at Remy Bar de Tapas y Vino

Set the scene - the first glorious spring night, a girl and a guy and hunger. It was a late dinner…read moredue to the girl's (some may say - annoying?) sporting commitments. There was hunger, there was the knowledge that the boy and the girl hardly finish any meal and then there was Remy. Would Remy step up? Challenge. Accepted. It was supposed to be an AFD, but the night, combined with the temperature called for beer and wine. And so it was. Ask your waitress/waiter on their recommendations, they were spot on. The girl and boy have eyes bigger than their stomachs. Knowing this, the girl and the guy (smartly) decided to only start with two small tapas. Because, they knew, they could always order more later if the hunger still lingered. The girl and the guy decided to also get a paella, because CARBS! duh, yum. Choices though, seafood, chicken, other? Seafood won in the end. The first tapas, a delicious skewer of vegetables and tofu rolled in amazing spices came out and was promptly demolished, along with a conversation about the purpose of tofu. The beef meatball in tomato sauce was the next selection and oh my goodness divine. We had a small issue with this meal, which was promptly resolved by our lovely hostess. The guy was happy because he finally got carbs (he'd been gazing jealously at another table's bread) to soak up all that delicious sauce. And then the holy grail - Paella. Apparently the small serves 1. Well PSA - It serves a small army of at least 4 people. If you are under 4 people ORDER THE SMALL, for the love of food wastage, order the small. Fork battles followed while the girl and the guy battled out to find the scallops, mussels and prawns and rip them from each other. A battle of supremacy. And because I am writing this review, who was victor?! The girl and the guy called time on the paella and rolled out of Remy with epic food babies that had to be walked off around the parks of Hawthorn. The story of the carb crash is one I will save for another day. Well played.

Service was friendly however it was apparent that staff were quite inexperienced with both the drink and food menus. The bartender admitted to not ever making one of their special cocktails and the long wait for our two drinks which arrived separately was not encouraging. Another person took our food orders very slowly and had to stare quite awhile at each item we chose. It was as if it were her first day. Food was a bit slow to arrive as it came all at once rather than as each dish was ready, and we had a few things to share. The food itself was good but not great. Oyster Kilpatrick had a bit too much barbecue sauce for my taste. The jalapeño poppers were ok but didn't come with the traditional cream cheese filling. I did enjoy the scallop skewers from the specials menu. They paired well with the tomato dipping sauce. Lastly the lamb souvlaki was more of a wrap than anticipated. It was good but didn't blow me away. Overall I think they need to refine their approach. While their friendly banter was better than a cold welcome, they need to brush up on their technical skills to really bring this place to the next level.

The tall bartender who admitted to being inexperienced in making a not so virgin Mary or as my friend commented he was a virgin at making a not so virgin Mary did a not so spectacular job at making the cocktail. I couldn't taste any alcohol. Just tomato juice. My friends cocktail was quite delicious with summery hints of pineapple and lemon. We got jalapeno poppers, scallops with tomato sugo sauce and lamb soulvakis to share. The three scallops on each skewer tasted like scallops and didn't go with the pasta like sauce that they were served with. The jalapeno poppers weren't spicy and needed a creamy chipotle sauce not coarse chunky guacamole that fell right off. The lamb souvlaki was delicious with tender pulled lamb and yoghurt with the sour pomegranate sauce, but there just wasn't enough of this awesome sauce. The waitstaff asked us repeatedly whether our meals and drinks were ok. Yes they were friendly but they seemed very inexperienced. And the wait for the food was so long. after 10 minutes of arriving there, we were the only table there. So I didn't really understand why the drinks took so long and why the food came out all at once. This place could be awesome. just needs better service and perhaps balanced flavours. 80 bucks for two with drinks.

Tulum is a hidden gem in a rough neighbourhood. Though Tulum appears to be named after a city in…read moreMexico, it is actually a Turkish restaurant. Make a booking as it gets pretty busy on a Friday evening. Free street parking available after 5pm on a Friday night. The menu offers small and large mezze with all dishes designed for sharing. Don't let the word mezze fool you. You don't receive a platter. Dishes are small and tapas sized - even the mains. So I recommend going for the 6 courses menu. Between us, we had the following 1. Kuzu lamb - slow cooked Lamb with smoked aubergine under grilled capsicum - smoky in flavour and delicate lamb 2. Fava bean - two squares of almost cheesecake textured fava bean topped with berries, peas and some herb. Very uniquely flavoured with a slight citrus flavour. Unique. 3. Pilaf with mussels - two small mounds of deliciously flavoured Rice with mussels in some oily souplike substance. Quite buttery 4. Barramundi in yoghurt sauce. - who knew barramundi went well with yoghurt. And safrron flavoured too. Yummmmm. The food was so good that we had to try dessert. We went for the Jerusalem artichoke crumble with plum. Tasted like a cinnamon rice flavoured pudding with crumble. So many flavours and quite sweet. The Turkish coffee is quite strong and comes with some dark smooth Turkish chocolate. Service is great. Each dish is introduced and explained when it arrives. Food is served quickly. Each dish comes out one at a time giving you time to enjoy each dish. Plates are cleared after every dish; So you can enjoy the new unique flavours of each dish. Split billing provided. For bigger heavier portions I think next time my friend and I will go for the Turkish pide or the cheese dish. Fancy venue. The cocktails look delectable with great attention to detail. Definitely a great place for a date. Definitely expensive so be prepared to spend 70-80 per person excluding drinks.
