I just received a bill from the IRS informing me that I owe $8000 from 2019. I used Mellon tax…read moreservice and they made a "human error" when they calculated my numbers last year. The IRS wanted $1300 in late fees and interest. When I contacted the Mellon crew, they were extremely cavalier about my problem when explained the issue and said I could drop off the paper from the IRS and they would look it over. A week later they called and told me they had calculated wrong and would pay the interest and late fee only. They were quick to inform me that accidents happen.......LESSON........Don't trust your taxes to just anyone. go to a professional CPA who knows what their doing. Every time i was in Mellon I had the feeling that 1..That 80% of the staff really belonged in a nursing home. 2... The other 20% belonged in middle school.3 ...Most of them were crowded on the back steps smoking cigarettes. Mellon was my wife's bright idea. Bad idea. DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE WE DID!!!

My particular review is for another matter that I was requested to get advise from a tax specialist. Now that the "fun" part is done with the purchase of D and I's new home, part of my new fun is selling my existing home. To do so there are various fixes that need to be done to make it market ready. I don't have a lot of extra cash but hoped to sell some shares from a Roth I've been contributing to for well over a decade to help pay some of those costs. My mutual fund company is being extra cautious in selling the shares I requested. In a nutshell I can take back money I've contributed (assuming I've contributed for at least 5 years) but not money that was earned. On that end they sent me a list of all my transactions over the decade or so that I've contributed and suggested I talk to a tax specialist and seek their opinion as far as what I can sell. That's where Lafata comes in. I figured I would likely need a tax service in 2017 to help me file both a non-resident Illinois tax form (since for the time being I will continue to work at my company in IL) and a part-year resident Indiana tax form, so why not try to establish a relationship with a specialist now. I called them on the 12th and the receptionist was polite and transferred me to a tax specialist. But the tax specialist was confused on what and why I needed their help. I explained the best I could and finally he asked for my phone number and said he would call back later in the evening since he was currently busy with other customers. That's totally understandable since it is "tax season" now. But as of the 18th no call. The least he could've done was schedule an appointment for me to come over so I could show and explain my situation more clearly. I contacted another tax service and they were just as confused by my request but they did schedule a time for me to stop by and present my information. I have doubts about the other service as well but will reserve judgment for after my appointment.

So a quick Google search found me Glenn Barath. I talked with him by phone and was very impressed with him. He was very friendly and very knowledgeable. He had answers to all my questions and I had many of them! It is not an easy decision to switch insurance companies. And there are so many agents out there. But I felt very comfortable talking to him. He was honest and did not try to sweet-talk me. He was able to give me a quote within 15 minutes of talking. A quote that saved me more than I thought possible. And there was no pressure after he gave the quote. He told me to take time and think about switching if I needed to. And that is rare these days. There is always pressure everywhere you go to make a decision that minute. I also know I could have still switched to State Farm but found another State Farm agent. But I really like Glenn. Knowlegable, friendly, and no-pressure....what more can you ask more?!

During our stay in a nursing home, Glenn not only took it upon himself to develop relationships with our family members, but came to visit us often. He kept us informed of what was happening without us even asking and gave us information he knew we'd need for our lawsuit. The most surprising and heartwarming part is that he cared enough to visit us at night, after "work hours".....compassion in his eyes and always doing his best to lighten our burden. Glenn has proved to us time and again that he's not only an amazing insurance agent, but an even more amazing human being.
