Subsequently, the Russians occupied this site, destroying the Tlingit homes and building their own houses instead. Eventually, the powers of the Russian Alaska shifted from Kodiak to Sitka, and this site hosted a two-story brick building known as the Governor's House which was then subsequently destroyed by fire. The top of the hill has great views and informational panels, but no structures left standing. There is an accessible path up the hill with informational panels, as well as one with stairs that's more direct and no informational panels. He wasn't available so he set us up with Captain Aedon and deckhand brother Zander. Aedon picked us up on time with a smile and wonderful spirit. Aedon put us on the fishing spots to catch four King Salmon, one we were able to keep and ship home, one that was too small to keep, and two that I was unable to land :-(. We also caught a large Lingcod and a couple others smaller ones. Captain Aedon and Zander were both open to share so much information about their fishing techniques and the Sitka culture. Amanda from Sitka Point Lodge was excellent as well. She contacted us the day of the charter to get copies of our fishing licenses so she could print them and give them to Captain Aedon with our delicious Sandwiches. Chips, and cookies. We were also provided sodas and waters. She also asked us if we needed rain gear and deck boots. It starts next to...somebody's house. It officially ends at "lunch rock", but many people call this "Mt Verstovia". It's all very confusing but Mt Verstovia is actually the craggy peak viewable from where the trail officially ends. To get there, you'll need to do a little bushwhacking, some rock scrambling, and maybe some snow climbing. If, at any time, it feels extremely hard/dangerous, you are probably in the wrong area, and should descend and try somewhere else. There isn't really a trail so you just have to route-find your way up to the summit. The summit, is pretty spectacular. There is a granite (?) "diving board" on the summit that overlooks all of Sitka and the volcano in the distance. I'm usually not big on "summit photos", let alone "summit selfies", but even a crusty stick-in-the-mud like me had to pose for a summit photo here!
