When we arrived, we were served very quickly and taken to our lovely table. There were 7 of us…read moredining and they had a great table layout, meaning nobody was sat alone. The music was a good volume so you could converse. We were still waiting for the rest of the party to arrive but were served immediately with a bottle of water and offered drinks. I ordered an iced caramel latte which was incredible. It had just enough coffee and was sweet and caramelly As I wasn't feeling super hungry, I ordered a starter as a main which they were happy to accommodate. I ordered the prawn cocktail starter and side of skinny fries. The fries were crispy but not too crispy and did not need a lot of salt. The prawn cocktail was lovely, really tasty sauce. It came with 2 king prawns and the waitress also bought me sourdough at an additional £1 cost. I would say that there were slightly too many herbs in the prawn cocktail but it was still delicious. Overall, we all really enjoyed our meal, the vibe was lovely, staff were friendly and the food was great.

Often a meal in a British Pub is unremarkable. Twofold due to the copious amounts of fermented…read morebeverages on offer to consume and due sometimes to the lack of luster in the meal offerings. Sometimes the first, sometimes the latter, most times both. Ok, throw everything I said out of the window here. Ambiance, meal and beverage were outstanding by pub standards to the level of gastropub. I had the burger, fries and my companions had the fish and chips. We all had cocktails and assorted beer on tap. I loved my cocktail enough to have two. The prices are rather steep (or rather dear) as the locals might say. But the ambiance and quality make up for that. The outdoor seating is nice as well.

Unfortunately now they have introduced loud background music. Not sure why, but talking to your friends ends up being a shouting match. Worse than having a jukebox!! Time to find another pub.

The King Rufus used to be a much-loved go-to pub whenever I visited my family in England. It was…read morealways relaxed, friendly and offered up a varied menu of both drinks and food that seemed to veer some distance away from the 'ordinary'. My most recent visit could not have been more different. The Rufus has been swallowed up by one of those soulless pub chains (The Eating Inn - perhaps the worst name for a food chain ever) and converted into... yes, you've guessed it... a soulless pub. Like a lot of the large pub chain brands it is now all style over substance. Cheap wood and chrome Ikea-style furnishings, bored staff and a bland warmed-up/microwaved 'Americanised' food menu that on the surface appears to be good value but is actually something of a gastronomic nightmare. The corporatisation of the English pub is a disappointing development in recent years but I do respect how it is managing to save a lot of establishments that otherwise would go to the wall. However, it would appear that some chains get it right - like the Hungry Horse chain, who don't alter the feel of the pub but compliment it with affordable drinks and food - whilst others are hellbent on ripping the heart out of once-loved watering holes. Edited to add:- Just discovered that the Greene King organisation owns both the Hungry Horse AND EatingInn brands. How can one company get it so right and so wrong at the same time?
