Our traveling group had many disappointments with the staff at Olarain. They were absolutely disrespectful and hypocritical to us and made our travels much less enjoyable, and possibly even upsetting. For some reason, they placed our group in all separate locations around the hotel, which made it very inconvenient to meet up with our group. Whenever we did meet up in small groups of 4-5 in a single room, we got noise complaints (even when being relatively quiet during the daytime hours). I have no clue why they chose to build such thin walls. This would not have been an issue if our group was all placed in a single location. There is no reason why more than two people should not be allowed to hang out in a single room. This rule made it very difficult to spend time with the people that we were friends with.
A major grievance that we had was the flat-out disrespect of the staff members for our privacy and common courtesy. About privacy, there were two instances where a female concierge worker swiped into our friend's rooms during waking hours for no particular reason at all. Our friends were extremely distraught by this occurrence, as they were getting dressed in their rooms at the time, let alone doing nothing wrong at all. I have never heard of such a violation of privacy in a hotel, and this alone should be reason to not stay at Olarain at all.
Hypocrisy was another disappointing issue that we dealt with in our stay. Whenever we came back to the hotel and were being a bit loud, the staff made sure that we were silent (even going to the depths of following us all the way back to our rooms). However, it was quite peculiar to see students from Spain doing the same exact thing as us with not even a word from the concierge. Why did they get such special treatment? On one particular night, we were accused of bringing in alcohol to the building when we simply had water in our bottles from a hike. This was extremely uncalled for and an over-exceedingly invasive event.
We were served breakfast every day during our stay, and the food was mediocre (at best) every time. On the daily, they served runny uncooked scrambled eggs, undercooked bacon, and undercooked hot dogs (in the morning?). As you may be able to imagine, this everyday meal got quite old and bland very quickly. They had a single employee working breakfast, and all too often there were foods missing due to the lack of staff working. This alone felt like a 2-star hotel restaurant.
If all of the above criteria were not persuasive enough to convince you to avoid this below average hotel, the location was utter rubbish. The ten minute walk to the beach turned out to be the only redeeming quality of the location, although these ten minutes would only bring you to a rather deserted beach near very little attractions, restaurants, and other things to do. It was a fifty minute walk to the best restaurants, bars, and mere life of the city. This walk was quite ridiculous to make two times a day (bus fees added up quickly). Olarain was just about the furthest location from nearly anything desirable in San Sebastian. There is not much else to say about that.
So you choose. Have a 3/10 vacation at Olarain and maybe save twenty euros or go spend your money on a hotel that will actually respect your privacy and feel like home. read more
