This review has nothing to do with Dr. Richard Pekala and all to do with Dr. Donald Nikaitani. It…read moreall started when I was on the market for a new PCP (Primary Care Physician) and I came across this clinic accepting new clients. Scheduled my 1st appointment for a checkup and a concern about a skin rash. MUST READ!!! 1st Appointment: It was barely satisfactory. It was kind of a meet and greet type of situation. After the exchange of pleasantries, I went on to sharing my concerns of my skin rash. He then recommended a variety of tests too "pin-point" the cause of the rash. So with my naïve trust in this new doctor, I took his recommended tests. Test after test, with no real findings of what caused my rash. Instead, these tests lead to other "suspected" illnesses that I might have. Ex. He made me take a Urine Test (I have no idea, how this is related to my skin rash but I followed his instructions anyways). The test found hints of blood in my Urine and told me we need to run more tests to make sure this is not serious. Soon, I found myself testing for things that didn't pertain to the main reason why we started taking these tests in the 1st place and I was beginning to feel irritated and my wallet started to feel the abused. 2nd Appointment: I made a 2nd appointment to follow-up on the tests that he made me do with a list of questions specifically pertaining to the skin-rash. After he presented his test which not surprisingly were "inconclusive." I ignored his recommendations for more tests to be done and I asked if I could share some questions I had on my Prepared List. He said okay, and I started to ask my well prepared questions. I noticed he started to get irritated as if he didn't want me asking those specific questions. His answers were not straight forward as if he was beating around the bush trying to buy time to make up an excuse. I then bluntly asked him why we were taking the tests that seem to have no relevance to the skin rash. He then replied, "these tests are the process of elimination." Note this, I have been researching on my own end of what the rash might be and I came-up with a 90% possibility that I found the cause but my research told me that a doctor has to run a test to confirm it. So I asked him since we were doing the "Process of Elimination, to test for this specific Rash Irritant/Illness." He was surprised as if he suddenly understood that I was not a young Naïve kid and has done my due diligence on the situation. He then attempted to make an excuse of why he cannot perform the test. I asked him bluntly, is it the fact that you "cannot perform it or you do not want to." His exact words were "I do not see any symptoms of that specific illness, therefore, I will not approve of this test." I then replied with conviction, "All your tests do not show any visible signs of relevance to the cause of my rash, that is not a good enough answer." I then demanded the test to be done. He denied my request and told me that if I really wanted the test done, I have to go to a different doctor to do it. And he went on recommending a doctor 100 miles away from Kailua-Kona City, in Hilo. (Like I was stupid enough to take any more advice from this Doctor that does Questionable Practices) I went home and did my research and found a doctor in my city, Kailua-kona, that could administer the test. So I quickly made an appointment and saw the doctor. She pleasantly approved my request of performing the test for the specific skin illness. Results came in quickly and was positive. I finally found the answer and started treatment right away for the Itchy Skin Rash. The rash soon disappeared, but my disappointment of this doctor did not go away. I love my hometown and I am writing this to protect my community. There will be people in this world, even at a professional level that will take advantage of ignorance. I believe, this doctor's practices are VERY QUESTIONABLE. I will be writing a Complaint Letter to the Board of Doctors to investigate my case. Each test cost me estimated $50-$100 per test. In the end, it seems that I paid for tests that had another intention other then finding the reason to my skin rash. I will urge specific representatives to investigate what the "other intention are." In the meantime, I recommend learn from my experience and stay away from this Questionable Doctor.

When I filed…read morea complaint with my insurance company I got a letter from Hawaii Family Physicians stating I was discharged from their practice. Two days after my discharge letter, I received another letter discharging my daughter as well. Hers was accompanied by a demand for payment on a 12.00 copay from an office visit we had less than a week prior. I called to inquire about the charge as I made a cash payment in the office at her visit however I was only able to leave a message for the finance person. Three days later, no return call I received a letter saying my daughter's account had been turned over to a collection company. I believe my insurance company is in the process of an investigation that may include some sanctions against the practice. The agent handling my claim implied this was not the first mistake of its kind reported from their practice.

He is impressive to me and I look forward to my visits with him and his opinions as well. Dr King is fine for sure but Dr Arthur's is closer in age to me so we relate better !! My wife and I came from the mainland and now reside here in Kona. We had to wait to become patients and it was worth it. I have some medical training and I can tell you that Hawaii Family Physicians and their staff are a pleasure to work with and they r at the top of their game. All in all they are a first class medical operation that we are proud to be a part of as patients. They are also aware of alternative Eastern medicines and therapies. Definitely they r open and informed of what is new as well as time tested medicines and procedures. Shelly and Jamie Goldner
