This Brewery in France makes some great beers…read more All their ingredients are local and spent grains are given to farmers for animal feed. They are experimenting with aging their beers in all types of wine, bourbon, cognac, whiskey barrels. There were barrels with tripels, barley wines, stouts, IPAs, sours (blueberries, peaches, other fruit), and a few others. We were very fortunate to receive a nice tasting from the brewer's daughter - Le Petite Princesses - which is a 2.9% saison collaboration with Jester King - very refreshing, and amber ale and a biere de Garde which was excellent. The tasting room decor and ambiance is superb (see photos). The brewer, Daniel, started his brewery 20 years ago and had been home brewing since he was a teenager. He's done an excellent job and continues to expand.

Maybe I'm still surprised when I get change from twenty euros... Only downside to this place is that it allows smoking inside. Though it is illegal across the EU, the French still want to puff on the sticks of cancer. This place doesn't give a damn where they do it, enclosed space or wherever. Not a pleasant experience when you're trying to give yourself cirrhosis of the liver by drinking.

They also have bread and pastries. The bakery is located right on the central market square in the center of Desvres. Highly recommended to stop by if you have time!

I literally went to Calais because I got my first passport at age 22 and thought 'I should probably use this'... Well, actually my girlfriend said 'you are using this'. But that's beside the point. Either way, I ended up in Calais. I then ended up here. Now you'd think that, when leaving the country, you'd at least attempt to learn the language of wherever you are going... NOPE! So I ended up in this very nice Patisserie, attempting to order some very nice pastries... Lets just say, it was am embarrassment for all involved. Most notably, me. Either way, I ended up with a couple of pastries (there was a lot of 'that', accompanied by a pointed finger). They were extremely nice. Like, if I knew what I'd have ordered, I'd try and get some more. They were great. If you are in Calais, go here. But first, learn some French... Then tell me what the awesome sponge squares full of fruit and jam are called... Because googling 'What are those french sponge things with fruit and jam in them called' was not particularly helpful.

Good coffee and lovely croissant and pain au chocolat, and a good choice of breads and cakes. There's a huge car park round the back too. Every time we travel through Calais we come here instead of having the hotel breakfast. They open at 6.30 am, and they're right next to the beach, so the pups get a good walk too. The only downside is they're shut on Sundays.
