Hampden House is a winner. The landlord Marc is an extremely great guy and he is very prompt with…read moreany issues that tenants have. The main issue with the building is that things break easily and constantly because it is an old building. Otherwise the location is unbelievable. There is a Starbucks literally downstairs and a Sainsbury right across the street. The tube is just a couple of blocks away and it is a very safe area. There is a man always on call who fixes things around the building. Our fuses consistently blow which is weird and annoying. We've had to have many things fixed in just over a month of living here. A huge annoying is the washing machines downstairs. First of all, there is only two of them. Second of all, they cost FOUR POUNDS!! How is that possible? It's a ridiculously high price. And the driers suck, one cycle is never enough. Marc refuses to fix the broken washing machines in Flat number 25 which students want to use communally, which is very annoying.

My stay at the Hampden House surpassed all expectations! Let me tell you that pictures do not do…read morethis place justice! It really is an amazing place to live in! I stayed at the Hampden House for 12 weeks and not once did I have a single problem that was not resolved. Before I go about the amazing location of Hapmden House, let me first talk more about the flat. The interior of the flat has been maintained to keep its original shabby chic décor; bathroom and kitchen has been kept in good shape, living room and dinning room are very spacious, all the utensils and utilities you can think of are available, new fridge and washer/dryer--the apartment also came equipped with washing soap, toilet paper, and towels! The place has a very warm homey feeling and you never felt weird like you would in more metal/concrete skyscraper-esque buildings. Part of our lease agreement was to have our flat serviced once a week and the cleaning staff has done a great job! My only problem with the flat would probably be the carpet--it was a little worn out to be honest. Now, about the management, the property manager, Marc, is such a great guy! He is always on top of things and manages to get problems fixed and fast. Micah, who lives on premises and works with Marc, is the most amazing person! I've been locked out, locked in, broken doors, dropped things on other peoples balconies, you name it, he has managed to handle it all! Location wise is probably Hampden House greatest asset! It is literally a 5-minute walk from everything important--there is a Sainsbury, Tesco 5 minutes away. Waitrose is a 10-minute walk from the flat, Oxford Street is under a 10 minute walk, there are two tube stations all 5-8 minute walk (Regent's Park and Great Portland Street Station), and for those Starbucks lovers, there is a Starbucks right next to the flat! I definitely recommend Hamdpen House to anyone looking for a warm, cosy, winning let experience! Fatima Bukhamseen, 2012

Strand

Oh hey Jody, why are you writing a Yelp review at 2am?…read more Well dear invisible friend, there's a darn good reason i'm up and on the internet at 2am on a Friday and unfortunately, it's not because i'm just getting in from weekend mischief. It's because, up until a half hour ago - I was pretty sure my house was going to blow up... Before I launch into WHY, and lose more than half of the readership to my rambling, let me put the most important part of this review at the top: 0800 111 999 This is the number to the 24 hour emergency gas line. If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak: CALL THEM. Ok... onwards to the ramble. I live in Edinburgh. Earlier this week, my neighbour pointed out that the house was likely due for a gas check. I'm not sure if this led to my complete and utter overreaction, but i'm assuming it was, so it's a relevant detail to the story. Yesterday, there was a distinct gas smell coming from my kitchen but I didn't think much of it... however this evening, when the smell came back and lingered for a few hours, I took to Google to find out what to do. The reason I put that number smack at the top of this review is that hopefully, it saves someone else the trouble of going through multiple Google searches that make you more and more paranoid, before actually finding the emergency number above. But eventually I did come across this number and within a few rings, someone picked up. He set out a very clear set of instructions - contain pets, don't turn anything on or off, open windows, turn off gas - and told me a technician would be at the house within an hour. May I remind you again of the time? So I hunkered down and waited. Within 20 minutes, a very lovely fellow knocked on the door. It took about 15 minutes to check all the lines and he was good natured about me following him around, chirping questions. There was no leak in the house (whew) and I felt a bit silly, but at the end of the day, with something like a gas leak, it truly is better safe than sorry. Regardless, I was SO impressed by how quickly these folks responded - it is nice to know in situations like these that help truly is just around the corner.

London Short Letting

London Short Letting

Marylebone

My husband and I had 4 weeks before our flat that we secured opened up. So we stayed with London…read moreShort Letting. They have various properties and we stayed at the Finchley Rd one. It is safe and clean. It is really convenient when you have to live somewhere temporarily, as all the bills, utilities are included. Our studio was small and the bathroom tiny but we didn't expect luxury for short term accommodations. But our studio had three major gripes: A) It was hotter than Satan's ballsack in our room. It could have been that since we had an Eastern exposure to our window, which let in the bright sun and didn't allow for the hot air to go out. Now, some of the places they offer A/C, which are pricier but this didn't. Plus, with a fridge and TV operating in a small room, I feel as though those items emitted a ton of heat too. B) Frustratingly slow internet. Always chopping in and out. Unable to make Facetime/Skype calls without it shutting off. I had called at least 3 times about it. Only once did a tech come and reset the router. It was hellish since we are tethered to technology. C) The laundry machines. There are 4 (2 washers/2dryers) but for whatever reason, they shut off one side of the machines and only the shitty dryer was left operating for an entire building of people, which meant that laundry never dried. Sometimes it took 3 cycles to dry, but you always had to fight other people for it. Minor gripe is that a double bed is considered acceptable for 2 grown adults. Since my hubby is 6'6", this was awful, but we just had the mindset that this was temporary... Listen, housing in London in general, sucks! So if you are in a pinch, this can work. Try not to stay too long. But there are 2 bus stops literally outside your door, the overground 20 min walking distance, Finchley Rd or Golders Green station about another 20 min (you can always take the bus for 8 min to the tube), Fortune Green park down the road, a Tesco by the park, and the O2 center, with a giant Sainsbury's, down the road. It was OK for what it was but we are SO ready to leave! But in the end, we are grateful for the option as AirBnB or anything else would have been a lot more money. Best for emergency situations like ours.

The 90 minute tour cost £15 plus general admission. We booked on-line two weeks in advance. We arrived early with our tickets stamped for opening at 9:30. Security staff scans and queues up visitors by ticket times and there was a line that had well over a thousand people waiting to enter. All general admission visitors are given a headset with a wonderful guided tour upon entering. There is a logical pathway to follow and learn about the Abbey. Hannah was our private tour guide. She was wealth of information about the history of the Abbey and the people that were important. As part of the tour we had access to parts of the facility that were not part of the normal tour route. We were also allowed to sit in the choir seating for a brief lecture. It was invigorating to sit where royalty had been. The tour is fabulous and very worth the money. The Abbey is mostly French Gothic, but a mix of styles as different King's added on sections and chapels during their reigns. Much of the Abbey was restored after the damage caused by looting after the Reformation and additional damage caused by the WWII Blitz bombing. Most of the stained glass has been replaced. The history dates back over 1000 years and we saw evidence of an ancient door and uncovered mosaics. There is a lot to see, including graves of many notable people and royalty. Restrooms are available towards the end of the tour (but expect a line). There is a cafeteria and several gift shops. Current renovations are adding additional guest restrooms. Wear comfortable walking shoes, expect uneven floors. Arrive a bit early to go through security. I highly recommend a visit. I wouldn't bring young children.
