We recently had a disappointing experience with Mia Bella's pediatrician's office regarding billing…read morepractices. After a very brief appointment -- approximately five minutes -- during which Compound W was applied to treat a wart, our insurance was billed and paid the adjusted charges. We were then charged additional out-of-pocket fees on top of that. At the office's direction, we contacted their billing department to dispute the remaining balance due to the minimal nature of the treatment provided. Unfortunately, the charges were not adjusted. We understand healthcare has costs, and we respect medical professionals' time and expertise. However, we believe billing should be reasonable and proportionate to the services rendered. Because of this experience, we've decided to seek care elsewhere. We're sharing this so other families can be informed and ask detailed questions about treatment and billing upfront.

I am not fond of any of the other doctors there, but it's been a good, comfortable place for my kid. But now, to be able to continue to receive the same service I have been getting and expecting for my family, I have to pay an administrative fee of $150-$250 a year (depending on the number of kids that you have). See the attached photo straight from their check-in portal. Otherwise they will charge you for every non-medical service that isn't covered by insurance - such as a call from your doctor about lab results, a vaccination record for your child or a medication refill over the phone. I am shocked and utterly horrified. It's bad enough that our insurance companies rip us off left and right with high premiums, deductibles, and copays, but now my provider is charging administrative fees!?!?? Their excuse - the insurance companies don't compensate us enough so we need the patients to cough it up. Food, housing, clothing, medicine costs have all increased and people are barely making ends meet these days. Incomes have not increased, but the cost of living has. And now, my pediatricians office wants to make more money by charging for simple things that should be included in the overall care my child receives. Sure, I can opt-out...but then what are you going to charge me for? What non-medical charges will I now expect to see on my bill? I called for a refill...how much do you charge for that? I asked for a note for my child's school....how much do you charge for that? These are not things that should ever be something a parent worries about. We have enough worries about our children and putting food on the table. Now I have to have anxiety about more mystery charges appearing on a bill? There was no prior warning about this...no emails that went out to parents and patients, no update on the website...this appeared as I was trying to do a check for my child for their appointment. There is minimal transparency about what you are charging for these non-medical services. I want no part of being at a place that does something like this. I will need to find a new office now...this is so unethical. How many more patients do you think you will lose because of this? I have never been at an office that has ever done this. What are you going to start charging for next??? How sad...customer care and service is now a money making business at Mia Bella Pediatrics.

What used to feel like a pediatric office now feels like a business focused on maximizing revenue. Getting an appointment is an exercise in frustration. Even reaching someone by phone is difficult, and when you do, you're often told there isn't any availability. The patient portal is another nightmare--I spent an hour just trying to regain access, which made communicating with the office even more difficult. The front office staff seem completely burned out. Every interaction feels transactional, and there always seems to be another fee. The final straw came when we switched to a new pediatrician. Our new provider attempted to retrieve my children's vaccination records through the California Immunization Registry, only to discover Coastal Kids hadn't entered them. Because of that oversight, I had to request the records directly from Coastal Kids--and they charged me $20 per child to send records to our new doctor's office. Charging families to correct the consequences of your own administrative failures is a terrible way to treat patients. If you're looking for a pediatric practice that is accessible, patient-focused, and organized, I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere. We left because the quality of the experience steadily declined, and unfortunately, our experience during the transfer out only confirmed that we made the right decision.

They ask good questions and make sure all of my questions are answered. The longest wait time I've had here is 15 minutes which is so great when trying to get sick kids seen. They also have Saturday and Sunday care which is SO helpful. The front office is happy and it reflects into the practice.

I'm sad to say that I no longer trust this group with my child's care after discovering the abundance of unnecessary vaccines that were given which were not required in order to attend California public schools. Instead of vaccinating my child with vaccines that were mandated by the California public school system first, the physicians decided to prioritize other vaccines that were not mandated. Unfortunately, now I'm going to have to rush getting my child vaccinated with the required vaccines because the office does not know California Public school policies. Despite me verifying verbally at every visit that this was required for school, I was still misled. Moving forward I will not trust any office to tell me which vaccines are required for California public schools, I will research this myself. Tough lesson that I had to learn. In addition, all of our appointments with Dr. Reda felt very rushed. Any questions that I tried to ask he answered with one word versus having a more thorough explanation for a first time mom. I should have switched earlier, but stuck with him because no one else seemed to have a problem. Once I started asking around, I discovered that all of my friends that had referred me to the practice had left for the very same reasons. Wish this was something that I would've talked about sooner. I'm writing this in hopes that the office improves their vaccination schedules and communication. It would've helped to have a plan out the gates for my child's vaccination schedule versus a fly by the seat of your pants and see what happens. In other words, a "don't ask questions" approach. Unfortunately I will never be going back here. They fumbled my daughter's care BIG TIME. This needs…read moreto be known, so the medical staff here can learn, as well as the parents who put their faith in urgent care places like these; to seriously caution where they go for certain medical issues. My 6yr old girl fell at school and hurt her left arm doing cart wheels. We took her here immediately. They took X rays. Then the PA Denea Heintz came to talk to us. She said that her injury broke her humerus bone. The exact report was written as "supracondylar fracture of the distal humerus." PA proceeded to tell us, they don't cast at this location but they usually don't do casts for this injury anyway. All you need is a sling and to keep it elevated as much as possible for 4 weeks. But no surgery to worry about, no alignment issues. She got us in a sling and then said to call the pediatric ortho to schedule a basic follow up. And we left. Well: for one, even if the above info was correct. How the heck is a 6yr old supposed to keep their arm steady in a sling without even a splint? We started to realize that very quick. We called the ortho when we got home. They scheduled us for 7 days later. The following morning. On the advice of Cali-Kids we had her in the sling and sent her to school. Mom had that intuition that something was NOT RIGHT. You could see it in the poor little girl. Her motion, her pain, the swelling she wouldn't move her arm at all. Called the orthopedic again after drop off at school. They said to bring her in 10:45, they had an opening. (Thank God: for Moms intuition and that place having the cancellation). Picked her up from school. Went to see the ortho (which was the office referred by Cali Kids). Dr. Took a while to come in but he came in and said: "I'm sorry it took a while I was on the phone with CHOC @ Orange because I need to have your daughter admitted to the ER for Emergency Surgery and I had to call the on call surgeon and have them review the X-rays and they agreed it was an emergency." He then said unfortunately it was multiple fractures/breaks as well as miss alignment beyond the threshold and he couldn't just cast it, it requires surgical fix. At this point we were blown away. BLOWN AWAY. Told him what was explained to us by Cali-Kids and he couldn't even believe we were referred to him and not an EMERGENCY room. He couldn't believe all they did was put it in a sling. I've never in my life seen a Dr. throw his chair backwards and put his hands on his head and say: WHAT! WHHHHAAAT ???!!! We then got her up to CHOC in Orange and she was admitted to the hospital and had surgery. Parents out there: Take serious caution as to where you go for certain medical problems. Unfortunately it's hard to believe there can be a huge inconsistency with care between urgent care facilities and specialists etc. If there is ever something you think could be serious: DO NOT take the word of an urgent care facility. Just bypass it and go right to the ER. As a parent you don't know. Unless you're a medical professional yourself. But for those of us that are not. If you go to an urgent care. You expect they are pointing you in the best direction. Had we listened in this case and waited 7 days, the surgeon told us it would have been even worse and ultimately our kid would have suffered even more than she needed to. To the staff at Cali-Kids: I'm well aware it's not a perfect world and urgent cares can make mistakes and are not specialists. But please take this as a learning opportunity. If there was a fault by an incompetent staff member. Take action to get them to learn their mistake. And if there is something a staff member is unsure about, or borderline, recommend to the parent that it would be best for them to get an immediate second opinion at an ER. Don't just confidently tell parents they have no surgery to worry about. When that was 100% medically inaccurate to say, based on the X-Rays they took.

The whole experience was mentally tough as a parent but this place was designed for kids and it was very welcoming for kids. The receptionist was very kind and sweet. The whole medical staff was great. My daughter broke a bone and they let her pick the color of her splint. The care was very gentle, sweet, and caring'. At the end they get a coin and get to use it to get a prize.

I took my son to see Dr. Monfared because he was sick. After examining him, she recommended a strep…read moretest, and my husband and I agreed. She later returned and told us that my son tested positive for strep. I then asked if my husband and I could also be tested, and she later told us that all three of us tested positive. However, we were not shown the test results. She prescribed antibiotics for my son. I asked if she could also prescribe antibiotics for my husband and me, but she said she could not, which I understood. After leaving, I decided to seek a second opinion the same day. Another doctor tested all three of us for strep, and all of the results came back negative. That doctor also showed us the actual test results. To be thorough, we also went to Hoag Urgent Care later that same day for another test, and those results also came back negative for strep. Both places told us that what my son has is most likely viral and does not require antibiotics. I want to give Dr. Monfared the benefit of the doubt, but this experience was very concerning. I'm not sure if there was an issue with the testing process, the test kit, or some other explanation. It was frightening because I was very close to giving my baby--who is under 18 months old--antibiotics that may not have been necessary. This situation was especially disappointing because I had hoped she could become my son's pediatrician. It is very easy to make appointments, often even on the same day, the office is close to us, and she appears to be easy to talk to.
