We started with some Mezcalina's and fresh house fried tortillas with salsa's. The chipotle salsa and the avocado with cilantro were a nice change of pace from your normal salsa verde y rojo. The chips were clearly freshly fried and tasted great even without the salsa's. Our appetizers were a baked Camembert with fruit and tortillas, a sopa azteca, and fresh tuna tostadas. The Camembert was quite good as was the soup, but these tuna tostadas were one of the best appetizers I've ever eaten. Everything on them worked so well together and you could add a splash of soy sauce and it was even better! I'd order these as my meal at 90% of the spots in the world and leave happy! Our entrees were a grilled pichana as well as a lobster pizza from the wood fired oven. I love cooking pichana and don't see it often on menus when I go out so that was a nice treat. The temp was perfect for what we asked for and it was seasoned well. The potatoes that came with it had excellent flavor as well. I could take or leave the corn haha When Chas told me he was eating pizza in Mexico with lobster on it I said "dude, what are you doing with your life?" He said just wait til you try it. He ... was right. The lobster was delicious and buttery, the sauce had great flavor, and the cheese (which was not mozzarella) worked surprisingly well. I will say that I normally like my pizza crispy and this was missing that element...but the flavor more than made up for it. The restaurant is located inside the Viceroy Riviera Maya hotel. It was really hard to find, but that made the experience all that more enjoyable. The Viceroy is the definition of a hidden gem. We were received in a palapa in the reception area of this beautiful property. It was night and the the hotel employee accompanied us through lighted pathways through the hotel's grounds that are covered in lush foliage. The restaurant is located near the water's edge and sits above the hotel's lovely pool and overlooking the bar. The open air restaurant is very, very romantic and well-accoutered with comfortable seating, fine flatware and unique pottery. The menu and wine menu are impressively large, with many Mexican influences. There were so many choices on the regular menu that we could hardly decide what we wanted; they also have a tasting menu, so to have the most diverse dining experience, we chose to have that. I would like to say what great service we received from our waiter Sergio and all the other wait staff and hotel employees (they really make you feel like a VIP), and I would also like to praise Chef Carlos Zamora's creative dishes: they all show the incredible quality of Mexican cuisine in the hands of an artist. Women: blouses, skirts, slacks or dresses; dress shoes." Like almost every restaurant on property, Bisou is walk in. It was exceptionally busy so we were placed on a waitlist and provided a pager. We went to a nearby lobby bar and had a round before our pager went off, about 15 min later. Indoor and outdoor seated. Opted for whichever was available first, which ended up being outdoor. Our second least favorite restaurant experience at the resort. Service was nowhere near as attentive as meals we had at all the other restaurants. Meal started with a mushroom broth amuse bouche, which was umami and tasty. Then we noticed every table recieved a bread service, but we never did. Menu is broken down into vegetables, seafood starters and mains, and land starters and mains. Skipped the veggies menu and opted for a starter and main from both the seafood and main menu. Oyster starter was mushroom, back truffle, and parm was tasty but there were shells bits up in the oyster. Sea bass fillet in beurre noir sauce with potato feuille, black garlic puree, and basil oil was overcooked and the black garlic puree was way overpowering. Steak tartare starter wasn't too bad but could have used a touch more salt. Beef fillet in puff pastry was a bit dry and also needed some salt. Overall, most of the food was pretty bland and a bit overcooked. The presentation is on point but it didn't make up for the flavor. Also, maybe it was just because it was a busy evening but the service was really slow, even when it slowed down. This was our longest meal and the one we wanted to leave the quickest yet it took 20+ min between every course.
