I even told the doctor, Daniel Mann, that I suspected pneumonia. He listened to my lungs for less than 10 seconds, dismissed my concerns, and prescribed me an inhaler, steroids, and a cough suppressant--despite the fact that I told him I did not have a cough. When I asked for clarification about my symptoms, the only explanation I was given was "it's probably a cold." When I asked if he could say with certainty that it was not pneumonia, he told me yes. I had to push just to get a COVID and flu test, because in my life I've never had a "cold" this severe. To be fair, I understand my visit was close to closing time. However, this was the only urgent care open at the time, and I simply cannot afford an ER visit. I was hoping for thorough care and reassurance, but instead left feeling dismissed and confused. Over the following week, my symptoms did not improve and actually got worse, especially the difficulty breathing. I ended up going to a different urgent care for a second opinion, where they performed a chest X-ray and confirmed I do in fact have pneumonia. That means I spent an entire week untreated, walking around contagious, exposing my baby brother and my best friend who has severe asthma and lung issues. This misdiagnosis and dismissal could have had serious consequences for me and the people around me. I am extremely disappointed in the lack of thoroughness and the disregard for my symptoms, and I would strongly caution others about the level of care provided here.

The 4th (the most complicated one.) was a total horror. I woke up after 8 hours of surgery and the nurses at Butterworth wouldn't give me any pain medication. When my doctor finally came in after the second day he ordered me Norco. I STILL never got any medication. The nurse would come in singing..."i have your pain pill"! Only to look in the small cup she held and see one Tylenol 500. I am CONVINCED the entire opium epidemic comes right from Butterworth Hospital. Not only do they take your meds when you're in dire need of them, after you finally go home, the surgeon offers to have your scripts sent to you via mail because you may live a ways away. Those never come either. When I ask about the mailed scripts, they tell me i filled them in the Meijer Pharmacy right below Butterworth Hospital. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out I wouldn't have them mailed just to drive all the way back there to fill them. I was labeled a junkie or something because i kept complaining about not getting pain any relief. I have NEVER been addicted to ANYTHING, not even coffee! And i have PTSD over that surgery and the pain i was in and the nasty way i was treated at Spectrum Health Butterworth. Now i have to have a 5th surgery. She did not receive a room until Saturday morning! That's right 3 whole days to get a room when you have a life threatening health issue. This is simply not acceptable, and no where near good health practice! Something is seriously wrong at this hospital. Can something be done? She was left in the hallway for hours outside an ER room before she was finally put in a tiny windowless room in the ER and later transferred to an even smaller room in some sort of "holding area." She could not rest or sleep which probably damaged her weak heart even more. This is not acceptable care, and is especially poor care for those in a life threatening situation. This needs to be fixed immediately. If this hospital is too busy to house patients properly they need to let patients know so they can go to another hospital to get a room and proper care. This seems to have been going on for several years now at this hospital as we had a very similar experience with my father several years ago. Being new to the area, we followed H signs to Spectrum Health ER on Michigan Street NE on Pill Hill downtown GR. We dropped off at the door and were greeted outside quickly, welcomed, did not waste time by signing in, escorted to a private room - all within 5 minutes. A nurse came in within 10 minutes. A doctor visited us within 15 minutes. The admissions clerk visited us within 20 minutes and didn't require payment of any type. We were in and out within an hour and half - fully served and fixed up. Quite a remarkable experience considering other ERs I've had the terror of visiting. Oh - and we didn't get any random, infectious diseases as a Bonus Gift w/ Purchase after we left! Hurrah!

When I was discharged I realized why they were so distracted.... they all had their phones out gently scrolling through social media. Excellent! I also got some good pics of them on their phones! When I was leaving I asked the security officer if this was commonplace and he said absolutely! I would definitely search other medical aid while in Grand ... Update: the staff put the wrong address on my Bill and sent my info to address from over 15 years ago. After calling them to find out about my bill they realized they took a pic of my ID and insurance and just didn't update the file.... the incompetence is never ending here.
