I remember I mumbled to myself "What is this?" as my curiosity intensified upon my entrance to this golden gem of a retail location. First of all, it's so much more than a souvenir shop! You can just tell they put so much effort into carefully selecting their inventory. Go into the store looking for Tylenol. Ask if they have a card minimum and the masked old lady after huffing and puffing tells me yes but if I choose debit it will cost her less. I was cool with purchasing something else cause I know how that goes. I said since it costs you a fee I'll go grab some drinks. I go to the back cooler and an older gentleman comes out of the stock room. He, WITHOUT A MASK ON and gets as close as he possibly could to me. I grab my drinks, go back up to the counter grab my Tylenol and unpleasantly check out with the old lady. I will say it was an added touch for the unmasked many to start wiping the door handles after I left. But man they really need to practice what they preach and if he's going to do that provide some ample space. I also was displeased with the drink selection, it was limited, the store is dirty besides the clean door handles and smells weird.

When we saw said this and apologized she rudely told us it was right there and proceeded to get close to us and asked us to leave, we had passed 2 other workers when we walked in and they hadn't said anything, we also saw an older lady with her grandchild and she had a drink. It felt like she was targeting us as we were the only people of color, she proceeded to follow us out and watch us through the window. She was also berating us while we were leaving. The issue isn't the drink policy but the way she went about it felt very aggressive, racist and hostile.

They've carefully curating a wide variety of stories, accumulated so many sweet little goodies & knick knacks, & built a wonderful, irreplaceable community in Providence. They put a LOT of effort into highlighting BIPOC & queer authors in their collection. The range of genres & narratives - especially considering the tiny size of the store - is a masterclass in diverse inventory. The very best thing about Heartleaf, though, is the manager. She alone is worth a visit to the store. If she's napping, it's a cardinal sin to disturb her. You'll just have to come back another time to give her a scratch behind the ears. (Penny is the manager. Penny is also a cat. I promise I'm not randomly scratching humans behind the ears.) Thank you Caroline & Mads for everything you do. Long live Heartleaf!
