Alchemy of Movement - Fall 2025 showcase: the doll people

Alchemy of Movement

(38 reviews)

My love for Alchemy of Movement is so big that it's difficult to put into words…read more I moved to CO for grad school almost 10 years ago, and I was planning to leave at the end of my program until I found Alchemy. Alchemy has given me access to amazing dance, exercise, strength (both physical and emotional), increased confidence as a dancer and a human, experiences that have helped me tap into my own creativity, and some of my absolute favorite people whom I would be lost without. I want to give a special shout out to the owner, Ashley Patchen. She is one of the kindest, most driven, tenacious, hardworking, creative, silly, amazing people I know. Her vision for the studio is what has made Alchemy what it is today, and for that I am eternally grateful

I joined Alchemy of Movement less than a week ago and I am already in LOVE with their welcoming,…read morefun, warm, genuine and liberating energy. Every instructor and Ashley, the owner, are super friendly and they put you at ease when you step into the studio. You can tell that this isn't a typical fitness or dance studio where you come and go and don't get a chance to meet anyone. This is family and a MOVEMENT with a BIG MISSIOn that inspires everyone to be themselves, to express their unique quirks and personalities through movement and that you don't have to be a dancer or professionally trained at all in order to feel amazing about yourself and most importantly to just have fun!!! Thank you for creating this sanctuary, Ashley and thank to every instructor and member to contributing to the energy of this place.

I am trying to do new things. I am a traditionally horrible dancer, so I did some looking around…read moreand found the Boulder Swing Dance web site. Classes are cheap ($10 for a drop in class or $35 for a 4-part series) and they start frequently (a new session every month) so I took my chance and jumped in on the next beginner-level class that came up. This was Lindy Hop 1, which meets on Monday nights. Tonight was my first lesson, and I cannot wait to go back next week. I have never danced a real dance before in my life, but John and Shana did a great job explaining everything clearly enough that it always felt natural to move on to the next step. The atmosphere was really relaxed and everyone seemed to have a genuinely good time. It is certainly okay to attend these classes on your own. My friend and I went without partners and a couple of guys stuck around from an earlier class to even things out. Not a big deal at all. I was concerned about not having the comfort of a familiar partner, but that soon was relieved as the class is structured so that every follow dances with every lead at least once. And since it's a "rotate clockwise" arrangement, there's no need to worry that nobody will choose you to dance. You just get the next person in the circle, and then the next. This setup not only eases the awkwardness of choosing a partner, it gives you the opportunity to dance with several people, and all of them will have a slightly different style. You don't learn to dance with your date, you learn to dance with anybody. The studio was a bit hot and everyone got really sweaty but, since everybody was sweaty, it was okay. I highly recommend wearing something comfortable that will allow you to breathe. After just the first session in this series, I feel like I progressed from hopeless to kind of okay at this particular dance, which is way more than I had anticipated. Trying new things is awesome!

I agree with another reviewer. Super rude staff at the front. Classes move ridiculously slow…read more Instructors are decent but we need more options in Boulder for Lindy Hop.

Arthur Murray Dance Center

Arthur Murray Dance Center

This is a great place to dance. The owner (Isaac) and staff here (Rafia and Peyton) are always…read morewarm, encouraging and friendly. The Arthur Murray dance method is methodical and flexible. It can't be easy training so many different ages and skill levels to dance, but they manage to make everyone feel welcome and teach at the level you need. I was a ballet dancer growing up, so need a lot of instruction on ballroom style and technique, but can pick up dance steps quickly. My husband is a martial artist with absolutely zero dance experience. He has different strengths and challenges from me in learning to dance. Rafia manages to teach each of us at our levels without either of us being bored or frustrated. And we're always having fun and laughing in our lessons. The instructors are great in keeping it focused but fun and relaxed. We've been with the studio for 2 years now. The way this Arthur Murray works is, you pay for the private lessons, and as long as you do at least one every two weeks, you can go to unlimited group classes, which they typically have each night during the week (depending on your level, you might be able to attend 3-4 of them). When you start, an instructor will ask which dances you're interested in, if you know, and help you figure out where you want to start. They offer pretty much every ballroom dance under the sun. We're most interested in the latin dances, so have been learning Cha Cha, Tango, Argentine Tango, Salsa, Rumba, Merengue and Samba. We've also sprinkled in some Swing, Country, Waltz and Foxtrot just from attending group classes. They start with basic steps, and each dance has a syllabus, so you progress carefully, consistently and thoughtfully into more complex movements. They're great about COVID social distancing. Everyone is always wearing a mask correctly - students and teachers. If you're worried about being in public, they offer Zoom lessons, or you could just opt to do personal lessons rather than come to the groups (which is what we've been doing for months.) On a bigger picture, if you're thinking of learning ballroom dance, get out there and do it. I've wanted to for years but felt held back by time and cost. Now that I'm doing it, I so wish I had found a way to start earlier. It's a really therapeutic part of my week. I get to take time out for myself, connect with my husband (there's a lot of work in the simple act of leading and following), and train in something I hope will continue with us for a lifetime. Plenty of people aren't partnered and take lessons alone. The instructors are wonderful for that as well, and group classes, if you're comfortable with the idea of dancing with others, allow you to meet and practice with other people - both partnered and solo, as the instructors always give the option to each student on whether they want to switch partners or not. I cannot recommend this studio highly enough. Give it a try!

I've been dancing here for four years and I love it. Great teachers, nice people and lots of fun.read more
