After patronizing this hardware store for 21 years I have decided not to shop there anymore, unless it's an emergency and someone is twisting my arm. You used to be able to browse the store to find and compare items for yourself...sales help was available if you needed it. Now almost everything has to be fetched for you because most of the store's inventory is off limits. If you're not sure about an item or just want to look and compare for yourself, you're out of luck. The wait for service is very irritating. If you need to return an item, there's a restocking fee, even if all they have to do is turn around and place it on a shelf behind them. I think that charging a restocking fee is basically to discourage returns because you lose money, even for unopened items. Management is SURLY. They're not getting any more of my business, as I said, unless I have no choice. I can always walk 6 blocks to 23rd Street and buy from a professionally-run and customer-friendly national chain with a huge selection from which to choose. Avoid Nuthouse. read more

I came here last night because it was the closest hardware store and I LOVE that it's 24/7. I also love that this is one of the most well-stocked hardware store I've ever been to, it's great! I do agree to others that this place is sort of disorganized and it sucks that there are no prices tags..but there are scanners around the store. The service was pretty good actually! This place has everything you need with an extremely knowledgeable staff. I had to go in to get a repair kit for an inflatable mattress (don't ask) and the employee at the door knew exactly which aisle to send me to. I was in and out in less than 5 minutes. Review for key duplicates: I had two key duplicates made at Nuthouse hardware. Asked the nice woman at the cashier's desk. She took the keys to the back, and had them done in less than 5 minutes. The cost for two keys was less than four dollars. Took credit card even though the cost was so low. She mentioned that if the keys didn't work, we just had to bring the receipt back and they would re-make the keys. Fortunately both worked great. The only 24 hour hardware store in New York City. With that being said, obviously their prices are a reflection of their business hours. Of course they're going to have prices that are higher than Home Depot or Lowes, but where else are you going to find a dual flush valve on short notice, when most of the plumbing specialty stores in the city, are for the most part, closed on weekends? I just wish it wasn't double the price that you would normally pay at a hardware mega store. And not having a knowledgeable staff worker on the premises to assist me with finding the correct sizes regarding the pipe fitting, and having to wait almost 2 hours for the right person to assist me, is really weird for a 24 hour hardware store. I'm beyond fortunate to live on the same block as the Nut House (or the Nuthouse, if you misspelled the name like I did when I first searched). Only after several times going there did I realize it has two huge floors - the bottom's like Home Depot and the top's like Bed Bath and Beyond. I've had wonderful service there with no one flinching when they've had to walk me to the product I needed. Given that it's a 24 hour place you get some WEIRD customers going through there especially at odd hours, but just NYC-weird, not run-for-your-life weird. How could anyone give this place a bad review? This place is clutch. It always comes through. When it doubt, head to Nuthouse. It is a nuthouse though - just head to the second floor! It's like a mini bed bath and beyond up there. I could spend hours (ok, maybe minutes) browsing the aisles and looking at all the junk... um, I mean useful stuff! You never know what you might find. The Nuthouse is an awesome store to have in my neighborhood. They have everything that you could ever need to do home improvements. I live a few blocks away and it's like having a Home Depot and a Bed Bath and Beyond all in one very close by. The staff has always been very helpful in helping me find what I am looking for, from picking a curtain rod to choosing the right screws for a project. The store is very well organized, with many floors filled to capacity with merchandise. Returns were easy too; I went back to the store a day or two later to get a full refund on an unopened package. These people told me they had a part I needed when they did not. I told them I was going to have to travel for about an hour to get to them so I asked if they could set it aside for me, which they said they would do. Even offered to pay for it ahead of time just to confirm. When I arrived I learned that they never actually had the part. I showed up and asked what they were holding for me, and what they handed to me was the wrong item, clearly marked. Using what they gave me would've been dangerous. When I asked the woman who I had spoken with about the part over the phone why she had misrepresented what they had she simply turned away. I had other options which were a little less convenient but which I would have gone to if these people hadn't lied to me and try to foist off the wrong item on me. Small on the outside and chock full of absolutely everything you need to do WHATEVER it is you want, or could dream, to do. Maybe it was beginner's luck but i spouted a list of items needed including a 1 1/2" steel saw bit clamps, electric wire (light guage), a 2' x 3' piece of plywood, a dremel tool, and a T square- yes, i'm a part time safe cracker... The gentleman who helped me was patient, courteous, and took me to every level of this palace of hardware in search of each item. Just go. I came here last Monday at 1am after my toilet was clogged. My Morton Williams and Rite Aid both did not have a toilet plunger. I looked for a hardware store that was open at 1am on Yelp, and I found Nuthouse Hardware. It was open and a very very nice woman helped me find the perfect toilet plunger. There were many types of toilet plungers and she told us which one was the best. It was a very quick experience. The prices at the store were also not overpriced too. Highly recommended! read more

I was looking forward to my visit here seeing the review are great. I walked in and was astounded by the inventory which was sort of insanity. I shopped around for a few things then tried to get to the core of the reason I stopped in the first place. Instead I stood around virtually helping myself seeing as none of the numerous people of staff could/would bother to help. One guy was nice enough when I approached him but his limited english limited his effectiveness. He passed me onto another guy who was so busy (helping a line of people) that I ended up just leaving after waiting 20 min. The guy apologized a few times which was nice. Looking back it wasn't the fact that I had to wait, it was the fact that there were numerous employees there that wouldn't help. Maybe I went on an off day? I will try again but this time for a stop and shop and not to have anything custom done (i.e. paint, keys, etc). read more

My heat went out on Xmas Eve last year and these ogres refused to make eye contact while I tried to exchange a totally dysfunctional space heater they sold me (and assured me, on my second visit within the space of an hour ON XMAS EVE, actually worked just fine; I refused to leave until they plugged it in to see for themselves it was worthless). I think the whole place is pretend to be a hardware store, with the main business is to sell drugs. Nuthouse is the key in the real meaning. Today I experienced a surreal scene - went there to get a legit purchase. Two people in front of me are almost yelling at each other. I ask them to low their voices. In my view they were either drunk or under influence. These people did not even noted my request, but the senior sale person working in the store told me that " I should not bother customers, and that I have a problem". This particular intervention make me think that the senior sales person is directly responsible for the delirious conditions of these people (it seems they already spent quite some time there). They do not honor exchanges, without charging you a stocking fee. I purchased a bulb, asked if I could return/exchange if needed; they confirmed I could return/exchange anytime, so long as I had the receipt. Being that this is the only 24 hour hardware store in NY..I had to go to experience it myself. 1:15 a.m. My friend and I are wandering around NY trying to think of some random adventure to go on. I look through my NFT book for something random and open. I notice a hardware store. I think "Wow this is random...Lets's totally go!" 2:00 a.m. After much wandering around trying to find this place we finally find it. We knock on the door and the owner either thinks we're crazy, drunk, or possibly both. (Might I add that there is a security guy there) He lets us in and I was sooooo pumped going up and down the aisles looking at stuff. Possibly one of the more random things I've done in the city and was totally worth it. Funny thing is I actually bought something there, mainly so I could say I did. Who wants Home Depot ginormous, overpriced stuff when you can come here and have fun just finding stuff that you don't really need but can't resist buying? This place is like the toy store for adults when they actually need stuff for their apt/car/office/etc. I have a small mouse problem in my apt and found this place to satisfy my rodent needs. Nuthouse indeed! This is sort of an off-the-wall kind of hardware store, big but not commercialized. The people who work there are friendly and the lady who works upstairs seem to be lonely and is apt to talk to you a lot if you let her. Apparently this is the only open 24 hours hardware store in the city! And I live a block away from it and never knew! If only I knew about this place when I first moved in and had to haul all of my stuff from Home Depot on 23rd st... Downstairs is a typical hardware store and upstairs has an eclectic assortment of household items. Some of which include: - very cute cloth shopping bags - a million different kinds of wine openers and spill catchers - window sticker decorations and magnets - fruit bowls, ceramic bowls, trays - a lot of things for your pets I wandered in and out and grabbed a few random things that I never even knew I needed until I saw it and thought HOW DID I EVER LIVE without it. I LOVE the fact that it's open 24/7, so on those sleepless nights as I'm wrestling with a clogged sink, I know where I can get help. read more

I was going to write a glowing review for this place... nice friendly staff... wide selection of hardware and convenient neighborhood location... but after what just happened, I'm thinkin twice about it... I called to inquire about their inventory and a man whose English wasn't very good told me that the customer rep I was looking for wasn't there. So I asked if he could help me-- to which he responded by telling me to hold, placing the receiver down, and waiting around for about 10-15 minutes before coming back and purposefully hanging up on me! First, it's a hardware store so complete that it beats out Home Depot for availability of hardware tools and parts. Second, if you're stocking a Manhattan kitchen and pantry, it's definitely worth a trip to see their generous stock of kitchen items, shelving, and cleaning products - often cheaper than most local chain stores. And finally, you really cannot beat the fact that it's open 24/7. The sales assistance could sometimes be a bit more accurate (it varies in quality/expertise), and it's not like you can renovate an entire apartment using supplies from here, but for the most part you can't go too wrong shopping here. It's only real competition is outside of the city. Worth at least one exploratory visit if you are below 100th Street. read more

Purchase one large bag of plant soil, 2 cubic feet of plant soil at home depot for $8.00 here they charge $24.99 for the same exact item and charge triple the market rate. the weekend manager is hostile ineffective and said today, Saturday, May 13, 2017 to buy from home depot rather than avoiding being report to the Better business bureau and solving the problem and overcharge. not good business in neighborhood during hurricane sandy they refused to refund duck tape. Price gauging is illegal since seasonal item. recommend to all with poor experiences price gauging to file with the better business bureau rather than bring matter to mangers attention. This hardware store is conveniently open 24 hours a day, however once you walk in its is a complete mess there. Even the staff themselves can not find things, that bad the mess is here. Some of the associates are very rude, and have no idea about basic things you ask them. They need major improvement on customer service. Most of the staff sits around chatting to one another. I bought a drill here, when purchased I didn't take a close look, the packaging was open. When I finally tested it after 2-3 weeks, I realized that it was very weak, plus the battery life was very short. I took it back, but was refused a refund. Needed a key duplicated. Felt pretty comfortable going into the first hardware store I passed on my walk home from work. Nuthouse provided me with a quick LOL over its namesake, but, unfortunately, that'd be the end of Nuthouse doing me any favors. Quick key duplication process somehow took three visits to get right. To me, that's pretty unacceptable. To Nuthouse, that may be best practice. Whole drawn-out process made me really question my current career path and had me briefly contemplating a life as a locksmith so I could do simple tasks like this myself. I tried having a rational conversation with the guy behind the counter suggesting that he give me my money back due to the extended inconvenience, but I quickly retracted and left after determining that this hardware employee who couldn't duplicate a key would not be able to grasp my advice on standard moral code and human-to-human virtuousness. read more

This place is great, in my opinion. It's convenient if you live in the area, it's open 24 hours, it has a wide variety of things you might need from hardware to dishwashing soap to kitchen utensils, and it's not too expensive. The staff is generally nice too and will help you in finding things and whatnot. I go here to get keys copied and to buy things needed around the house and it's a great resource to have in the neighborhood. read more
