This restaurant was recommended in my guidebook so I was excited to check it out. Especially because they serve North Brazilian cuisine, something I had never tried prior. North Brazilian food is known for having African influences. Rather than going with an entree, I decided to try a few appetizers. I went with the three empanadas (I'm blanking on the Brazilian term for this): crab, fish, and duck. Unfortunately, the spices that were used just weren't to my liking. To the point where I couldn't finish the appetizers---a very rare occurrence for me. I also got the Acai bowl which I did enjoy. Granola in Brazil is different so it was a treat to try this out too. Definitely don't leave Brazil without having some fresh Acai! They were playing the World Cup game on a projector while we were there which is a nice touch.

The acai here is pure acai, unlike the ice-blended options at most places. As a result, it is creamier and more liquid. It also does not use guava syrup that most places add. Instead, it adds only a little sugar. We also had the vatapa (photo attached), which is an Afro-Brazilian dish made of shrimp, ground nuts, bread, coconut milk, etc. I did not like the sticky consistency of it (it's not like an Indian curry as I expected). I also hear the pastels are good.

They have the best açaí bowls, real açaí and not that sugary stuff you get other places. You have a choice of what kind of açaí to get: Pure without the addition of ingredients With Sugar or Guarana Syrup With Organic Sugar With Coconut Sugar With honey You have a choice of Brazil nuts, roasted cashews, farinha, and granola. I ordered the açaí with coconut sugar and granola. It was so delicious and refreshing and the granola added a nice texture and crunch to it. I also ordered a Guaraná Jesus which is a pink tinted soda that is usually only found in São Luís, Brazil. And I added an Unha de Caranguejo (Fried Flaked Crab Meat) it was excellent. Very chili ambience and the staff was friendly and accommodating even if they didn't speak English they had menus in both English and Portuguese and were helpful regardless of the language barrier. Probably the thing that I want to come back and try is #54 Açaí w/ Fried Puppy (Açaí c/ Filhote Frito). At least according to the English translation menu. They are known for their tacacá soup as well and unfortunately I didn't get to try it, I would recommend a visit here to try real northern Brazilian cuisine. So just be aware that there are 2 restaurants, one is a casual take out counter place and the other (Gourmet) is a sit down restaurant.

I would argue that this establishment has one of the best acai bowls in all of Brazil. I always order a bowl with 2 sides of granola and it is delicious and filling. Super convenient for the lucky people who live on Barra Beach. Golden Sucos is always nicely air conditioned, and the menu is extensively, with a lot of healthy options. There is SO much to look at to order, it often takes me way too long. Great selection of juices, açaí, sandwiches, etc. The service is actually pretty quick, too. But I took off a star because, in the tradition of team service here in Rio, getting the check and getting the correct check and getting change is a consistent problem here. We've gotten the wrong check multiple times. Ask for the key at the counter to go to the bathroom, which is next to the pharmacy, and very clean.

It's better to eat where the locals eat: Big Polis proves me right. I ate here three times during my week in Leblon, mostly because I was assured high quality food and fantastic service, from the English menu to the friendly and helpful staff. Oh and the food? It was fantastic. Try the Filet Mignon burger with a fried egg and pineapple. And get an acai with banana and cashew nuts. The burger had a rich bun, the filet was almost gourmet restaurant quality (cooked right, medium to medium-rare) and even the fries were plentiful, flavorful and had a rich texture. I found myself looking for acai with cashew elsewhere, and only seemed to find it at Big Polis. All in all, I was served a fantastic meal with a fantastic view of Leblon all for about $R42. It would be much less if you got a "regular" sandwich, but the Filet Mignon was absolutely worth it!

Pao D Mais is it! It is a two part establishment, one part is a little bakery and convenient store; which is great for your morning coffee and bread. The second part is a self service restaurant, or as we call them in the States "buffets". I eat lunch here at least four times a week with my wife. The food is prepared fresh daily and is a nice selection for this little quiet place. There is an assortment of finger foods, fresh vegetable dishes, the mandatory rice and beans, and a generous selection of meats; everything from fish to chicken hearts (something I still will not put in my mouth). The only reason I am discounting them a star is because the restaurant portion is not open for dinner, it closes at 3pm. Even though I am comfortable driving now we still eat most of our lunches here, it's more economically reasonable for us than cooking since we have different food tastes.
