These shaved ice are wonderful and unique in that they are like ice creams yet very light and without a heavy bulky feeling of making you too full. And each only $5 (+tax) to enjoy in a cool establishment that was serving many customers very quickly in a polite manner. Went in to Nu Cafe with my family last Friday, 7/22/22. Ordered two Durian mountains with boba and mango on the side. It was refreshing since it was quite warm outside that day. But, I do wish it had more of the Durian flavor. The flavor was not strong enough. As for the experience, it was fine. The place was busy but it was a given. We come here a lot and the shaved ice is really a treat worth coming back for. The only thing I would have to complain about is how the male cashier that evening pronounced the name my mom wrote for our orders, Yzzy (pronounced like Izzy), which is my nickname. Instead of that pronunciation I indicated above, he pronounced it as "jizzy" which is so inappropriate. To top it off, I was looking in his direction when he said it to his coworker and he was smiling. It was not funny to me. I normally put Anna, because I am well aware that people can mispronounce Yzzy. I'm normally someone who can laugh along with jokes like that. But, not in a public setting where others can hear it. You basically fill out a clip board for your custom order. Add things such as popping bubbles, fruits and condense milk to liven up the already tasty and flavorful ice. The shaved ice is creamy and delicious and comes in many different flavors. One thing to note is for shaved ice orders, they make you fill out a form to place the order. However the form is at the register and they expect you to have it filled out to order. So be prepared!! They also offer many flavors of bubble teas, milk teas, slushees, and smoothies. My wife and I go here on the weekends for our two favorite drinks: The Half 'n Half (without pudding & extra tapioca, my personal favorite!) and the Taro smoothie. I have not been able to find a drink similar to the Half 'n Half, which has milk, brown sugar, and honey, anywhere else. This is a cool trendy spot alongside all the other dessert places by Bellaire. This is a far cry from the typical shaved ice desserts made from ice chips and topped with sugary syrups. These desserts were made from cylinders of ice cream shaved into ribbons and piled high on a plate served with plenty of fresh fruits and flavorful drizzles like condensed milk or chocolate. The mounds of shaved ice tasted like creamy ice cream with a very fluffy and airy texture. The green tea flavored ice had a bitter but refreshing taste if you don't have that much of a sweet tooth. Overall, this was the trend for everyone as there were lots of tables waiting for shaved ice. At this point were hoping the dessert would be worth it. The way you order it is kind of like which wich where you make the selections but the directions are way more complicated than then need to be. I mean at the end of the day you can make whatever you want but they will charge you extra. So we wanted to stay within the rules for a large shaved ice you get either 2 fruits or 3 non fruit toppings along with 1 flavor of ice, and 1 syrup. We got the green tea with honey dew and mango with condensed milk on top. The way it's shaved just looks ugly. It just doesn't look appetizing and it was falling over before it made it back to my table. We also ordered a regular mango flavored ice with mochi and egg custard. My friend and I didn't like either flavor, we couldn't tell if it was the flavor or the texture, we ended up smashing it down and it resembled for of a ice cream feel and it tasted a little better but overall still nothing amazing. At this point we were thinking maybe we just ordered the wrong items, so we made one more dessert out of vanilla ice, with oreos and m&ms. Recently I asked my friend on a cold Houston wintry day (yeah, it was probably 50 degrees outside- summertime to you Iowans) if he likes Nu ice. To which he promptly responded, "I'm Taiwanese. I'm always disappointed by the measly pile I get after foregoing two of my other toppings. When you arrive, you fill out a clip board with all of the options for how you want your shaved ice prepared. They have quite a few flavors ranging from green tea to coconut to plain vanilla. There are about 6-8 booths that can seat 4 and one table that runs basically the entire length of the place that can seat about 20. It was a Friday evening and the place was packed! After waffling between durian and green tea we placed our order, and only a minute later we got our big, delicious, beautiful looking plate of shaved ice (of course I had to get the durian) and toppings (red beans, grass jelly and lychee jelly). Luckily, a couple were leaving as we were looking for seats. The shaved ice....O.M.G. There's a prominent durian flavor and so creamy. According to their order form, durian among the other fruit shaved ice are made from REAL fruits. Unlucky for me, my cousin also likes durian so I did have to share half of the shaved ice with him. Every once in a while I'll deviate from Star Sno-Ice or Juice Box and stop by Nu Cafe for their shaved ice. They've changed it up a bit since I have first stopped in. It's a bit more organized and they've stopped carrying hot foods altogether, I guess so they can focus on desserts and drinks only. This spot is known for their artisan shaved ice, a popular Taiwanese dessert where blocks of flavored ice get spun and shaved into a plate topped with your choice of delectable sweets and a drizzle of syrup. You order by going up to the counter and getting a piece of paper and circling your choices of how you want it made. You can choose two different sizes, "hill" or "mountain," but in layman's terms: small or big. You circle one flavor for the shaved iced, choice of two toppings, and choice of one syrup. The shaved ice is good and very refreshing, especially on a hot summer's day. There is an endless amount of different combinations to choose from. Asian-style toppings, chocolate, fruits, jellies, you name it, they probably have it. They also have some unique dessert drinks and they are a bit different from the ones you can find at boba shops. I had a Rainbow Mango and it was a sweet, satisfying drink with lots of different items added into it. I really liked it. =) This place is a great stop to make after dinner in Chinatown. I must say, Nu Cafe has revolutionized the shaved ice game in Houston. Instead of the plain ol' shaved ice (just frozen water) that only gets its flavor by putting layers of condensed milk, brown sugar, ice cream, fruits, and whatever other toppings is provided on top, Nu Cafe's shaved ice is already flavored! To paint a clearer picture, it's like taking a block of frozen ice cream, and shaving it down like a snow-cone, except it's served on a plate. It's not exactly like ice cream, but more like frozen milk, and it sure sounds a lot better than frozen water! The shaved ice come in a variety of flavors, including but not limited to green tea, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, mango, taro, etc. My favorite is green tea :) It comes in two sizes, both with a generous portion for the price that you pay. Each size come with a default number of toppings. Any more toppings would cost extra. Toppings include a splendid selection of jellies and fruits. The only downside I've experienced is that the fruit is not always fresh. Last but not least, you can't forget the condensed milk!! I'm not a big fan of sweet stuff, and condensed milk is pretty sweet. But you just can't fully enjoy shaved ice without pouring condensed milk all over it! read more

Although, we got two hot entrees, we were only able to get 1 sample. Lame. My meal was pretty good. It was flavorful, but there was a bit too much sauce in my rice. There were pieces of pork fat and a little bit of pork in my meal. Too much rice, not enough pork. It included a boil, odd tasting egg and Chinese broccoli in there. The coffee snowflake ice sample was pretty darn good! It's slices of ice that is soft and is stiff competition with shaved ice. The coffee sample was so good that my bf and I decided to get the real thing. We got the milk snowflake with egg pudding and mochi. Once I tasted the milk snowflake, it reminded me when I was in Vietnam. You see, when I was visiting during middle school, I drank milk there and it tasted the same as this snowflake! They had served milk in a bag. The egg pudding was alright. It wasn't soft and chewy, but the mochi was pretty good. I thought it was pretty expensive for $6.50. This place is a must when in Chinatown, and they offer a vast variety of different flavors and fresh fruit toppings. I've tried both strawberry and green tea, and I definitely prefer the green tea. The strawberry is a bit too artificial tasting, and has a strong resemblance in taste to strawberry milk. (Ick!) The regular is usually enough for two people, but if you have more people in your party, shoot for the large. I personally don't think the food is that great, but the snack sampler is worth trying if you're going to be staying there for a while. Whether you get from the special drinks list or anything outside of that (like my girlfriend), you can't go wrong. Even my most disliked drink from here is still decent. You have two different options for the ice cream: hill size and mountain size. The mountain size can easily be split for three people and you get two side toppings plus a drizzle. So my friends have been raving about this Nu Cafe and the snowflake ice. I was curious to see what this new icy dessert was about. I seriously was blown away with the thinly shaved ice. It's not quite like the shave ice you get at Star Snow Ice or Juice Box. I had the privilege of trying the coconut and special reserve durian flavored and they were delicious! I love how it just melts in my mouth. It was also nice meeting the owner. She was very friendly and appreciative of all the customers. I've also tried the milk ice with strawberries with condensed milk on top! I recommend that as well. The green tea flavor is very good as well. The snowflake ice is good to me because its not sweet and natural tasting. I would recommend getting the egg pudding as a topping.
