Unlike most high street pubs the Penny farthing does not use its location to hike it`s prices up and keeps them not at the inexpensive but at a decent mid range. The penny farthing has a very good staff who will serve you with a smile as well as stopping for a chat even when the pub is very busy they always find the time to smile or chat, probably because unlike many of the pubs close by they actually employ enough staff! A real pub with a great atmosphere and it also has its own enclosed smoking area out the back with very nice and comfortable seating, tables and heating for those chilly Kirkcaldy nights. There is a bar area and a disco area with a large dance floor, the dance floor area is where the club comes alive but the bar area is nice to relax in too and it has views out over the high street where you can watch the other clubbers making their way from pub to pub. There are different seating arrangements so take your time to walk around the pub to find something suitable. There is free WiFi available, which is a little rare in Kirkcaldy. I didn't like my tuna melt, but I put that down to personal taste. We spoke to the staff about it and they handled it all very well. The entrance is very deceptive with only about 6 foot of frontage onto the main road making the place look tiny from the outside. However the door opens onto the bar area which is very traditional and well stocked with a real coal fire. This area can be quite busy since the bar is very popular with regulars. Food is served to the rear of the bar with a seperate dining room as well. I have eat in The Ship many many times and I have never been disppointed. The chef, Pat, cooks all the food from scratch so he knows all the ingredients, excellent for anyone in your party with a food intolerance. The prices are very reasonable with many "bar bowl" deals on the go as well. The range of drinks on offer is as large and comprehensive as you would find in any City bar but with small town prices. Music is played from the bar "sound system" with live entertainment on offer a few evenings a month at weekends. There is also Sunday quiz night, too hard for me. Because of the building layout you may not be as detached from patrons enjoying a drink when you are dining as you may like. Even when in the dining room "smokers" often walk past on their way to the external smoking area. I only felt the need to mention this so as to keep the whole review as objective as possible. The Ship attracts a mature clientelle since there isn't a pool table or juke box therefore unacceptable behaviour or language is rarely seen or heard. Families are very welcome. I have eat in many bars and restaurants around the country at all price brackets and this place is still one of my faves. Excellent food, beer and value for money.
