Such a great story but apparently not true. On my second visit I was given a second and probably more reliable tale of the origin of the name. Visit the shop to find out which story you prefer. The shop is located in the small village of Proctorsville, Vt. It's easy to find in a big yellow building. The yarns are primarily from local spinners, their sheep and llamas. The yarn quality and selection are both outstanding. An excellent knitter always seems to to be there to give you advice and help you get started.

No acknowledgement of this possible new customer until I started looking through magazines right in front of the table the worker was sitting at. When I said I was enjoying the shop, just a nod and back to ignoring me while there were other 'regulars' sitting around the table and talking. Not a very friendly atmosphere, Not a friendly welcome, not even a friendly goodbye. Unfortunately not a small business I want to purchase from or visit again.

We were walking down the street this week and saw this shop. My wife became excited seeing this store from the outside so we ventured in. No one else was in the shop at the time except for the woman working. As we walked in with our happy 18 month old, the door closed behind us, not a glance, not a hello, nothing to acknowledge our presence. Fine, it happens. Perhaps it was assumed we were just tourists who weren't going to buy anything so we were ignored. Not acceptable, but again it happens. However when my wife has 2 items in her hands ready to purchase, has a question, is ignored and another customer is greeted and helped ahead of us while we are being still ignored it warrants a review on Yelp. I support local businesses but I don't support bad customer service and pretentiousness. Both of which seemed to be abundant from the woman working there. I will not only make it my duty to never visit here again but to make sure that every person I know that visits Woodstock never sets foot in this store.

I attended a flax class at the shop today. I have been spinning for two decades, and still learned…read morelots of new and interesting things about flax. She started by discussing planting and growing the flax, and knew a lot about the details and minutia about growing, picking, drying, processing and producing flax fiber for spinning. Then we discussed distaffs and the actual spinning of the fiber to produce linen yarn. She knew a lot about the history of growing flax for fiber, background and history about spinning flax and the uses for flax fiber besides spinning. Highly patient and knowledgeable instructor. Kudos to the awesome teacher!

Walking into a craft stores, I've often felt intimidated. I've held onto the idea that I could…read morenever be a person who makes things! No one in my family sews, knits or needlepoints, and I hadn't been taught elsewhere. Yet, I've always wanted to create something with my hands. Fortunately, Mary Margaret, the owner of Notion Fabric & Craft encouraged me to confront my fear of the sewing machine! It doesn't hurt that her store is NOT overwhelming like many craft stores I've been to. Though she is fully stocked with beautiful fabrics, yarns, patterns, crafting accessories and tools, stepping inside Notion feels like you have been invited into someone's home studio. I have taken two of Mary Margaret's classes. The first one was the first time I ever touched a sewing machine. I left with a beautiful tote bag that I am able to boast that I made. In the second class, she taught us how to make a shirt. Mary Margaret is a wonderful, patient teacher who supports you in all of your mini-milestones and successes, as well as your...uh...learning opportunities along the way. I particularly appreciated her talk about clothing sizes in stores and how all of our bodies are unique and fluctuate from time to time. We can't be defined by someone else's size or idea of a size! The classroom upstairs is a bright and inviting community space. Mary Margaret offers tea and coffee for added coziness. Notion Fabric and Craft is a much needed addition to Montpelier for expert crafters and novices alike. Do yourself a favor and take a class taught by Mary Margaret!
