I went to other churches and people were nice and friendly (as all churches tend to be), but I never felt like I fit in..oftentimes, people have already formed their cliques or were already overwhelmingly big to really find your niche... However, when i came to this church, people do more than the "hi and bye and hope to see you next sunday and have a good week"...they want to get to know about you and really absorb you into their community. The music is phenomenal and their service is always inspiring. Our pastor uses films/videos in his sermons and really touches upon relevant day-to-day issues that affect our lives - they can even be really funny at times. Our pastor has a great sense of humor and faith in God, which makes him so relatable and easy to talk to. There's also a great young adults group that has a mixture of students and working professionals that really gets you connected to others going through the same questions/struggles you are going to. This is a really great place for people with all different spiritual levels and walks in life, whether you've been a Christian your whole life or if you are wondering who God is, you will find acceptance, love, and support here.

I mean, there's diverse, and then there's a small church that represents about 20 different countries diverse, (20 might be a little bit of an exaggeration but the real number is not far off). The second thing I noticed was that the music was phenomenal. Some of the singers are fantastic and some of the musicians are top notch, especially the pianist, who went to Berklee College of Music. The pastor is spectacular as well. He's always willing to talk and will probably take you out to lunch. During the after church lunch/refreshment thing, he makes an effort to reach out to everyone in the congregation. His messages get to the heart of the gospel and he knows what separates the gospel from religion. He'll motivate you to grow closer to Jesus without sugar coating the Bible like those that preach the prosperity gospel. Not only is the congregation diverse, but it's super welcoming. Almost overwhelmingly welcoming. My first experience here was awesome. I slipped into the church and sat at the back and went unnoticed, (or so I thought). Then I went to the after church lunch thing and sat down. While eating my food, I was greeted by about 4 different people. Each one was super excited to see me and were truly interested in what I had to say. The pastor came and invited to be a part of different groups at the church. If you are looking for a place where you can sit at the back of the church without being noticed/greeted then this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a Christian community to be a part of that truly needs you and wants you no matter your background, then this is the place for you.

Like most UU churches services start with the lighting of the chalice, except the cutesy rhyme and childish hand gestures of this congregation's ritual made me expect any minute the minster would pull a wire loop out of her robes and start chanting "Romper Bomper Stomper Boo...." The rest of the service consists of what could best be described as a "no-talent show" consisting of poorly rehearsed poetry readings and the worst musical ensembles this side of the "Gong Show." The service culminates in an uninspiring, vapid, and superficial sermon. One can experience a more mature and inspiring hour on a Sunday morning by popping in a South Park DVD.

I have wanted to come to this magnificent church since 1968 when I first learned about Unitarian…read morephilosophy and my journey away from Catholic dogma began. It's been a long but wonderful road. I am thankful for my membership at the First Unitarian in Philadelphia for many years and since I moved to Washington DC, at All Souls Unitarian. Still, this magnificent building is no different than going to Santiago de Compostela for a Roman Catholic and worth of a pilgrimage. This is the Unitarian Church that made it all happen in the world of Liberal religion and humanistic faith. Although the actual edifice has changed, within its confines, laid in 1729, the American Unitarian Church was founded. This was the worship center for Ralph Waldo Emerson, attended by David Thoreau, Pickering, and a Who's Who of our Founding Fathers. It was the home church of William Ellery Channing, who ministered there for almost 20 years. It was also one of the first sites of rebellion against the British, the site of Massachusetts's ratification of the Constitution, and the site of the first petition of 1788 for abolition of slavery. In modern times, it was also the site of the first legal same sex wedding in the United States in 2004. Like its sister church at All Souls in Washington, the edifice is patterned after St. Martin in the Fields in England. The 16 massive Tiffany stained glass windows surround the New England-style box pews of solid American chestnut where families would worship and keep away from Winter drafts. The service today was especially powerful. it was titled "No sanction for Bigotry" and was derived from George Washington's letter to the first Jewish synagogue in the US in Truro, Rhode Island, in which our Founding Father uttered these same words. The sermon was co-delivered by a Muslim imam and together, the Imam and the Reverend Kim K. Crawford Harvie delivered a rebuke to the radical philosophy of exclusion and hate proposed by many political pundits. The service was well attended and following the service, I was able to meet and chat with many of the parishioners. It was indeed a wonderful experience.

My friends and I left this church after attending & serving in various capacities for many years…read more None of us wanted to leave. In fact, we stayed for as long as we did because we were looking for any possible reason to stay. Yet, in spite of all the feedback we gave, we felt like our experiences (of discrimination) were minimized and brushed off repeatedly in the 'spirit of forgiveness.' Confronting leaders one-on-one proved even less effective; we were told to be more understanding of others' ignorance, to lower our expectations with regards to general church dynamics, and to also consider not "crying so much." We felt like the worst was assumed about us, in order that leaders could continue to believe the best about themselves. While we do not blame any leader individually, we do pray that the pastors and elders at Aletheia may remember daily how easy it is to be led astray by personal pain and brokenness, by pride and a knowledge that so easily puffs up; and to remember that every sheep in their congregation is a child of God to be respected and loved and listened to; that every person's voice matters.
