We found the Falls of Foyers 100% on accident, but I'm so glad we did!…read more It's a bit of the beaten path-- a ways off a side road off the B road on the east side of Loch Ness. You get to see some Highland Cattle (aka fluffy cows) on the drive in. There was plenty of parking at at the top. The hike to the top viewing point is short and not too steep, but I'd still make sure to have good shoes, and be careful if you have limited mobility at all. The stairs and trails are very well-maintained, but still a bit uneven, and there isn't always a railing. The hike to the lower viewing point was steeper, but well worth the effort. The trails past this viewing point are quite pretty as well, and lead to great views of a river leading into the Loch. We ended up turning around after a bit because we were short on time, but there's a longer loop you can do that is likely gorgeous. Keep an eye out for red squirrels, as well as plaques with poetry and explanation about the falls. Don't rush when you're driving through the Highlands; definitely take the time to follow signs pointing vaguely to a waterfall so you get to see incredible views like these.

The River Moriston furiously flows past the town's two bridges and pours itself over several sets…read moreof huge boulders on its way to empty into Loch Ness - and it makes for some beautiful little waterfalls! Especially when you catch the angle of the older, double-arched 19th century bridge set within the newer single-arch bridge. This waterfall is such a hidden gem. If you didn't know it was there already, I'm sure you'd drive right by it. It's very unassuming and not obvious at all from the road. I was on a very busy day tour and luckily our guide took us here as one of the "bathroom stops" haha! Unfortunately I only had about 15 minutes to explore. The trail is very short - it only takes about 2-3 minutes to reach this part of the falls from the parking lot. But this short trail will definitely have you feeling like you just stepped into the Shire from LOTR lol! And when you get to the main falls viewing area, there's even this neat little stone house that gives you some awesome viewing angles! Apparently the dam above the falls gets opened up on Tuesdays, making for an even more dramatic waterfall with more water crashing down the rocks. And I also read that you can see salmon jumping up the river in season! The parking lot has free public bathrooms and they're very well kept. The trail itself is uneven in places with lots of mud and tree roots so be aware. I sure hope I get to come back someday and spend more time here! The trail goes on further into the woods along the river and I read there are several more falls along the way. I loved it!

They switched out road tires for trek tires based on the trip I was taking, lights, high vis, and helmet with no extra charge, I hired high quality panniers that fit all my gear, and the bicycle was in perfect condition. The team is friendly, took time to understand my needs and genuinely seemed to thoroughly love and intimately know the details of cycling in the highlands. Even if you have a nice touring bike, the faff of bike train reservations makes renting in Inverness here a really good option. My daily hybrid commuter cycle was not going to cut it for my trip so I rented but I watched friends from London struggle on every leg of their train journey to get their touring bikes to their destinations, while I dropped this rental off and was back on my merry way. Hearing that they do a bicycle taxi service when I returned the bike opened up new route possibilities outside of the train routes as well. Can't recommend highly enough.

Glen Affric is frequently referred to as "the most beautiful glen in Scotland" - and this is truly…read moreone of the most magical places I've ever been. I might even go so far as to say it's the most beautiful glen (valley) I've ever seen! It's deep in the Highlands with only one narrow road passing through it and it's largely undeveloped which has allowed it to remain pretty wild. The mighty River Affric rushes through the glen and is quite wide and powerful. There are numerous lochs, some very large, and countless waterfalls! The plants surrounding the trails are so interesting- providing a rainbow of color - a lot of deep reds, along with yellows and greens against the backdrop of the deep brown waters - just glorious! This glen holds the third largest area of ancient Caledonian pinewoods in Scotland, consisting mostly of Scots Pines which have grown here in some form or another since the last ice age! The Forestry Commission has worked hard to "rewild" the area with native plants and trees and root out the invasive species and its had marvelous results - native wildlife is thriving and the area is recovering from heavy tree harvesting activities of years past. We visited on an eco tour with the Rabbies tour company as the roads can be quite difficult for American drivers (lol) - the tour was fantastic and while we spent a good bit of time here, it just wasn't enough bc it was so amazing. But we had plenty of time for a few hikes and some exploring. And we even saw some wandering sheep on the way out that apparently weren't supposed to be that deep into the woods haha! We stopped and did a short hike around Dog Falls but moved on and spent most of our time at the end of the maintained road where there's parking and picnic tables and some really great trails. The first trail we did took us up to the Memorial Cairn for expansive 360 degree views - fairly easy hike - some incline and muddy but doable. Trails are all surprisingly well maintained. The views are dramatic and words could never do them justice! We also did another short hike down by the rushing River Affric - easy and so worth it. If you're in the Highlands and able to visit Glen Affric, I can't recommend it enough! It's pretty close to Inverness and so worth it!

During our visit to Scotland in October, the only thing that Nick wanted to do was to do a fishing trip! Booking was very simple, and Roz was super friendly! Wes picked us up, and I was SUPER excited that his dog Brock was there for the journey. They deserve 5 stars for Brock alone! To say that we had a good time is an understatement. The trip taught me that I'm pretty awful at fly fishing, but it really improved my fishing skills. I OBVIOUSLY caught more fish than Nick and was super excited about that. Wes really made sure that we caught something. Everything from the gear, to lunch, to the scenery was perfect. I would really recommend that people wanting a unique Scottish fishing experience should check this out. It was our favorite part of our whole vacation!

This is a great park in which to take a leisurely stroll. Accessed via footbridges on either bank,…read morethe heavily treed area is well bestowed with walking paths. There is even a surprise appearance by Nessie on one of the pathways (Nessie made from a log, that is). Mainly, however, this park is a great place to enjoy the beauty of the Ness River and the wooded surroundings. The park is accessed following the riverside trail downriver (south) from city centre until you reach the footbridge that crosses to the islands. We walked the west side of the river to get there and the east side back. Of course, you can so this in reverse if you prefer as there is indeed a similar bridge on the east side of the river as well. If you are in Inverness, this is worthwhile, especially in good weather in the summer when sundown is not until 10-ish PM. You can do this in the evening without taking time from your daytime activities. It's only about a 15-minute walk from town.

Our party of 3 were supper happy to find that Happy Tours had space on their small group (limited…read moreto 8 people) Isle of Skye day trip from Inverness, as Rabbies tour for the only day we could do it was booked out. The tour started at 8:30 am and our meeting point was in front of the Columba Hotel and our tour guide Jim was wearing a kilt and was easy to understand. The itinerary for this tour was: * Loch Ness (with a view of the ruined Urquhart Castle - they Day we were on our tour, it was closed) * Glen Shiel (location where a Jacobite battle was fought against the British Government. On the drive, Jim pointed out a memorial to a Scotsman who lead away Govt Troops, but we didn't stop at the gravesite and I can't recall the name) * Five Sisters of Kintail (saw the peaks while driving out to the Isle of Skye) * Eilean Donan Castle (world famous and extremely photogenic) * Skye Bridge (fabulous piece of engineering connecting Skye with the mainland. Jim informed us that the particular link in the curve of the bridge was to enable the Britannica to be able to pass below to get to the Sea, bit of course while the bridge was being built, the Britannica was decommissioned!) * Cuillin Mountains * Portree * Old Man of Storr * Kilt Rock + Mealt Waterfalls * Quiraing Coming in early spring, we really lucked out and spotted pretty much all the wildlife (not including birds) which Skye is know for, including a gorgeous majestic herd of deer (shades of that Scottish TV show - Monarch of the Glen) at dusk, when driving back from Portree back to the Skye Bridge. Also in the morning, we spotted a heard of wild goats (including babies!) and wild horses with their untamed manes and after lunch we stopped by a closed pen by the roadside to check out the majestic Highland Cows in all their glory! The bus was super comfortable and it was an interesting group, with pretty much everyone on the tour being American. So why the 3-stars? Cause I feel Jim could have done a better job: 1) we discovered early on that the mike wasn't working. Sitting in the back seat, it was hard to hear him. He said he'd connect with another guide and get the mike fixed, but that didn't happen, so a lot of times he was telling folks information and we in the back seat couldn't hear it 2) it was clearly written not to eat or drink in the car, but Jim was doing both and then had a throwaway line about oops, he really shouldn't have done it. In the meantime, all of us obeyed the rules, even tho" a takeaway coffee wouldn't have gone amiss! 3) he was so busy chatting to the folks up front, he missed pointing out some of the sights. So we were driving by the Old Man of Storr Rock foundation and one of the other passengers pointed out (he'd been to Skye previously). 4) I feel more Jacobean history could have been told to us. Admittedly this is not the Culloden tour, but this area is rich in Jacobite history and Jim didn't do that great a job conveying the historical richness of the area we were driving thru. There were some pros- 1) unexpected snowfall / sleet meant we could go up the Quiraing and Jim did a great job showing us other sites around Skye, as we went further up along the coast and saw a most beautiful castle turned hostel. 2) very accommodating about comfort spots and stopping to see the wildlife I'm grateful got the chance to tour the Isle of Skye, however my first preference would have been a Rabbie's Tour.
