There are just not words to describe..how often I dream about this restaurant. When I wake up and…read moremy pillow case has a drool spot on it, I know that it is because I have been dreaming about the most succulent and soft gluten free bread I have ever tasted. I was super excited for our visit to Sweden, yah I was getting my new Volvo but I was even more excited about how different the culinary scene is to the masses of chain restaurants in the states. Every place we checked out online prior to our arrival was full of tasting menus and gourmet dining experiences. While this restaurant does not have many yelp reviews, I could find I stumbled upon it in a blog and the photos and reviews on google and tripadvisor had me enamored. This restaurant is set underground in one of Kalmar's oldest stone houses. The cellar of the 1660s home has been thoughtfully renovated to house this beautiful restaurant. Your experience is utterly transformed as you exit the cold Kalmar streets and dive underground into this candlelit stone cellar with little nooks and crannies set aside for more intimate dining. We were here on a quiet night and were 1 of only 2 tables. Our server was wonderful and helpful and kept bringing me out more of the gluten free bread I was falling madly in love with. Seriously I would wash dishes and take payment in bread if I lived in Kalmar. I was thrilled to find that many of the menu items were also gluten free including their soup of the night which was served with a drizzle of herb oil and a parmesan crisp on the side. I had the elk which was delicious and the husband also enjoyed his pork dish. Our desserts were artfully presented and delicious and my only regret is that I do not live next door to this place. While traveling through Sweden we ate at several michelin star restaurants and had our share of gourmet tasting menus but this..this was my favorite meal of the trip. Perhaps it s because she was the most miserable looking one there!!! The lunch time menu was simple enough three meat dishes one fish and a salad. As the weather was very good when I went here and was able to sit outside there were many heaters on display so I imagine they are on more often than they are off. They also provide blankets on the outside chairs so I guess if you are hardy enough in the colder months you can still eat and drink outside. The food portion size was ok and the quality was better than I expected. All in all I wold eat from here again.
