We chanced upon the Nook by pure luck and glad we did! We had taken the cable car up from Market and jumped off at Hyde and then walked down the four blocks to pick up another cable car to bring us to Lombard street (ok, we were being super touristy this day!). The next cable car was a few minute away and when it arrived it was packed, sensing a trend, we decided to check out the Nook. It was inviting, lookign in it was simple, well appointed, had a bunch of folks at laptops and a few tabs by the window for couples. We simply wanted a snack and a glass of wine and that worked! Nice wine choices and the tomato bisque - perfect! What made the visit most pleasant was the owner ( manager?) who took the tome to talk with us, and help us decide on our order. Came here for coffee/tea yesterday afternoon with my cousin. I found this place on yelp and it was conveniently located so we decided to try it out! I went with the chai latte and my cousin got the peppermint tea. Overall the shop was cute! I liked the simple vibe and cozy feel. My latte was ok..not the best and not the worst! The latte didn't really taste like chai at all but more so just hot milk! I still had a decent experience (mostly because of my company) and I would probably come back if I was in the area just based on location. I don't know what the hype is about with this place because we didn't get any of it. It was the worst breakfast I have ever experienced. I cook better than this when I was 9 years old. I thought she was going to say, "I'm just kidding, here is your real breakfast." I ordered the ham sandwich which was fine, with a few burnt edges. My wife's scrambled eggs with bacon and butter baguette looked like they just bussed it off a table and gave it to us. The baguette was just heated enough to be dry. The egg (yeah 1 egg) was cook, stabbed at with spatula a couple of times, then it was sent off to occupy a small section of a plate that resembled someone's uneaten portion. They also forgot the butter. My son's bagel with smoked salmon was swimming in a pool of lemon juice. They need to rename this plate Lemon Soggy Bagel. And someone in the back was messing around with a Japan Katana sword to slice this bagel in half. I brought the plate back to the pickup counter and said, "excuse me this bagel is swimming in a pool of water. She said, "that is lemon juice." I said, "oh", turned around, stared at the plate, and brought it back to our table. My wife couldn't stand it, she brought it back to have the plate switched out. Coffee was good. I was looking for a wine/coffee bar specifically when I came upon Nook. I had googled a nearby spot - there it was. I stopped in and it's in such a fun touristy spot. The cable car rides right past it. I arrived just in time for happy hour. I pulled out my laptop and started a tab. First I started with a Coca Cola because I needed some sugar to work. Then, I moved on to a glass of Malbec from Lodi which was delish. I started to get a little hungry and ordered the chicken, pesto, tomato & mozzarella pizza. It is so tasty and they added the perfect amount of mozzarella. I also had the lentil soup which is made from scratch onsite. It was delicious - buttery. It is definitely comforting. I also tried the hummus which is also made from scratch onsite. It is so delicious. The pita that cane with the hummus was warm and seasoned deliciously. The first thing I noticed was the woman, Rana, at the counter, she is so friendly. And it's a family run place. Her daughter and husband were here this eveni and they are are all so lovely and friendly. I will say they make you feel so comfortable. I love the way they make you feel like part of a neighborhood. I highly recommend it. There's also internet. I will say for those who bring their laptops to cafes, please make sure to patron properly. It's so easy to forget Nook as a spot for weekend mimosa brunching but it's quite a good option especially if you're looking for a more intimate spot. It's great for a sunny afternoon catch up with a good friend as we experienced one weekend recently post morning run. We sat outside to enjoy the sunshine and to people-watch as trolley after trolley of tourists kept going "clang clang" on by. A limited kitchen keeps the menu fairly straightforward - sandwiches, salads, small bites plus egg dishes on the weekend. I had the chicken pesto sandwich with artichokes and fontina cheese which was satisfying although I much preferred my friend's prosciutto sandwich with added avocado. Sandwiches come with side salads so it's not the most filling of meals if you're hungry as we were. Ended up ordering some smoked salmon crostini to split between us. Wash all this down with bottomless mimosas, you've got the ingredients for a lazy Saturday set. The prices are great, the space feels relaxed, and the folks that work here are really sweet plus they also assemble a pretty great looking smoked salmon bagel. Think that's what I'll get the next time I'm back at Nook for some weekend mimosa bunching. read more

I've lived around the corner from The Nook for 13+ years and been a regular all that time. It's definitely my favorite coffee shop in SF overall: solid in terms of food (mostly Mediterranean) & drink (coffees, sodas, beer, and wine), service (super-friendly staff), atmosphere (on Hyde St w/cable cars going by, sunny SW corner exposure with outdoor tables that get plenty of sun), and clientele (good mix friendly locals and happy tourists). Oh, and last but not least the internet is reliable and I rarely see laptop users have to share tables. The sandwiches and salads have a Mediterranean emphasis and all the ones I've tried are yummy and good-portioned. My favorites are the breakfast wrap and the Chicken sandwich with pesto, artichoke hearts, and mozzarella. They've got a great happy hour with good deals ($4.95 wines and beers as low as $3) and hours (4-7 pm), but I love the all-day happy hour on Tuesdays - makes it easier to indulge in that beer or glass of wine with your lunch! read more

I have a Sunday ritual of visiting a different coffee shop every weekend and enjoying an Americano and a good lunch. So I thought I'd start leaving reviews on these based on three criteria (5 being the best): Food, ambiance, and extras. You're probably wondering why I'm not grading on coffee? Well because I'm not an expert, but what I do know about is the above topics. Food: 4 They provided quite a vast selection of food options, from sandwiches, salads, baked goods, and small bits. All of which were made to order. I ended up having the chicken pesto sandwich that came with a salad. I do have to say it was satisfying, however, I feel like the chicken might have reheated, prepackaged meat and not sure if they made the pesto in house. The salad was just greens with a little bit of dressing. The soft ciabatta bread and cheese was what saved it for me. Again, overall satisfying, but which it was fresher ingredients. Ambiance: 4 This shop is super cute and if you're looking for a neighborhood vibe, this is it. The shop had huge windows that let in a lot of light, which I loved! So I was sure to sit by the window on the bench that spans across the wall. Though there were cushions on the benches.. they were worn out and flat so wasn't the most comfortable. The staff was really nice and helpful when ordering and delivered my food to my table. The cafe is made even more charming with the trolly that rides by from time to time. It was pretty quiet despite the trolly, which is was surprising. Overall, very cute and welcoming cafe. Extras: 5 So one of my pet peeves is when you go to a cafe and they have bad wifi, Nook had very strong wifi which was easy to connect. However, on the weekends, there's a 2-hour limit, which really wasn't an issue for me, since I only stayed that long. They also had a good amount of outlets to plug into against the wall which is nice to see. Parking wasn't too bad either, considering the location. I feel like anything past Van Ness, parking get's difficult, but I was able to find a spot just up the street. Luck? Maybe. Overall I really liked this shop and highly recommend checking it out. I go to a lot of cafes here in SF (I try at least one new one every week), and this has remained my favorite since I first visited. For me, there are three main elements that really make a cafe: the food/drink, the ambiance, and the service. The food/drink: I'm a coffee snob. I hate to be that kind of millennial, but I truly love coffee and have high expectations for it. I think they serve Equator blend (don't hold me to that) and it's always excellent. The black coffee is never over brewed or burned, and the espresso is rich. There's a wide selection of beers and wines served (4 pm happy hour? yes please). On the weekend they serve bottomless mimosas until 3 pm; you really can't beat that. I haven't tried much food from the menu, but there are loads of options. What few food items I have had, I've thoroughly enjoyed. The smoked salmon small plate is much more filling than you'd expect!! The ambiance: This is one of the few cafes where I can go to work for hours on end without disruption, but can also come here for a cute date. The decor is a classic cafe; I find it comforting and charming. When the cable car drives by I feel like a beatnik lesbian poet in a French cafe in 1959 (and yes, I 100% mean that in a good way). They switch up the music genres often enough that there's variety without feeling jumpy. It's quiet but not empty. It's busy but not distracting. The service: I really can't emphasize enough that the service here is absolutely fabulous. The staff is always friendly, and constantly on the move. They work quickly without sacrificing quality.
