I'm always leery of dual cuisine restaurants and should have passed, but it was cold and I didn't have much time. And this is the second time I went to a Salinas pho joint that gave me lemon instead of lime, which sounds minor but makes a big difference in taste. Family owned, great service. Extremely friendly with good to excellent food - depending on what you get. Visited Salinas with the partner in crime. Being from Salinas area, he likes this place and we decided to stop by for dinner. Around 6 it was pretty busy and kept getting busier. We got our order in fairly quick. The staff is amazingly nice and attentive. They truly do care for their customers and I love seeing mom/pop shops that showcase this. I ordered a Pho dish that was not on the menu, Pho Tai Chin - mostly Pho Tai but I added a different meat to it (thit chin + thit tai). My boyfriend got his favorite, Shrimp and Vegetable Pho Both had great flavors, lots of veggies. Things we liked: fried chicken wings that had a great sweet sauce, chow mein, the wonton soup was in two containers (one with the broth and the second with the noodles, wontons, jalapeno, bean sprouts, one slice of lemon, cilantro, green onions). Things we didn't like: duck was overcooked, ribs were overcooked, sauce for fresh rolls was horribly bland and unexciting, nothing special about the fresh rolls, not much for veges for the wonton soup. Was so happy to be able to dine-in again at the Noodle House in Salinas. First off, the longtime servers are still there, providing fast, friendly service. We got the fresh spring rolls(shrimp) and the Viet rolls for appetizers. The Viet rolls we're hot and very tasty. Spring rolls came with peanut sauce and were some of the best I've tasted. There is a long list of lunch specials. Hard to choose just one! I got the chicken with oyster sauce. Served hot with white rice and crispy won tons. First time there, lived in the area all my life, and it was delicious! The bbq rice was tasty with tender little bites of pork. The chowmein was flavorful and the noodles were perfect. When my family and I were moving we were craving Chinese food and so it just happened that we discovered Noodle House because it was across the street from our hotel and I thought we should give them a try. To my surprise Noodle House's food was alright but nothing really special and I thought it was gonna taste great. Decided to go here for a quick side dish for dinner since my hubby made rice at home. I ended up getting the mandarin crispy chicken, spicy at that. I got home opened up the steamy chicken and noticed less then 8 pieces of chicken. It looked good and smelled good so off I go eating it with rice. I was disappointed...the flavor was not even spicy, the chicken tasted old...I ate it anyways because I was hungry. I have gotten pho, fried rice and noodles there before and didn't understand why I had such a bad experience purchasing this chicken dish..this night.. This didn't seem like a promising place. Salinas, CA is not exactly a bustling place for Vietnamese food. Worse, the menu is almost entirely Chinese specialties with a list of different types of pho pretty much rounding out the Vietnamese side of the menu. I mean, these are countries that were recently at war with each other, so I wasn't exactly expecting much harmony in the menu. With all of that withstanding, the pho here is actually pretty good. And I don't mean to say that it's pretty good for Salinas or anything like that, no, in general, they have pretty good pho. Surprising, I know! The pho itself has a wonderful, anise-flavored broth that has a nice, deep flavor that really comes alive with the addition of Sriracha sauce. The noodles were plentiful and had nice texture. All of the add-ins were fresh and flavorful too. For the beef, I went with the tendon and the meatballs. The meatballs were typical in their sponginess and flavor. However, the tendon was downright excellent and was shockingly good. To do it again, I would only opt for the tendon and double up on it. Definitely recommend for the pho. read more

Lucyyyyy I'm home!!! I brought my Granny Goose here that happens to be called Lucy. I asked if she ever had Pho and she said no and wanted to try something different. We came during a weekday between lunch and dinner so the place was almost empty. Unfortunately after my Granny's stroke it is hard for her to move about. Still on search for a new noodle house brought us here today for lunch. We got here before the lunch rush and were the only ones here. They guys who run the place were very friendly and welcoming, that was nice. I had their Cashew Chicken lunch special. it came with some steamed rice and fried won ton skins. I asked for it spicy and that's how it came. It was good, just your basic veggies, bell pepper, onion, celery, carrots, bamboo shoots and a couple of mushrooms, with a handful of cashews. Would have been better if they had put some zucchini it it. Hubby had their Kung Pao Shrimp lunch special. It looked and tasted exactly like mine with the same veggies except it had shrimp. I was looking for more of a Vietnamese food place and this turned out to be more Chinese with the exception of their big Pho menu. I think next time we'll try the soup. read more

The only place where you can buy pho in salinas, so you are forced to eat here if you have the craving. It's not a bad place to go for the pho, but instead of rice noodles I get the egg noodle. This is family owned and operated so its very homie. A few of my favorite dishes would have to be the house special fried rice, comes with two types of muchroom, pork, egg, shrimp, and chicken with peas and corn. Since I dont like frozen vegetables, I request for no peas and carrots which makes this dish even better. The salt and pepper shrimp is good here too as well as the mandarin chicken. A dish that I also enjoy that I don't think many people know of is the pork or chicken over egg. This dish comes with a dipping sauce, rice, and lettuce with cucumbers. This is the perfect size for someone that is not too hungry. The only downfall to this restaurant would be the cleanliness. The decor seems out of date and should be refurnished. It gets pretty busy during lunch, but your food still comes out at a decent time. They do also offer lunch specials that come with soup =) for a good price. read more

A pretty good bowl of Pho! The broth tasted pretty good on its own. But if you're anything like me, I prefer my Pho a bit spicy. This spice is usually achieved with either chili paste or hot chili oil. The table didn't have any chili paste, and the chili oil was sorta sweet. This place is average. The food gives out more of a Chinese food vibe than Vietnamese. For the best Chinese food I'd suggest Mandarin House by Sherwood instead. Their pho is what brought me in yet I'm already used to the best (Noodle bar in Marina/Seaside), that it missed the mark for me. The chicken was good, yet there wasn't enough of it and the soup didn't have the intensity that I expected. The staff is friendly yet on my visit they were more focused on serving and being super kind to their existing-repeat customers so I didn't get to experience the amazing customer service others write about. This restaurant really needs to be upgraded though. The decorations don't add up. Its vital to add that the restaurant was packed with regulars which is a good sign (Maybe they've yet to experience the best and settle for 2nd). Their prices are also affordable, so that's another positive! Overall, this place can be a hit or miss. I'd rather go to the other two restaurants which were mentioned above. read more

The entrée was just ok, rice was the best part. It comes with some sort of egg soup which was bland. The part that bothered me the most was the cleanliness. Containers on the table looked old and dirty. The bill came on a dirty tray with an UNWRAPPED fortune cookie. But the thing that really grossed me out was the piece of metal I found in my curry dish. Wow, super cool family owned noodle shop that's been in business 18 years! They're doin' it right. Just go, don't be snooty and you'll receive a darn good meal at an affordable price. I've lived in Salinas, CA for a long time and while I don't necessarily eat pho very often, I do get cravings for it every once in a while. I have to be candid, this entire place is the epitome of mediocre. I could have given this place an additional star since its the only viable location to get traditional Vietnamese pho in Salinas but having experienced much better quality pho in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Southern California's Inland Empire, I have to conclude that Noodle House's pho is average at best. My last experience at Noodle House was almost doleful. The decor was a tad topsy-turvy, the environment was far from clean, the seating was cramped, the service was a bit indifferent and the pho was woefully flat in taste, presentation and most importantly, in size. My friend and I both ordered large combo bowls and it truly seemed as if all we got more in excess was broth. The amount of actual noodles within the bowl could have amounted to about two hearty mouthfuls while the meat was a mixture of acceptable in taste and dense in texture. As I said before, the pho itself was mediocre but the crux of my issue was the amount of food proportionate to the price. While pho is typically cheap, I felt like I should have gotten a lot more substance for the amount that I paid. Personally, I am not a fan of their menu in which they try to blanket standard mainstream Vietnamese cuisine AND that of standard Americanized Chinese cuisine. I understand the logic of it from a proprietor's point of view since much of Salinas' population is naturally ignorant of the more detailed nuances of Oriental cuisine. After all, to most people of this city, 'Asian food' is 'Asian food', and that is perfectly fine. For those who have a more intricate understanding of the differentiations and denominations of 'Asian food', you *may* find their general 'Asian' menu a bit sloppy. If I wanted exceptional Chinese American food in Salinas, I'd go to Eagle Restaurant. If I wanted exceptional Vietnamese American pho, I'd probably have to go to Marina. I definitely don't want to go somewhere that creates a mishmash of both worlds that consequently runs the risk of producing mediocre results on both spectrums... which unfortunately is what Noodle House seems to do. I suppose it also didn't help that right next to our cramped table was a large party of obnoxious children who felt that it was perfectly acceptable to grab chopsticks, crawl under the tables, use them as makeshift drumsticks and then proceed to put them back into their table containers for the next unlucky saps to pull out and use. I wouldn't have counted that against the restaurant if I hadn't actually seen one of the servers witness this and then promptly ignore it. read more

My friends and I seem to always go for pho after music festivals/a night out, so after Lightning in a Bottle festival, we of course had to make a pit stop to Noodle House. We were a bit skeptical at first (afterall, we were in Salinas), but we were absolutely pleased with our food! We were a huge group, around 10 people, and there were no leftovers in sight! Whenever I go to a restaurant, I channel my dad, the former Berkeley City Sanitarian, who inspected food service vendors. I drive by the back door and the dumpster, and then check out the front door. If they are clean, then I know that the management is concerned about cleanliness where their employees hands are touching, and is concerned about their appearance to the public. On the plus side, the folks cooking and serving are ever so sweet. Service was quick. The place was packed at lunch time on a Wednesday. I had the #15 - Pho w/Brisket & Meatballs. One BFF had #5 - Pho w/Round Steak. Another BFF had the Curry Chicken Lunch Special. The Pho was a good broth, but the noodles were clumped together. The meatballs were delightful. The brisket was tough. The round steak was great. The Curry Chicken was huge in portion but leftovers were left on the table.
